To feel sad & horrified by these comments from a former cleaner

The lady in the tweets is a former cleaner who has spoken about the issues she had during her time as a cleaner. She's spoken of horrific things like clients leaving, sick, skid marks and crusted over appliances for her to clean. Others have also spoken about being 'tested' with money left out and casually followed about the house.

Judging by the amount of people who have cleaners on this board, she's probably one of you. Would anyone admit to it though?

@mathanxiety... bone idleness is exactly what is was. I can't imagine wanting to spend an entire week staring at my own used dental floss... the bin was directly underneath where he used to leave it- it was actually more effort for him to drape and arrange it than just Chuck it in the bin

It was gross, sorry but something that has been used to remove food and plaque from someone's teeth- not appealing 🤢not as bad as vomit or shit... but actually there was plenty of shit in each toilet too

Some people just have no shame! Ps I now have a cleaner, I don't clean before she comes. I do tidy and I do make sure the toilet is presentable... as everyone who is able should!

Re these grills - is it like a toastie maker?

If so, you just put a wet dishcloth in it and heat it up for a minute or so, it all comes off dead easily. I would guess a professional cleaner would know that.

Er, it might go on fire if you leave it, don't come running to me, etc.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2020 08:45

Yes, more or less like a toastie maker except you can grill rashers, burgers, fish, mushrooms, sausages, etc on them. The fat drips off into a pan so whatever you grill doesn't swim in its own fat.

If you leave it for a week the wet dishcloth /steam trick will have to be supplemented by a good deal of scrubbing, rinsing out the dishcloth, scrubbing again, rinsing again. It can be really difficult to clean if the cook burned whatever it was that they were grilling and if you leave that for a week you will have a lot of work in store.

If you do it immediately you won't have as much scrubbing and the teflon surface won't wear out as quickly.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 17/05/2020 12:59

I see, ta. Makes sense to clean it immediately, then.

DodoandDinosaur · 17/05/2020 13:06

I've been on both sides too.

I used to be a cleaner in a hotel and caravan park. Absolutely awful job and one day had to clean up post-curry-poo from a carpet. It was vile.

We have a cleaner now (well not now, as I am shielded). I tend to organise before she arrives and then she does the cleaning, dusting and hoovering.

Whatisthisfuckery · 17/05/2020 13:25

My previous cleaners used to tell me some right stories about the houses they visited. Not names or addresses, just the disgusting messes they were expected to clean. Personally my dignity wouldn’t allow me to expect other people to clean up my blood and shit, but obviously some folk have no issue with it.

They also had clients who would clean the place thoroughly before they arrived, so you see all sorts as a cleaner I guess.

nokidshere · 17/05/2020 13:51

@AmelieTaylor I totally agree.

Our cleaner comes on Friday so each Thursday we tidy the house so that she can clean it. What's the point of someone cleaning if you can't see it's been done because of the clutter?

Also it means that we never have more than a few days worth of 'stuff' hanging about.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 17/05/2020 16:01

I can't imagine wanting to spend an entire week staring at my own used dental floss...

Was their telly broken?

AmelieTaylor · 17/05/2020 18:37

@nokidshere. that was weird. I got a notification to say I'd been mentioned on a thread...I thought I was going a bit mad as I couldn't recall reading the thread, let alone replying to it!! Kind of relieved it was a mistake (easily made) rather than me completely losing my memory! 🤣

@AmeliaTaylor - Hello, this might cause some confusion 🤣🤣

If you think its wrong for a woman to hire a household cleaner so that she can spend time doing something else that she deems more valuable, but you think it's OK for university academics to buyout their teaching so that they can do something else that they deem more valuable (usually research), then you are a hypocrite.

WellTidy · 24/05/2020 22:50

Our cleaner came back to work a few days ago. I’d been cleaning whilst she wasn’t coming, but not as well as she does every week. I spent a good half a day tidying up and putting away the day before she came so that she could clean the place properly. She made the house spotless and worked her socks off. So grateful for her help.

I’ve been a chambermaid in a hotel before. Some people are absolutely disgusting, leaving ‘deposits’ on the floor of bathrooms and in beds. It wouldn’t be something that I’d tweet about whether now or at the time (posting references here doesn’t count as it is anonymous!).

Laiste · 24/05/2020 23:06

I've been a cleaner. I would never have a cleaner.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/05/2020 15:23

@Laiste - do you find it as easy to clean your own home as it is to clean other people’s houses? In my experience, the professional cleaners who come here seem to get much more done than I would in the same time, and I’m not sure if that is because they are simply more experienced, more efficient cleaners than I am, or whether it is because I get sidetracked into tidying up and sorting out, whereas they just whizz through the cleaning - or a combination of both.

Whichever it is, I am definitely missing my lovely cleaners - ds3 (home from uni just before lockdown) is running round with the Hoover once a week, but having three people in the house rather than just me is making for more mess - dh was working in London a lot, and ds3 was living in Edinburgh, and was rarely home, so for at least half of most weeks, Ait was just me here, so there was definitely less mess!
