To ask for your New York at Christmas recommendations

So as we really don't want to be going to Greece in July and we couldn't cancel for free at this point we've swapped to 5 days in New York the week before Christmas.

I know there's still a risk that things won't be open as they were before so we won't be booking anything for a while but I'm keen to pull together a bit of a loose itinerary and some ideas of what we want to see.

I've got all the big Christmas events such as the Rockettes show and ice skating but what else should we do? Any advice or recommendations for a first visit? We're staying at the Districkt hotel which is near to Times Square/Madame Tussauds. Any restaurant recommendations would be great as well. We're two late 20s adults, no kids and love food but nothing overly pretentious.

Also DP is keen to visit Brooklyn but what should we specifically see there or is it just a case of wandering around?

TIA!

Shamelessly place marking!

I love New York at Christmas time. I hope you’re able to go, OP!

We’re the same as you, late 20s/early 30s with no kids. Things I’d recommend:

  • Go for a drink at Bar SixtyFive at the top of Rockefeller centre. It’s a fraction of the price of a Top of the Rock ticket and the view is the same!
  • Walk the Brooklyn bridge, and spend some time in Brooklyn, particularly Williamsburg. Lovely area with lots of little restaurants, shops and cafes.
  • We loved the downtown area around Wall Street and One WTC. The 9/11 museum is emotional but well worth a visit. The best time to see the memorial fountains is early morning, before 9am.
  • Bryant Park has a fabulous Christmas market and ice rink.

For food (we love our food) I’d recommend:

  • Breakfast in Pershing Square, which is directly opposite the main entrance to Grand Central.
  • Juliana’s Pizza in Brooklyn, or Rubirosa.
  • If you like steak, Keen’s steakhouse is phenomenal. We go back every time we’re in NY but it’s very, very pricey!
  • Foods of NY food tours are great. We’ve done the Greenwich Village one and the Chelsea Market one. Both were great value, and I’d recommend visiting both of these areas even if you don’t do a food tour! I’d love to live in Greenwich Village Grin

I could talk about New York all day!
