Is this unusual?

This isn’t a boasting post, although I’m sure it comes across as one on here.
My almost 19 month old can count objects 1-10. Today he did it on our walk, he counted 10 sheep poos! And when we got home he counted 10 objects from his tea set and then 10 books later on. This has all come on suddenly, but he can’t speak very well. Although he understands mostly all instructions I give him e.g. “can you please go and get your shoes” and most words.

My boy started this around the same time, I didn't think was normal then I saw some on my NCT group had done it too so I guess not that unusual but still 👍🏾

If yes, then he is understanding the context and not the words. At most he is understanding only one word 'shoes'.

I disagree with this. Children understand a huge amount more than they can physically communicate when they're learning to speak.

The counting sounds great OP, it's so exciting when they learn a new skill.

It's never occurred to me to count how many words my 15 month has 😂 do you write them all down, 200 sounds an awful lot!

My late MIL made me write a list of words that Ds1 spoke when he was 18 months old. He had over 500! She was a teacher and really into child development. It honestly would never have occurred to me to do it if she hadn't insisted.
