Holiday refund or rebook

VivienScott · 11/05/2020 22:06

Just wondering what people are thinking about doing where holidays have been cancelled and they’ve been offered the choice of the (eventual) refund or rebook for a later date but with a 20% off voucher.
I obviously like the idea of 20% off, but thought of holiday company holding onto my cash for over a year irks me. Particularly as I could use it for other things in the interim. I’m also concerned about the sort of holiday that might be available next year, either not as good or just lack of flights etc making booking holidays more difficult or expensive.
What are other people doing?

Refund

Refund who knows what the situation will be next year?

MsVestibule · 11/05/2020 22:40

If I was in your situation, I'd rebook. We have no idea how expensive flights will be next year - my suspicion is that they'll be very expensive as there'll be less competition. What would happen to your money if the travel company went under?

As the money is budgeted for anyway (so you're not really missing out on it), you're not really losing out.

Refund. I'm in Oz & Virgin has gone into administration. Several large travel providers either have, or are close to it as well. It's possible people will lose their money altogether. It's stressful.

We were supposed to be going to Japan in April. It took 8 weeks and a LOT of waiting on hold, paperwork and waiting for refunds. But that money is now sitting in our mortgage keeping interest down & we have no pressure to rebook & can pick deals & pay without stuffing around with credit.

I've booked a holiday to Devin mid-July. Hopefully I'll be able to go (just in a chalet). If not I'll get a re-book as I got it for a stupidly low price and I reckon holiday companies will be upping their prices massively next year, because people will pay through the nose to get away

Refund. Too much uncertainty and the company could go bust before you get chance to go on the rebooked holiday.

FrankRattlesnake · 11/05/2020 23:31

The safest thing to do is get a refund - if you rebook and it gets cancelled you will only be able to rebook again and not get a refund. However, it depends on the company. We have flights with easyJet and could have got a refund but chose to rebook knowing the risk, we go on this route a few times a year so rebooking again isn’t really a problem and the cost of the flights will increase I think. The money saving experts had some interesting BF advice on this and about supporting the businesses if you can.

Mintychoc1 · 11/05/2020 23:34

I’ve heard that if you rebook, then the following year your holiday won’t be covered by ABTA, so if the company crashed you’d end up getting nothing.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/05/2020 23:35

Refund. I've just got one as I'd rather have the money earning interest in my savings account than in the coffers of some faceless company.

Lavenderpurple · 11/05/2020 23:38

Refund. I wouldn’t want the risk of the company going bust.

I am pushing for a refund from Ryanair. They have offered vouchers but I don't want them so next step is credit card chargeback.

CoRhona · 12/05/2020 00:07

I have just got a credit card purely so I can put some of our monthly payments on it to do a section 75 (?) chargeback if necessary.

I hate bloody vouchers.

I had booked theatre tickets for a performance that was cancelled and the theatre didn't offer a refund at all (I started a chargeback on my debit card for that as it was a lot less £ than the holiday). The options from the theatre were either vouchers, or to donate the cost back to the theatre. A refund wasn't even mentioned. Hmm
