To feel so ill with toothache

StormsDontLastForever · 14/05/2020 19:38

Posting here for attention, I have toothache and it's so so bad. Can't get seen until tomorrow, hardly slept last night, I am exhausted and the pain is so bad, tried salt water and hot/cold compress and painkillers. The pain is so bad it's making me be physically sick. Does anyone have any recommendations please? 😭

Check 111 website for emergency dentist and go there. Toothache rarely just gets better and can make you ill. In the meantime, co-codamol.

RusholmeRuffian · 14/05/2020 19:42

I have been there and you have my absolute sympathy. Clove oil helps if you can get it. Also neat whisky. You don't even have to drink it, just hold it in your mouth where it hurts and it numbs the pain enough to make it bearable. Spit it out of you don't fancy getting hammered, That worked for me in an emergency!

arethereanyleftatall · 14/05/2020 19:46

Ah, it's horrible isn't it.
I can't believe how little is being done with dentistry. Dh is a dentist, not working at the moment, not allowed; and he hasn't heard a single thing about when they'll go back or how they'll do it.

teenagetantrums · 14/05/2020 19:49

There a gel called something like oralgel that l got from supermarket when had toothache. Helped a bit. Second the whiskey and cloves if you have any. Toothache is the worst thing. More painful than childbirth if you ask me.

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 14/05/2020 19:53

Could you try some strepsils, they never work for my throat but always numb my mouth.

Toothache is the pits op Thanks

mogloveseggs · 14/05/2020 19:54

I'm struggling at the moment
Chemist recommended paramol and max strength ibruprofen. It's just about keeping it at bay

SierraHotel · 14/05/2020 19:59

Co codamol really helped me when I had horrendous toothache in January. I feel for you, there's nothing worse.

I was like this a month ago. I did a combination of Nurofen, mouthwash and whisky (swishing it round and spitting out) def brought some relief

Mangofandangoo · 14/05/2020 20:04

Those red nurofen capsules are the only thing that touch it for me

QuestionableMouse · 14/05/2020 20:07

@walksen

Really irresponsible to tell the op to overdose on painkillers. I actually can't believe I read that.

@StormsDontLastForever Please don't follow that advice. You'd end up in A&E with an overdose.

iolaus · 14/05/2020 20:14

I rang the dentist last week as had very similar toothache and they told me to try to continue with paracetamol and ibrufen. I was ringing them back 4-5 hours later int ears saying you'll have to take the tooth out because I can't cope (that was the only option due to covid) - they told me they couldn't do anything till 48 hours into the toothache but did prescribe me stronger painkillers (dihydrocodeine)- which worked to tide me over (they didn't see me, did a phone consultation then DH went and got the prescription for me) - as it was a tooth which already had a big filling in it I suspect the nerve is dying and while a root canal could have been done in normal circumstances they can't risk the drill with this virus.

coronarona · 14/05/2020 20:17

You need to get on top of the pain. Get to a chemist and get a codeine paracetamol or ibuprofen mix. Take that along with a plain para/ibu one after the other. So you're taking a painkiller ever 2/3hours. And clove oil. -and alcohol-

oneoffname · 14/05/2020 20:18

When I had an abscess on a root, my dentist suggested using soluble aspirin as to rinse around my mouth before swallowing it. Apparently the aspirin is absorbed into the skin. I also took co-codamol - alternating it with the aspirin.

AnathemaPulsifer · 14/05/2020 20:20

If you can tell which tooth it is try pulling the gums back slightly - I accidentally released the pus from an abscess that way and the pain reduced enormously.

Hunnybears · 14/05/2020 20:24

Poor you OP. I’m actually relieved for you that you’re going to actually get seen tomorrow. I was under the impression they weren’t seeing anyone at all regardless of how much pain they’re in

StormsDontLastForever · 14/05/2020 20:49

Thank you everyone for the advice. Still here and still in pain. Going to try get some sleep soon as have taken some strong painkillers can't get out to shop as it's only me and dd at home at the moment. Had a phone consultation first then someone else called me back for more info and said they would see me tomorrow morning although I may have to go up and wait (not bothered about waiting as long as they fix this) I would literally say this pain is worse than childbirth, sympathies to anyone else suffering at the moment 😢 thanks again for everyone's advice ❤️

Also, put a bag of frozen peas on your face. Heat sometimes makes the infection worse, as it can’t escape.

Cailleach · 14/05/2020 21:08

Just had a tooth out last week - it's an awful pain. If holding cold water against the roof of your mouth is the only thing that reduces the pain then it's probably an abscess. This was my third abscess and they've all been the same...Recommend clove oil as it numbs the nerve for around three hours.

Ricepud20 · 14/05/2020 21:45

Get yourself to a dental hospital or a and e tonight. If your tooth ache is that bad you could have an abscess and end up with sepsis If you wait. This almost happened to me...I was told to wait and it could have been lethal.

perhapstomorrow · 14/05/2020 21:55

You poor thing. I also think the pain of toothache is worse than childbirth. I woukd try and get hold of Orajel as mentioned earlier. Also, the pain is worse if you lie down so try propping yourself up with pillows.

Redcherries · 14/05/2020 22:01

Please don’t use heat, it feels marginally better at the time but my dentist said it makes matters worse,

Vodka held in your mouth over the area can numb it a bit / a lot but don’t over do it as it can irritate the gum.

I really feel for you, I hope you get some sleep and get help tomorrow to feel better.

MondeoFan · 14/05/2020 23:18

@caileach this is true I had this pain 3 years ago and the only relief was cold water. This time cold water really makes me wince so I have a feeling it's a nerve problem, it's so sensitive in one area
