Just that really... is anyone else noticing their bank account numbers rising!!? Due to being home on full pay and not spending on childcare, petrol, kids clubs, coffees etc etc all my pay is stacking up and I'm mind blown by how much I normally would be spending!! We are very lucky to not have many bills (no mortgage) we literally only pay insurances (life, house etc), electricity, Netflix and phones! I feel like I have been wasting A LOT of money beforehand! (I am aware that there are many not in this position etc and we are v lucky) but I also feel like I'm missing something and I owe someone/something a lot of money!!?? Anyone else??

@Ginfordinner to be honest I don't really buy that many coffees...maybe 2 a week on average.

I am still spending a fair bit as we have Eid and ds's birthday around the corner bit have still saved a fair bit which is being put away for house improvements as it doesn't look like we will be moving house in the near future.

We would normally eat lunch out on a Saturday after I finish work buy dh is bringing me sandwiches to munch on the way home. Also I have been taking home made lunches to work rather than nipping out to get it.

We are spending a lot on the food shop though compared to normal.

Kraejka · 14/05/2020 20:17

Got barely any money coming in so I'm buying absolutely nothing apart from food.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 14/05/2020 20:18

We're not spending at all because we've lost 80% of our income.

We've only bought food and a very small amount of petrol since before lockdown began. We had one treat of a heavily discounted takeaway from Dominos that cost about £20. We are a family of 3 adults and a 16 year old.

Oh, and one item costing £17 from Amazon that my mother kindly paid for.

I'm usually very tolerant about people posting happy stuff about their lives, and like to see it, but at the moment I'd like to lamp everyone who is saying they are better off under lockdown or enjoying life more. That may be true but it's horribly insensitive to the vast majority who are finding it hard for multiple reasons.

VioletCharlotte · 14/05/2020 20:23

I have more cash in my account than usual, but I'm still managing to burn my way though a fair bit! I'm spending more on food than usual, but also buying lots online. I like to think of it as doing my bit for the economy Smile

VioletCharlotte · 14/05/2020 20:24

Chichchic apologies, I posted before reading your post. I didn't mean to rub salt in the wound. I realise it's really tough for a lot of people at the moment. I'm very fortunate to be working and on full pay.

dibble15 · 14/05/2020 20:25

Dare I say it, this is how us baby boomers saved up for a house, no holidays, no eating out , no beauty treatments no buying endless useless crap.

🤦🏼‍♀️

HazelBite · 14/05/2020 20:26

Ds and Ddil live with me and DH, Ds was working for a company that went bust 10 days before lockdown. Ddil is American and had just got her security clearance to work as a teacher here and had done a few odd days as a supply teacher.
DH is a self employed builder, no-one except me has an income at the moment (pension) we are struggling a bit, and living off my pension fund, until Ds's UC comes through and DH gets something from HMRC

Devlesko · 14/05/2020 20:26

We are saving on food bills as hard to get delivery and nobody wants to go out. I'd prepped as well, so less to buy. No childcare and no working costs anyway.
Not really buying much else, maybe the odd book.
Only have ancestry subscription, no netflix, sky etc.
We rarely had takeaways anyway, so cook the same.
Not much has changed for us, apart from furlough before losing my job and business.

Proudboomer · 14/05/2020 20:28

I am not spending on anything other than bills and food as I am carer for a shielding person who lives with me. And so even though my part time retail job is still there I have taken unpaid careers leave so that I don’t risk bring the virus home. I am lucky I have savings to tide me over but as I am not earning and careers allowance of £67.25 doesn’t go far I am not paying out for anything apart from necessary bills.

Reading about other people’s growing savings makes me feel a bit shit as I qualify for nothing, my savings won’t last forever and then when this is over I fully expect tax and the cost of living to go up to pay for everyone else’s 80% furlonged payments.

GreyGardens88 · 14/05/2020 20:29

Yes my only expenditure is my mobile, rent, netflix, contact lenses and £30 per week on food and alcohol. The biggest savings for me are from no travel costs and not popping into Tesco or Greggs for meal deals every lunchtime, as I cba queuing!

