How soon can I take a pregnancy test and what are the chances?

Posting here for traffic because I never seem to get any answers elsewhere as I’m not currently pregnant and I’m a mother of a new baby so not sure where that fits! So if anyone could offer me some advice that would be great.

I had a csection 5 weeks ago and started having sex a week after. Before anyone says, I know it’s not recommended and the body needs to heal, my midwife said it was okay if I felt ready, but again I know it’s not recommended because of the risk of infection etc. Anyway, we’ve been using condoms up until last week when we used the pull out method. Stupid I know after just having a baby. I’m yet to have a period and I have been bleeding ever since the csection albeit it has slowed down to almost nothing now. 5 weeks after birth I am still having food aversions and cravings, I know this can be normal but literally all I have eaten is mac and cheese, party rings and cereal for 5 weeks straight - I can’t stomach anything else! I’ve started getting cramps so hoping my period is coming soon but no show yet. So my question is what are the chances of getting pregnant having just had a baby and having done it the pull out method, and how soon can I take a test as it was last week? Not sure if it differs after just having a baby and I can’t find anything online. Again... been very stupid. I want to take one today but aware that I’m likely to get a negative either way if it’s too soon?

I think it's advised 2 weeks after unprotected sex and if you are still concerned even if it's negative then take another a week later. I don't know what the chances are so soon after birth, sorry!

Sexnotgender · 12/05/2020 13:18

I’d be taking a test if I were you!

VodkaCranberry2 · 12/05/2020 13:21

I definitely will @sexnotgender - just wondering if it’s too soon or I should wait?

I thought it was super unlikely to get pregnant using withdrawal method?

Sexnotgender · 12/05/2020 13:22

You’ve been having unprotected sex for 4 weeks now, it’s not too early to test.

debbs77 · 12/05/2020 13:23

I'd be buying 50 internet therapies and testing daily!

AldiAisleOfCrap · 12/05/2020 13:23

Ten days after sex with a FRER. It’s extremely unlikely that you got pregnant four weeks after giving birth. Six weeks is more possible.

VodkaCranberry2 · 12/05/2020 13:23

No I haven’t @sexnotgender we were using condoms up until that one time last week.

They actually say you are more fertile if recently pregnant, why so many fall pregnant straight after a miscarriage. Take a test 3 weeks after sex as you may have ovulated later in that week. If negative you should be ok

VodkaCranberry2 · 12/05/2020 13:24

What’s a FRER @@AldiAisleOfCrap ?

Ah ok. It sounded like you’d been using the withdrawal method the whole time.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 12/05/2020 13:27

“First response early result” pregnancy test.

I thought it was super unlikely to get pregnant using withdrawal method?

It's generally quoted as being approximately 80% effective. Or to put it another way, if 100 women use the withdrawal method for a year, 20 will become pregnant.

Sperm can live in the body for up to five days, which means conception can happen later than sex, depending on when you ovulate. A pregnancy test usually takes around 12-14 days post ovulation to show positive, sometimes more. So give yourself a minimum of three weeks from when you had sex.

But if you only had unprotected sex a week ago then your symptoms are unlikely to be pregnancy, a fertilised egg would barely have had the chance to implant yet.
