Hello all

Please help if you know what could work

My arm went numb last week
Left it for few days said nothing
Went to a and e after 5 days as it suddenly started to swell

X ray came back clear
They said they had no idea what is happening
Now my other arm painful
Mainly my wrists
Can't type on laptop can't hold pen

What the heck??
I am off work due to stress wondering if it is linked?
Over the counter what could I ask pharmacist for?
Will go back to doc next week as no appointments this week

I had long term numbness in one arm and hand, and lost the grip in my fingers. This was in 'normal times' and after initial checks to rule out anything fatal, I was referred to a neurologist ... which took 11 months by which time it had very slowly cleared up by itself, and the nerve conduction tests not surprisingly showed nothing wrong, so I still don't know why it happened.

My best guess is some kind of trapped nerve so on that basis I would be asking about anti-inflammatories.

Sorry I can't be more encouraging. My experience was that once they were sure it wasn't the beginnings of a stroke or heart attack, it got shoved to the bottom of the pile. If it happens again I would be tempted to get it checked out privately while it was still active, but obviously that too might be difficult in the current climate.

Have they checked b12 levels? My hands and arm went numb when I had very low levels.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/05/2020 17:43

Are you menopause age? My arms went a bit numb.

CSIblonde · 12/05/2020 17:47

Carpal tunnel syndrome or maybe RSI (I got that after years of heavy duty copy typing as legal sec) or even nerve damage maybe re the numbness ? (have you done any heavy lifting or lots of gardening) ? I'm going off a colleague who had similar symptoms & ended up going privately as her GP & the NHS consultant were mystified. She got a carpal tunnel diagnosis & was told to get a gel wrist wrest for work. My RSI was in my elbows, v sharp knife like stabbing pain, prob as I'd always insisted on wrist rests so my wrists didn't get hammered doing years of copy typing .

Any neck or shoulder pain? An impinged nerve in the neck or shoulder can be responsible

inwood · 12/05/2020 17:48

Carpal tunnel?

dublingirl653 · 12/05/2020 18:02

Thank you so much

Ok that is very useful

No neck pain
Mostly left arm but also some pain in right wrist

All happened suddenly

No huge exertion
Can't work at min
In my mid 30s

Are you working at a kitchen table not a desk at home. You may find when sat you are hunching your shoulders. A desk assessment starts with drop arms to your sides, then make a 90 degree angle with your elbows. This is the height to adjust your chair, desk, feet too. I am short so have to sit on blocks to raise me high enough not to hunch. Then a footrest(cooking books) to make my knees at 90 dgreei.

Try not to lean forward if you can. A poor desk set up can cause a world of pain.

dublingirl653 · 12/05/2020 18:14

Oh my gosh yes

Did not even think back to this
Not working at min due to stress so wasn't sure if it was linked
So painful

Felt so bad going to a and e but it was just the numbness then swelllen suddenly
They had to cut my rings off

That sounds a bit more than a desk issue but mine was coupled with an old whiplash injury and lack of yoga/ stretching and DH had to pull me out of bed screaming in pain.

How are you sitting? Poor posture? Stress carried in your shoulders?
Some hand numbness issues can start in the shoulders. Mught be worth looking at some gentle stretches to at least give you mobility. It might not be the answer but can't do any harm either.

Great many thanks
My posture is awful

Plus my desk top situation not ideal
