To ask if you are still going on your France holiday this summer?

Just that really. We have a family holiday booked to go to France this August and were very much looking forward to it. However, given the situation, we are unsure of whether to go or not. We have booked with Brittany Ferries and they have given us the option of taking a credit note for the deposit we have already paid and using it to rebook at a later date. Alternatively, we can go ahead with the holiday.

The holiday home itself is in rural France but the worry is over taking the crowded ferry to get to France.

Has anyone else booked a similar holiday for this year? What are you planning on doing? We're so confused about what to do Confused our hearts say go but our heads say don't take the risk and take the credit note.

the quarantine rules wont apply to france so if they say you can go you might aswell go

i dont know why they think virus doesnt afffect us or france but it must be a business agreement

LilacTree1 · 11/05/2020 21:20

Indeed.

If I was rich I’d literally do a day trip on the Eurostar now. It’s allowed.

Ulysses · 11/05/2020 21:20

We got in touch with the campsite owners and it was their opinion that it might not open until August and our holiday is for the beginning of July. We had paid a deposit but have carried it over until 2021. We wouldn't have been going anyway as DH is shielding even if other restrictions were lifted. I can't see us leaving the UK this year.

GreenPlum · 11/05/2020 21:21

I've got flights only booked and paid for Aug 1st. Thought we wouldn't be allowed to travel and I'd get a refund but today I'm not so sure. Really don't want to go. Would accept credit, voucher, transfer for next year etc. but doubt Jet2 will do that.

Hollyhead · 11/05/2020 21:21

Don’t know - we’ve got a Brittany ferries camping holiday booked at end of August, balance due soon. Not sure what to do yet. Not so worried about mixing on the ferry as I’ve booked cabins for both legs so worst case scenario it would be only the walk up the stairs from car port to cabin, possibly wearing masks that would be risky.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/05/2020 21:24

Gabsalot
It is a transitional agreement to prevent us from starving.

burntpinky · 11/05/2020 21:24

We were due to go first week of June but our ferry has been cancelled. We’ve asked if we can move it to next year because I’m pregnant and I just don’t see us being able to go before the time I’m allowed on a boat runs out. If they say no (private rental) we will just claim on insurance.

Disappointed not to be going obvs but it is what it is and everyone in the same boat (pardon the pun)

fralaloptitier · 11/05/2020 21:25

@LilacTree1 and others - it is allowed at the moment for "essential" travel, not for holidays, surely

1frenchfoodie · 11/05/2020 21:26

*If I was rich I’d literally do a day trip on the Eurostar now. It’s allowed’

It is not allowed, you need to present an essential travel (international attestation) form which has very narrow reasons for entry in to France (return home, essential work, transit mainly) general tourism is not an allowed category.

Fuckfuckfuckshit · 11/05/2020 21:26

We have one booked end of August and yes I expect and hope we will be going

LilacTree1 · 11/05/2020 21:27

I can’t find any information to say essential travel only

Keir Starmer mentioned this in Parliament and Johnson’s reply didn’t mention essential travel.

LilacTree1 · 11/05/2020 21:28

1french thanks. I thought it was odd.

I wonder if anyone's actually checking?

Oly4 · 11/05/2020 21:31

The Macron/Johnson deal says we won’t have to quarantine either side so I’m working on the basis it will still go ahead late August. We are going via the tunnel and driving there, staying in a lodge all self catering. If we can go we will use the same social distancing principles we use at home. But with a change of scenery and wine!

Daffodil101 · 11/05/2020 21:34

I reckon that’ll be ok, oly4

AuldAlliance · 11/05/2020 21:37

Things might be clearer in 3-4 weeks, when the effects of the easing of lockdown that began today become apparent. Macron made it clear that he might tighten it again.
French people have been advised not to plan holidays (incl in France) yet, because it is too uncertain. I'm in the SE and we've been wondering whether we'll be allowed to leave our region.

Coffeecak3 · 11/05/2020 21:37

I spoke to some friends in the Dordogne and some neighbouring British second home owners turned up last week. They had come via the tunnel and were not stopped by anyone.

GlowWine · 11/05/2020 21:39

@Knoxinbox if you read more closely you will find that this is a collective commiserating discussion of holiday cancellation. Nobody would be planning one now! Ours was booked last autumn. Can't blame us for entertaining a tiniest speck of hope that the situation will have improved by August.

@Toomuchgoingon exactly, the ferries, even if going back to taking passengers, will also be operating different schedules, so I'm kind of waiting for them to cancel, I guess that puts me in a better situation regarding refunds?

lachy · 11/05/2020 21:39

Our holiday was booked for 5th June to a Eurocamp site, ferry was also booked. We'd booked way before Christmas and paid in full (thankfully on the credit card)

Obviously we aren't going, and have ruled out going later in the year. I think we'll push for a refund rather than take a credit voucher though.

Frostylawns · 11/05/2020 21:39

@Knoxinbox

We booked in October last year. We supposedly go in early July to Spain with Brittany Ferries then drive through France staying at 4 different campsites in total. Even if we can’t go to Spain we’re still hopeful that we may, just maybe, will get to go to France and stay there for the 2 weeks.

Our main campsite is fully paid and our final balance for our ferry is due on Wednesday. We’ll pay and just wait & see.

We always book in October or November to get the campsites and ferry routes - we take our caravan so need to book way in advance to get the sites we want. So best laid plans, etc, etc

Onthedancefloor · 11/05/2020 21:40

We have a holiday booked in August - ferry to Rotterdam and staying at holiday park recommended on here. I checked their website today and the holiday park is open - they are opening up their water park this week. A lot of the rest of Europe is starting to get back to normal.

Travel wise - the ferry company is currently running a limited service but for travel to France you need to complete a form with reasons for travel, e.g. attending a close relative's funeral, was given as an acceptable reason. Hopefully this will widen over the next few months, as a lot has already changed over the last few weeks.

TobyDeLaris · 11/05/2020 21:42

Dd was due to go on a school trip to Paris in July. Arranged last September. I'm hoping the school/Paris/Covid19 will let them rebook in July 21

Angelil · 11/05/2020 21:43

We're still going in July, but to see and stay with family, not to dick around on the beaches and clog up tourist areas. Believe me, NOBODY has even heard of where we are going.

Swingingontheswing · 11/05/2020 21:45

No. And sadly we will lose quite a lot of money as the flights won't be refunded. The Irish Gov have advised us that people won't be going abroad this year so that is that really.

We wouldn't go even if the campsite does open, the experience wouldn't be the same and going through two airports, a car hire, service stations, public bathrooms, not being able to eat out, not have a couple of glasses of wine in a restaurant, wiping down everything constantly while ensuring my young children aren't touching things would be far too stressful.

itsgoodtobehome · 11/05/2020 21:50

We are planning to go to our house in France in August. We would travel on the Eurotunnel, so minimal contact, and drive all the way there. It’s our own private house, so no other people there and we would live pretty much as we have been over here. If we are able to go, we will. However, we will respect any guidance from the French authorities if they tell us not to come.

CherryPavlova · 11/05/2020 21:51

No. Our boat is in France and it’s having a season off with a bit of a refit in place of using her. Too complicated, VNF have waterways closed until further notice and restrictions on other things likely.
