To buy from a MLM scheme?

A friend of my mum's has got herself into Scentsy. I know about MLM pyramid schemed so have always ignored requests to join these types of pages but I was drawn in by a nice smelling bath bomb my mum got.

Anyway, I've seen that she does a few products in my favourite type of smell. I like the look of it. AIBU to buy a few bits? Blush

Or is that not right since I don't agree with MLMs?

Personally I wouldn't The odd product or two might be nice if you like that sort of thing but you'll be bombarded (sorry for the pun) and they try to hook you in. I'd block and move and find something nice from an independent seller instead.

Gingernaut · 17/05/2020 15:12

It's not right.

You'll encourage her and probably get the hard sell about becoming a 'sales consultant'.

Please avoid.

SpoonyFace · 17/05/2020 15:19

Noooooo, it will be like when you click on an advert online and then it haunts every page you visit for months....but in real life!

Unless your favourite smell is very unusual, there must be an alternative.

Norma27 · 17/05/2020 15:23

I couldn't buy anything from any MLM. The business model is awful and exploitative. Buying from them assists this. They should be banned.

MouthBreathingRage · 17/05/2020 15:25

Don't do it. It just encourages the whole system, which is completely immoral. That money doesn't go to your mum, it goes to those who conned her into the whole thing.

TheGoogleMum · 17/05/2020 15:27

Interesting how the voting disagree with the comments so much! I voted yanbu. If you want what she's selling hen yes buy it she'll be glad you're supporting her. She might realise there isn't much money in it and just be doing it to keep herself occupied. If she asks you to do anything you aren't comfortable with be honest and say it isn't for you.

SatansWife669 · 17/05/2020 15:28

Is there a way to buy from scentsy without a “consultant”? If so just do that. Imo I see nothing wrong with buying through a consultant if you don’t give a shit about your friendship... buy a few bits and if she starts bombarding you then block her.

CleanIsBlissful · 17/05/2020 15:28

It isn't my mum doing it, that doesn't really change anything though x

Mind, you could throw your mum under the bus Grin
Give your mum a little list and the money for your mum to add your things to her next order (if she buys from them anyway) means you won’t get the bombarding? Blush bad idea? Grin

Thank you for all the replies!

I rang my mum and asked what's happened since, as in has she been bombarded with messages etc. She said no, nothing. She bought the bath bomb and that was that. She gets invited to the odd bingo live chat on FB for a raffle, but that's it

I clicked on one of her bingo's last night (didn't buy any numbers), and it was really lovely. I'm quite lonely at the moment and if was nice to chat/feel like I'm with adult women just having a natter Sad

I think I might buy just one thing that I've got my eye on...then ignore if I'm pressured or even messages repeatedly about more products. I've always avoided this sort of thing before but it seems really friendly and not 'boss babe'. No posts about what you can earn, recruitment, working 'your own business' etc etc

Just don't!

You might think you know your mum's friend and that she's "not like that". And she probably really isn't - that's why the brainwashing is even necessary.

They're cults, though! And they behave exactly like cults. Buying from an MLM for the product is a bit like joining a scientology event for the buffet: you might even get away - but do not, for a second, assume it'll be without them trying every trick in the book on you.

Laaalaaaa · 17/05/2020 15:44

If you like something - just buy it. You were always going to be told not to on here.

MouthBreathingRage · 17/05/2020 15:44

It isn't my mum doing it, that doesn't really change anything though

Ah sorry, misread. No, it doesn't really change what I said though. I hope your mums friend doesn't get to into it all.

MouthBreathingRage · 17/05/2020 15:46

If you like something - just buy it.

Even if it encourages the friend who will probably end up losing money out of the whole scheme? MLMs are dangerous, the only people who gain are those at the top, I don't think that's worth it just for a nice bath bomb.

EmbarrassedUser · 17/05/2020 17:01

I see no problem with buying it. I disagree strongly with MLMs but unfortunately they aren’t going anywhere 🤦‍♀️

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 17/05/2020 17:03

Scency is decent. My friend sells it. She holds weekly raffles and that’s it. Not in your face isn’t rude etc the most shes ever sold to me or asking if I want anything when she puts an order in.

RiverCrossing · 17/05/2020 17:16

I buy from my local Body Shop consultant - if I didn’t, I’d be buying from the store. She has never been pushy or tried to recruit me and I spend a lot of money with her. Couple of raffles a month with no pressure. MLMs are generally horrendous but there are some good people involved who won’t pressure you. Maybe this is one of them!

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 17/05/2020 19:29

Surely there's shitloads of unsold stock on ebay?

I used to buy Herbalife on there when I wanted the odd thing without the hard sell.

overthinking88 · 17/05/2020 19:39

I have brought fron Scentsy as I prefer the warmers to any form of candles. However as soon as i brought anything from the consultant (a friend!) I was bombarded with the 'you should join etc. A few short, sharp messages of how I didn't want to join soon shut that down and generally I get left alone now and occasionally asked if I want to order anything (usually around the end of the month)

If I listen to everything my friend says, she has paid for several holidays, brought laptops, Ipads etc for all her family through Scentsy, but I also know for a fact her husband is on a 6 figure salary and they have no mortgage as she inherited a house.

ChicCroissant · 17/05/2020 19:47

If you like the product, why not buy it? I don't see what is unreasonable about that.
