Neighbour’s dog waking me up at 6am!

Our neighbours have a yappy little dog that barks constantly for about 10-15 mins every time it goes out into the garden.

It doesn’t go out that often during the day so I tolerate it, as you have to in spirit of neighbourly relations. However, before lockdown they were letting it out every morning at 6am so every morning I got woken up. As I’m sure do many of the neighbours as lots of gardens back onto each other.

They haven’t been working during lockdown but last Saturday it happened at 5:30 in the morning, today 6! I’m getting really pissed off as they made no effort to call it inside today and it went on and off for about 30 mins.

I am fortunate enough to still be working, but it makes me even more annoyed when on the 2 days off I have, i get woken up at that time!

AIBU here to think at the weekends that shouldn’t be ok? They are very nice people but I can’t tolerate this if it happens again next weekend. Would I be unreasonable to get up and knock on their door if it happens again to ask them to bring it inside?

You have my sympathies OP. My NDNs have a sheep dog who barks incessantly, inside or out. It frequently barks late at night, I think they wind it up, and it’s really loud through my wall. It also barks early in the morning, about 5:30, when they let it in the garden.

I’ve asked them to be mindful of the neighbours but they never are. I think they are hard of hearing so maybe they can’t hear it? Either way it disturbs my sleep and wakes me up. I’m moving soon though so can’t be arsed to make a fuss.

We had the same thing with a house on our street. I eventually snapped and went over to hammer on the door one morning and tell them how unreasonable it was. Turns out they were letting the yap-rats out at 6 then going back to bed, leaving them to bark for what seemed like hours. They did stop after that.

I think people with those sorts of dogs just get used to the noise and don’t realise how awful it is. My dog barely ever barks so anytime it does, I’m quick to put a stop to it.

Just ask, with a sweet smile on your face - can’t hurt, and most people don’t want to be a nuisance neighbour.
