Cloth nappy obsessives - what do they do when their kids toilet train?

Moomin8 · 14/05/2020 12:28

I use cloth for my 5 month old baby. I love the pretty prints as much as the next person, I will admit but my main concern is finding something that suits my baby. If I can't get the print I wanted I just find something else.

However, at the beginning of lockdown I was invited to join a particular cloth nappy group on FB where there are people crying because they can't get a specific blueberry print nappy. Also, there are people selling nappies with slack elastics for £30+ because they are a limited edition print.

I think people get really whipped up with it all. There is no way I'd buy a nappy that someone else's kids have been pooping in for years for double the price that it was, new.

I guess it's like a hobby for some people.

What are they going to do when their kids potty train?

They are batshit!

I use cloth but can’t stand those groups-selling nappies because they bought one where the print placement is better? WTF?!!

I buy the ones that suit my baby best and suit our needs. I do need a few more for when we start nursery but I keep my stash to a minimum as we are “One and Done“ so my nappies won’t get reused by me (will be sold on but aren’t fashionable so won’t recoup much, which is fine).

RonObvious · 15/05/2020 13:26

They move on to collecting ethical organic clothes. Scandi, Maxomorra, Duns, Frugi etc. Lots of highly sought after prints that go for loads on eBay.

Exactly what I was going to say. Some of those FB groups are nuts: selling second hand t-shirts, complete with stains/holes for £10+. Nice people in the groups, but they really do over-value the clothes.

nevermorelenore · 15/05/2020 13:46

I've found this attitude on certain pram facebook groups too. I joined when I was trying to sell my old travel system and people are batshit! There are women who own 3 or more prams, a scrabble for certain models, lots of drama around the buying and selling of them. There were women who were completely broke buying 1k prams on credit because they had to have a certain one.

Good to have a hobby I suppose!

onedream · 15/05/2020 13:48

We use cloth nappies and wipes with my second lo, first one was in disposables..
I have few cheapie pockets, rest is Little Lovebum (I bought before the madness started) and Simplexes just because the fit and containment is great..
I tried unos as I saw everyone going mad, but didn't get along with them so sold them on for near rrp or rrp if new..
Once we potty train all nappies will be sold on, I look after them so they can be used after me and I can get some money back..

The only one I seem to be attached to is the balloon motherease uno which my lo worn on our diy lockdown cake smash few weeks ago on his first birthday, this is the only time he wore it as unos don't work for us in general. I will either keep it or if I come across someone who wants it badly because of the meaning behind it I might give it away, for free.

These nappies are lovely I did enjoy buying them, I enjoy using them but I will have no problem selling them after without ripping anyone off.
I do see some ppl as obsessive, but it's their money and their choice.

This thread was done a few months ago. They either have another child or move onto the next thing to obsess over- maybe homeschooling or making sure their DC are the best at everything in the class, at swimming or dancing etc too. That was the general consensus of that thread anyway.

I’ve always used reusables and my eldest is ten, it’s nothing new to me and it’s something I do to save money mainly. I definitely wouldn’t spend £30+ on a nappy, £20 is pushing it for me tbh. Never understood the Motherease hype, they don’t even have nice prints but all the Mum’s lose their nut over them and they sell out in minutes.

Moomin8 · 15/05/2020 13:57

Oh yes, the people who buy about 3 of a certain nappy because they want a particular print placement 😂

I've also seen people trying to force their 3 year old sons to wear girly, flowery prints and they don't want to. Poor kids 😂

I have never really considered the patterns on my nappies 🤦🏻‍♀️ That’s because they’re ALL second hand from my sister (well niece wore them) all have been washed on 90 and then used for my child 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m sure she’ll want them back afterwards too.

Moomin8 · 15/05/2020 14:31

@Maybelatte I agree - the Motherease prints are not that nice at all. I like the nappy itself though in terms of efficiency. But it's quite old fashioned looking with the binding etc.

