AIBU to solve the mystery of the flappy gusset?

So I noticed that some of my knickers from M&S have a rather strange gusset feature, in that it is not sewn in around all four edges leaving a rather odd pocket at the front. This troubled me greatly as my life is fairly dull and empty, so I decided to have a knicker gusset comparison study with my other underwear purchased from other companies. Most of the other pantage from other vendors had the gusset sewn in properly. What is the mystery pocket that M&S has kindly added actually for? AIBU for wanting to know the purpose of this odd little flap (pun intended)?

A friend of mine believes it's to tuck your penis in so it doesnt flap around I've never asked if its comfortable or if it's true because it's such a random statement for this particular person to make I just said ahh right I see and changed the subject

If you read some of the lingerie reviews on M&S website you’ll find that some men use it to tuck themselves in.

I'd probably laugh and leak on the emergency £10 note.

PragmaticWench · 11/05/2020 17:24

It's so the prettier knickers don't have a seam showing across the front of the outside then?

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 11/05/2020 17:28

Wow! Now I know, thanks OP! I have genuinely wondered the same thing myself!

EngagedAgain · 11/05/2020 17:28

Bazookas, at least the new notes are waterproof 😂

When I was younger and would go raving in the 90s that pocket would be very very handy....Grin

Thank you for cheering me up today!

You got me thinking about the flappy gussets in all the underwear my sweet late grandma insisted on buying for me from teenagehood right until my early adulthood. (She thought it was a super useful gift, obviously I was buying my own underwear at that age but she insisted you can never have enough underwear!) I always used to wonder about it but never actually questioned it any further... I had forgotten all about it! Finally I know! Grin

I am impressed, I have never in my nearly 60 years ever heard of anyone making their own knickers!

lovemelongtime · 11/05/2020 18:06

in my club going days we used to use them to smuggle illegals into clubs. No-one checked down there :-)

Sockbogies · 11/05/2020 19:51

I’m not sure I believe it’s a design feature. Imagine your partner asking you to go slip on a sexy pair of knickers “you know, the ones I like with the floating gusset”.

My husband has just asked me what I was reading and I replied ‘floating gussets’. Killed that conversation in its tracks.

Hiding drugs

Hmm
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/05/2020 20:00

the £10 won't be very covid friendly.
there's a reason stores are preferring cards over dirty cash.

Likethebattle · 11/05/2020 20:00

Many of mine have it including some shorts styles from primark.

1Morewineplease · 11/05/2020 20:12

A PP has hinted that it might be for sanitary ware.
I’m pretty sure that it’s a throw back to a few decades ago when you could ( attempt, but fail as they were too bulky) slip a sanitary pad in.
I’m prepared to be proved wrong.

Nottherealslimshady · 11/05/2020 20:48

I imagine the ones with the "floating" gusset dont have a seam showing on the front whereas the others do? So that could be aesthetic point.
I always thought that if it was sewn on all edges then it would wrinkle and you'd never get the wrinkles out.

This was discussed at length on the MN feminist board a few months ago, in connection with the fact that M&S allow men into the female changing rooms, and that cross-dressing men or men with autogynephilia like to try on women's underwear and sometimes even masturbate in the undies.

As a result, many MN gendercritical women refuse to buy M&S lingerie.

M&S know about this, as they allow men to post reviews about doing so.

MadamBatty · 15/05/2020 17:24

why shouldn’t women’s knickers have a special gusset to tuck your lady penis in?? you don’t want it lopping all around the place do you??

66redballons · 15/05/2020 17:29

@slipperywhensparticus. Tuck penis into !!!! Who’s penis, the lingerie wearer !

66redballons · 15/05/2020 17:31

@Lamahaha. Ewwww!! Gross I will only buy sealed packs of under crackers from this day forward.

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 17:33

so you can collect sand on the beach with it?
(I have a m&s swimming costume with this feature)

Quillink · 15/05/2020 17:34

I remember those M n S gusset reviews Shock Did they get deleted?

CottonSock · 15/05/2020 17:36

Floating gussets, I'm wondering if that m&s guy had a straight face writing that. Gave me a laugh
