Just that really... is anyone else noticing their bank account numbers rising!!? Due to being home on full pay and not spending on childcare, petrol, kids clubs, coffees etc etc all my pay is stacking up and I'm mind blown by how much I normally would be spending!! We are very lucky to not have many bills (no mortgage) we literally only pay insurances (life, house etc), electricity, Netflix and phones! I feel like I have been wasting A LOT of money beforehand! (I am aware that there are many not in this position etc and we are v lucky) but I also feel like I'm missing something and I owe someone/something a lot of money!!?? Anyone else??

Until earlier this week I would have said I was saving a fair bit. That was till I opened a package and discovered I’d accidentally ordered 4 identical jumpers instead of just 1. I’m going to smile nicely and plead for the store to take back the extras when they reopen ( they don’t usually do returns). At least they weren’t expensive if the shop refuses!

Hassled · 14/05/2020 21:25

We're spending so much more on food - DH, me and 2 adult kids, all making complicated lunches and using meals as entertainment. The days when a jacket potato would do for the evening meal seem to be over.

Crimsonnightlotus · 14/05/2020 21:25

I think it's a very nasty post. There are people struggling, not everyone is at home with full pay. This thread is just to make others who are struggling feel worse. What a nasty post. At the time like this, you should be ashamed, OP.

Valenciaoranges · 14/05/2020 21:25

Saving at least £1000 a month!! No fuel, cut right back on everything. Not wearing makeup as I’m working from home, using all my food before a I buy anything, not paying for hair, coffees, lunches, cakes and all the random crap I normally spend on. I needed to cut back because I have quite a lot of debt so have paid £3000 off in two months! It just shows how much I wasted before. The downside is my lovely daughter is with her father for the duration, but she’s happy, so that’s what matters and she is Uni age.

flumposie · 14/05/2020 21:28

Spending the same. Food shopping is more expensive and have bought toys and plants online. Also had to buy my own birthday presents online with people like my mum saying they would give me the money when they saw me next Grin

AudTheDeepMinded · 14/05/2020 21:28

@1forsorrow There's been a few similar boxes encountered on my walks but either I'm a raging literary snob or the standard of literary preference round here isn't great (think vampires in love and sado-masochistic relationships etc). I left a box of mine outside our house and they were all swiped, I should have left a note asking for swaps!

dibble15 · 14/05/2020 21:32

@crimsonnightlotus I think that's a bit harsh.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 14/05/2020 21:32

We are spending more than usual. Supermarket shop has gone way up - I have been ill and not up to cooking and husband is working very long hours, so we have been buying more quick to prepare stuff. Also we are eating more due to stress.

The electricity bill has also gone way up, from being at home all the time and my husband is working with multiple screens on all day.

We have a fairly tight budget so don’t usually spend much on going out, takeaways, buying coffees etc. so aren’t making any savings there.

Fortunately our income is stable, so I know that makes us more secure than many.

Chestnutacorns123 · 14/05/2020 21:37

@cantata you seem to have it tough, sorry to read about your worries.

@Drivingdownthe101, yes, my first was like that, it's tough going. Now 15 and can't get her up😂

I'm jealous as so many of you are managing to make great savings. My outgoings are similar as I'm still working. I have 3 children but enjoy the home schooling. I know its not easy for everyone but I'm working, not saving and we will soon all be taxed to the hilt!

Lovemusic33 · 14/05/2020 21:37

Yes, I’m saving money, mainly on fuel as I usually drive a lot. Spending a tiny bit more on food, no extra in electric or gas as we spend a lot of time in the garden (weathers been warmer). Not having take aways or going on random shopping trips. I am buying a few things online but not as much as normal.

clippityclop · 14/05/2020 21:40

Petrol almost nothing, no kids classes and clubs to pay for, no holiday, only doing supermarket once a fortnight with one weekly bread, fruit, veg and dairy top up. Savings for the kids uni fund are growing
We're very lucky for now but don't take it for granted.

Crimsonnightlotus · 14/05/2020 21:46

dibble15, am I? I just read it as very unpleasant. Not spending money on childcare or children's clubs while at home on full pay, good for her, but for the ones providing her children's care in normal circumstances, we don't know if they are happy about it.
It's an insensitive post. But that's my opinion. Sorry if I have offended you.

IndecentFeminist · 14/05/2020 21:47

We are spending a fucking shitload on food.

junebug21 · 14/05/2020 21:51

@Crimsonnightlotus my childcare was minimal and I only paid on attendance anyway...not contract as such. Also the clubs themselves have stopped looking for payments so not my doing at all. I also did state that I was well aware others are not so fortunate.

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 14/05/2020 21:52

About the same, maybe a bit more on food. Haven't even looked at meter readings. Both expected to work full time at home whilst home schooling.
No commute to pay for but am shopping for my parents, delivering parcels for the food bank to people who are shielding.
Still time poor.

houselikeashed · 14/05/2020 21:54

I agree, I wish I hadn't clicked on this thread.
We've lost our income and can get no help other than a 3 month mortgage holiday.
Very jealous of the people saving money, and getting an income, even if it is only 80% of normal.

I actually feel very bitter about it all, but I realise that at least we are safe (ish) and well.

Crimsonnightlotus · 14/05/2020 21:56

If you are aware that others aren't so fortunate, you wouldn't have posted this thread, or phrased it differently. Just acknowledging the fact doesn't make you a sensitive poster.
Like I said, it's only my opinion, and I found it very unpleasant. That's all. You don't need to explain anything to me at all.

Sevencats · 14/05/2020 21:56

We are both still working. Because of the virus we have managed to save a few thousand pounds over the last month. Has made me realise how much money I spend on crap

HollowTalk · 14/05/2020 21:58

@Cantata Were you self-employed?

Cantata · 14/05/2020 22:01

Thank you, @Chestnutacorns123

OP, I know you said you were aware that others are not so fortunate - but if you really, honestly felt this, you couldn't have started this thread. You could have just kept it in your head. You really didn't need to start something that makes people who are desperate feel even worse.

I think I last flounced from MN in about 2008, but might have to flounce again now. I spend some time every day working out the economics of me staying alive vs taking my own life (the latter would be better in economic terms), as compared to the emotional and mental effect on my teenagers/young adults (the former would undoubtedly be better for them).

I don't much care about myself (if I were just thinking about myself, there would be no thinking to be done - I now have nothing, other than my children), but I do care about the effect of my death on said children.

That's the reality of lockdown for some people.

Cantata · 14/05/2020 22:03

@HollowTalk Thank you for your kindness. Difficult to explain, but given that you have been kind enough to ask, I owe you the kindness in return to say that I fall between all possible stools!

HollowTalk · 14/05/2020 22:05

What a nightmare situation. I'm so sorry.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 14/05/2020 22:06

Not spending anything no but lost 35% of my salary (business owner who chose to pay her furloughed staff the 20% instead) so I'm just standing still really

BrutusMcDogface · 14/05/2020 22:06

@Cantata ❤️

Crimsonnightlotus · 14/05/2020 22:07

Cantana, I am so sorry you are feeling like this. I am sending my thought for you. Please take care.