I like apple cheeks no idea of they are fashionable of not 😂😂 x

whiplashy · 16/05/2020 04:04

also can’t get my head around this

Moomin8 · 16/05/2020 06:39

Apple cheeks are good nappies. They don't seem to cause websites to crash though!

Motherease unos are still popular but there are an increasingly number of people who seem to prefer Blueberry now and will swap their nice, new one for someone else's old one that's probably been hanging around for 4 years being shat in just because they like the print.

Also a lot of people are unhappy with a certain well known nappy retailer, who apparently doesn't always provide good customer service and favour certain customers. But also has now put a disclaimer about ME binding issues. No idea if this is true, I've not had problems.

I’ve just thought of a wonderful business opportunity - cloth nappies with a printed picture of Trump or Boris Johnson

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 16/05/2020 08:20

They move on to scandi clothes and Grimm's wooden toys, which I like myself but some of them go nuts for them.

The motherease thing was totally baffling. I got three wraps for a tenner, when I sold them on ebay I was offered £50 right away, I messaged the seller because I thought she'd made a mistake but no.

Lucy and Yak are another thing people obsess over

suriv · 16/05/2020 08:29

I'm just selling off my cloth nappies as my second is potty training. Within seconds women were begging for certain prints, offering more than I'd asked etc. I bought them new, bought a variety to try when they were on offer then bought whatever suited best. I wasn't bothered by patterns or prints just low cost and functional.

I didn't understand the trend of just putting babies in nappies, socks and tops to show off the nappy either.

suriv · 16/05/2020 08:30

No one is buying the mega cheap prefolds though and I found these the most absorbing and lasted the longest!

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 16/05/2020 08:36

Blew my mind too. I was given all my nappies by friends but needed the mext sizw up wrap and the poppers motherease were best for us as velcro caused skin reaction.

I couldn't believe the prices and speed second hand ones were going for and the way the group turned on someone who was frustrated by the whole thing, calling her bitter and their right to spend their money as they liked. Not the practical eco thing i was imagining.

Tried another brand, he leaked, gave up. Got about six months out of the stash and donated on the small little lambs as they only got used for a couple of months.

FairfaxAikman · 16/05/2020 09:17

I'm a recent convert after pre-lockdown panic buying caused a shortage here.

I reckon my 25 or so cloth nappies cost me about £80 (didn't buy all at once) and while I love the patterns I can't understand why anyone would buy hundreds and hundreds of the things.

Mucklowe · 16/05/2020 09:47

Men are out ruling the world; women are busy haggling over rare cloth nappy prints on Facebook groups. Fucking depressing.

Flythedragons · 16/05/2020 09:53

I used cloth nappies ten years ago now, I passed them on, but kept the inserts, they are the best cloths I have.

Moomin8 · 16/05/2020 10:19

Not just women @Mucklowe honestly there is a guy on one of the groups worse than any of the women.

😂😂😂

On fb I saw some idiot parent had inflicted a birthday cake on their beloved child with an image of Bojo on. Child abuse imo 😂

These people move on to Tupperware and products like that to become obsessive about.

BlueEggsAndSpam · 17/05/2020 07:57

@Moomin - Shame, I have neither Orion or any ombré. It’s good to know that I don’t have the cool ones though, I’ll be sure to keep my baby’s nappy covered at all times in future in case the other babies make fun of her avocado pants. Bitches truly do be crazy.

Moomin8 · 17/05/2020 10:09

@BlueEggsAndSpam at the moment any Blueberry nappy holds its value. Avocado is hard to find atm so you'd probably get a v good return on that for auction. Also watermelon, hedgehogs, space, rainbow, fairy tale prints, and quite a few others. People are mad. They want something just because everyone else does.

I used cloth for all 3 of mine. I had a few 'nice nappies' but the majority were workhorse nappies like Little Lambs. I refused them for all 3 then sold them on.

There has always been 'sought after' nappies, back when we started it was custom 'WeeNotions' and Blueberries. Then there was the 'custom' homemade wool wraps and trousers...
