To wonder why women tend to outlive men statistically

...if women have more areas within the body to develop cancer?

I’m ignorant, not a biologist, so I’m confused. I appreciate that there are risky behaviours, suicide, etc, but if we are talking about old age and the potential for cancer, wouldn't females have More risk - ovary, womb, cervix, breast, etc?

This is something I’ve always wondered about yet never figured out.

Nothing genetically relates to gender as it’s a word to describe societal presentation. Biological sex and chromosomes define Male/female disease. Gender would be the men behaving in risky ways to impress and prove their masculinity to other men type of risk. But natural life expectancy without societal risk factors would be sex based (psychologist albeit newly a psychologist)

Life expectancy is based on expectancy from birth.

Risk taking among boys and young men accounts for some of the lower life expectancy for men. Add to that the likelihood of being involved in combat in the armed forces and training accidents, and average male life expectancy drops compared to women's.

I’ve glossed over that explanation because I’m tired but you get the idea...

Waves @mathanxiety yes!

Men get breast cancer, just for the record)

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 13/05/2020 01:09

It is actually quite simple, we women need statistically more time to clean up after the man has gone.

Musicforsmorks · 13/05/2020 01:13

Ok I’m dying now ....that picture! 😁

Been reading about telomeres, interesting thst one study determined women in relationships had longer ones (good) but women in abusive relationships had shorter ones.

I wonder how common male breast cancer is. It isn’t something I’m familiar with.

Yes, I’m with you in terms of gender and actual biological sex.
Behaviours are interesting.

In 2017 around 390 men in the UK were diagnosed with breast cancer and there were around 80 male deaths from it.

Prostate cancer covers around a quarter of all male cancer diagnoses

changeagainandagain · 13/05/2020 01:30

So women can get 5 female specific cancers, vulva, vaginal, cervix, ovarian and womb.

Anyone interested I follow Eve appeal on Instagram and it's fascinating how few women know their own cancers, and very frightening.

Men 3 have testicular, prostrate and penial cancer, so we only have two extra, as we can all get the others, so I'm not convinced it's cancer linked. As someone said the medical biases towards men getting better and faster treatment would mean they'd be ok.

I like the theory on us being useful in society, that makes sense.

I think men cancel out a lot of the advantage they get in that by delaying going to the doctor so much.

Twofurrycatsagain · 13/05/2020 01:45

I think this is a multifaceted . Some will be genetic factors, some societal, some behavioural. Suicide rates in men are higher, industrial accidents certainly used to be higher. Certainly in the past maternal deaths were higher than now.

DC1JackieReid · 14/05/2020 02:00

Industrial accidents were higher when were an industrial society but we’ve been a consumer based economy for a very long time now, so that can’t be removed completely from the equation, but is definitely not as large a factor. (Bauman 1988) if I remember correctly may have the year wrong and can’t be bothered digging out old texts

DC1JackieReid · 14/05/2020 02:01

Not death stats, industrial vs consumer society.
