To wonder if people have forgotten that Mike Tyson is a rapist? (Trigger warning)

He is everywhere at the moment. Memes, Facebook, videos, the press.

Even my DH tries to tell me about something he's doing or something he has read. Look at how fast he hits! Isn't he a good boxer! I've made it clear I'm not interested in anything sex offenders are doing.

I've read about his crime and he's a misogynistic predator, no two ways about it.

Have people forgotten or do they just not care? Why aren't the media getting a bollocking for glorifying such a person?

He can self-publicise all he wants, we're still not letting him into the UK

I wonder how he was able to get into the UK in 2000 to fight in Manchester. Has he been put on this list since then?

RJnomore1 · 16/05/2020 09:56

He is a great boxer

He is also a rapist and a pretty horrible fucked up man.

I appreciate his skill at his sport as I love boxing while abhorring his acts as a man.

I think he may be short of money again as he does appear to be attempting some sort of comeback.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/05/2020 09:57

To be honest, no matter what Mike Tyson does he's always going to be a rapist, and nothing he does will change history or rehabilitate his reputation.

I'd rather he was an active economically productive convicted rapist than an economically inactive one.

We don't prevent criminals convicted of other offences from earning and paying taxes.

Freddiefox · 16/05/2020 10:02

I’ve not seen any comeback stuff. However I watch a documentary about him a while back and about how People didn’t understand how bad his early life was and how he’d had to learn to fight to survive.
I also think their is a section of people who believe she went to his room so what did she expect.
People want to believe that he isn’t at fault because he’s good at his ‘sport’ and being good at sport give you high status.

I think it tells you a lot about rape apologists and attitudes to women.

AlternativePerspective · 16/05/2020 10:10

This. The man is a vile specimen although I haven’t seen any of this comeback stuff. But A, he was of a different generation so people who are watching him now aren’t going to be familiar with his past, and B, do we ban someone from our screens purely because of where they’ve been,or do we in fact allow them to be seen, and to earn a living and let those who are interested in his former life find out for themselves and make their own judgements?

As a PP said,we don’t prevent criminals from earning a living.Should we?

KKSlider · 16/05/2020 10:17

We don't prevent criminals convicted of other offences from earning and paying taxes.

No, we don't, but we do bar people convicted of specific offences from working in certain roles and I don't think people convicted of offences such as rape should be allowed to work in positions of influence where others may see them as a role model or someone to aspire to.

KKSlider · 16/05/2020 10:21

To add to my previous post, they should also not be able to work in positions that could facilitate further crimes such as using that position of influence to commit rape again because - let's face it - being a famous sportsman brings with it a slew of hangers on, young women, hotel rooms, and sycophants willing to help cover it up.

Macrometa · 16/05/2020 10:38

I do think sex offenders should be economically productive in areas that don't allow to opportunity to re offend, but as a PP pointed out being a famous sports person brings with it plenty of opportunity to do so.

Given how the original offence happened the way it did, I think it's dangerous to bring him back into the public eye and allow him the opportunity to repeat it under similar circumstances.

His notoriety is going to benefit him beyond what he will give back to the economy, and I don't think he deserves a second of it.

I hadn't heard what he wrote in his autobiography about his spousal abuse being the best punch he has ever thrown, that further cements the fact he is a massive piece of shit.

Is the Me too movement still going? He would be a good candidate to be cancelled

OP posts:
Redcrayons · 16/05/2020 10:49

I haven’t forgotten.
When he was in The Hangover, I had to look it up as I thought I had misremembered him being convicted.
I haven’t seen his comeback anywhere, though, and won’t be looking for it. . Is he not too old now?

Macrometa · 16/05/2020 10:50

He's in his fifties, not sure where that leaves him in terms of coming back but he's training for it and getting an awful lot of publicity.

Evander Holyfield (?) The man who's ear he bit off, is talking about having a rematch.

It's lunacy

I had forgotten all about Mike Tyson but I haven’t seen him around or heard his name mentioned for years.

Macrometa · 16/05/2020 11:21

I'm surprised some haven't seen him in the media and on social media as hes everywhere this past week. The less people he reaches the better though.

I'm very surprised the MeToo movement haven't spoken up, they did a brilliant job of contributing to the cancellation of R Kelly and Harvey Weinstein.

I don't like cancel culture in general, unless it involves sex offenders and then I'm all for it Smile

That poor woman, and his ex wife's having to see the media blowing smoke up his arse again after what they know he's capable of. Just cruel.

OP posts:
BojoKilledMyMojo · 16/05/2020 11:35

I'm on social media and use it a fair bit. This is the first thing I've seen of Mike Tyson in a long time.

SkySmiler · 16/05/2020 18:38

Vile savage

mbosnz · 16/05/2020 19:05

A 'great' boxer doesn't bite his opponent's ear off. He's a thug.

thenightsky · 16/05/2020 20:20

Whenever I see his name, his crime is the first thing I think of Angry

dayswithaY · 16/05/2020 21:16

I haven't seen him "everywhere". Isn't the idea of prison that you serve your time then are rehabilitated into society. Seems like that is what he's doing. I wouldn't want to be alone with him but there's not much else he can do with his life and people under 30 probably have no idea of his rape conviction. Kobe Bryant was a rapist too but I didn't know about that until after his death. People still love Michael Jackson don't they?

LadyDoc1 · 16/05/2020 21:21

The article in the Guardian today was pathetic.
I do wonder if the widespread belief in rape myths is why men like this still continue to be public figures.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 16/05/2020 21:21

Same with Kobe Bryant and McGregor (although the latter has tragically only been held to account for being violent against other men so far)

mbosnz · 16/05/2020 21:23

I would hope that any decent person, and/or boxer, would not debase themselves by getting in a ring with him.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/05/2020 21:30

The pretty guy from Tattoo Fixers has a tattoo of Tyson on his arm.

He was also hero worshipped in an episode of HIMYM.

People have short memories.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/05/2020 21:31

I don’t forget what he did and his violence and attitude towards women

Do I believe people can change yes I do. Has he changed well I haven’t read or heard any recent reports so maybe he has

Tyson is the product of his utterly horrendous childhood, the only person how cared for him and saw his potential who encouraged him to use his anger in boxing died just as he was being noticed he was exploited and encouraged to act the way he did as it was amusing - it played into the wild black man character that opponents feared.

So no I don’t forget his crime and neither should others. Can I see beyond that yes

And as a boxer he is one of the greatest ever he was absolutely fearsome in his prime

KKSlider · 16/05/2020 21:49

Lots of people have horrendous childhoods and manage to not become wife-beating rapists.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/05/2020 21:53

I’m not suggesting that is an excuse

Is it a reason why so many men have anger and hatred towards society and often women in particular yes I do think that is often the case

Until that is addressed it doesn’t go away and for many it never changes

Clancey · 16/05/2020 22:02

No, I’ve not forgotten the rapist Mike Tyson. Hopefully he’ll go back in the ring & someone will give him a killer punch.