Greenpop21 · 14/05/2020 20:30

Yep, saving lots. Tried internet shopping but so much out of stock of very long delivery time so haven’t done much at all. Spending more on food but that’s it.Every cloud!

Cremebrule · 14/05/2020 20:33

We’re spending a fortune on food but overall much less. This month has been good as no nursery, commuting costs etc. However, if nursery opens, we’ll have a massive bill and by then my husband will be on quite a big pay cut so things will start getting tight.

Devlesko · 14/05/2020 20:34

Chic

My heart goes out to you, it really does. Thanks
I'm really worried too, but tbh I'm glad people are posting about realising how much work actually costs them.
I'm not saying everyone should up and leave their jobs, but some might see that they can and they have choices.
I'm going to lose my business and life's work, it's not just a job for me, It's more than financial.
I hope you muddle through Chic

Equimum · 14/05/2020 20:34

We’re not in quite such a lucky position, and have a mortgage and other bills, but we’ve not been paying nursery, swimming etc, no fuel, no season ticket etc etc and just not going out. Although we have spent our for some DIY projects, we are certainly saving a lot more than normal.

buckeejit · 14/05/2020 20:35

I'm SE but not long enough for any help sadly so very little spending money here. Thankfully dh is wfh so saving £170pcm on train fees. We'll struggle but will cope, for another few months anyway.

Absolutely will be the most vulnerable hardest hit. Those furloughed who have decent income & saving lots of money doesn't seem fair when some people who need a bit of help are getting nothing & will still end up with the pain we all have to endure paying all this back!

Aposterhasnoname · 14/05/2020 20:37

Me. Usual bills, and food and alcohol bill has shot up, but despite that we’re saving double what we normally do. I’m amazed and apart from haircuts/waxing I have literally no idea what the rest went on.

Goggle1968 · 14/05/2020 20:37

I keep getting pulled into online sales. I need to stop looking

nanbread · 14/05/2020 20:39

This thread and how much I'm saving (or not) makes me realise we were pretty frugal anyway. Rarely bought new clothes, didn't fritter money on stuff we don't need, didn't eat out much, don't do expensive hobbies etc.

And what we are saving on the odd takeaway coffee or meal out we are easily spending on the food shopping - last shop we did was about £430!!

We are still saving money on childcare and petrol though. I think we worked out about £400 a month.

TheClitterati · 14/05/2020 20:42

I've saved a bit and cleared my credit card debt. It's good to be able to put a bit aside for the uncertain future

BrutusMcDogface · 14/05/2020 20:43

I wish!! We’re spending a fortune on food and crap/art supplies/home school shit from amazon.

BrutusMcDogface · 14/05/2020 20:47

Chic - I did think this thread would be very insensitive to some people. There must be so many people for whom this will lead to financial ruin. We’re not sure yet what’s happening with DP’s job (he’s the sole earner). Flowers

cologne4711 · 14/05/2020 20:49

Same here despite earning less. Spending more on food but otherwise saving on train fares, petrol, Sky sports, swimming lessons.

Thinkingabout1t · 14/05/2020 20:52

We’re terrified all the independent restaurants and quirky little shops will go out of business. We’re saving lots of money under lockdown. So we’re trying to spend it on takeaways from places where we used to eat out, and gifts for relatives, and gift cards from shops we hope will reopen later.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/05/2020 20:53

Not here. I bought £150 on a bunch of books for homeschooling, paid 1.5k for a ct scan days before lockdown so I could know how extensive the hopefully last surgery I need will be. Also bought clothes for me, some home furnishings to single handedly prop up Laura Ashley, some large elastic belts to stop my stomach from falling apart further and some things for dd to play in the garden including an expensive piece of kit for a few hundred. Dh has been furloughed so money has gone down even though his company is topping up to 80%. Oh and I forgot plants for the garden. Dh put them in under my supervision. Seems I am not green fingered. Never was £100 so badly spent. Grin
