Is it now time for an 'English' government?

The UK government has just published its strategy for coming out of lockdown. However the vast majority of the strategy is for England only.

Boris is the Prime Minister of the UK but is also the leader of the government in England even though it doesn't legally exist as England doesn't have devolution. Matt Hancock is the health Secretary for England only. Dominic Rabb however is the first secretary of state for the UK as defence minister.

Given some of the confusion about the changes in guidance announced yesterday and MSM not being wholey clear the changes are for England only, surely it is time to look to have a bit more distinction between both of Boris's roles and the powers he has for England only.

I am from Scotland and whilst I believe in a federal uk this isn't a thread about Scottish independence.

I’d let Scotland have independence. It’ll be a shit show. They’d be bankrupt right now if they’d got it.

I say all this as a Scottish person. It’s a cult up there and I despise the SNP

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:08

Resorting to calling her Krankie. Are you 5?

TheThingWithFeathers · 11/05/2020 17:10

It's way past time for this. Devolution for three out of four countries makes no sense. Create an English parliament, make a reformed House of Commons the upper legislative chamber, and do away with the House of Lords. But I doubt it will ever happen because the vast majority of English people would not understand the need for it.

emz771 · 11/05/2020 17:11

Sorry to be clear - I like Scotland, like the Scottish people, but can’t stand her. No part of the UK can live without London subsidising it.

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:14

Aye "they would sink without our money" sounds as if you like Scottish folk.

emz771 · 11/05/2020 17:14

I worded it badly - apologies - she just grinds my gears.

ukgift2016 · 11/05/2020 17:16

Why are we so desperate to keep hold of Scotland?

How can they afford free tuition fees etc yet England cant? Let them be independent.

ellzebellze · 11/05/2020 17:35

I've been saying this for years, OP.

I don't get why the others have their own parliament/assembly and can make devolved decisions, and England can't. How come Scotland gets to vote on English matters, but not the other way round, for example? It's baffling.

VimtoCordial · 11/05/2020 17:39

It doesn't.

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:40

I thought because of EVEL Scottish MPs DIDNT vote on English only matters.

Was there not a referendum or vote a few years back for regional assemblies in England which was roundly defeated?

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:43

How can they afford free tuition fees etc yet England cant

That's just how the SG has decided to spend it's budget. Take your Oak Academy online learning - England only Scotland doesn't have access to tbat

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:46

I've seen this mentioned a few times - it's not confusing at all. MSM has always played to its largest demographic IE England. That's why the Daily Mail has a Scottish edition which widely contradicts the 'english' version.

If in England listen to Boris if in a devolved country listen to your First Minister

TheSmelliestHouse · 11/05/2020 17:47

Absolutely yes

Hadenoughfornow · 11/05/2020 17:47

That would have been before the Brexit vote......

VimtoCordial · 11/05/2020 17:51

There was, I think it was in the North East. However, from what I can recall it was presented very badly as another layer of bureaucracy which anyone would go snoozefest on.

I wonder if the best way forward is to start by abolishing all local councils and reduce bureaucracy that way, like Cornwall have done. Then give the single councils devolved powers and increase these over time. It seems more organic. Make the new areas mean something though, and work towards them being federalised areas overtime. Such as the whole of Yorkshire, or Lancashire, places that have a history, rather than newly made boundaries round areas with no history.

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:55

The amount of people posting on here moaning about Scotland - Scotland can't do anything to help England with this! If it means that much to you campaign for it, shout about it, don't deride another Country for having what you don't.

KuckFnows · 11/05/2020 17:55

There was a referendum for this a few years back...

KuckFnows · 11/05/2020 17:56

Scotland are fine taking the money though...

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 17:59

We do generate some money up here you know (along with housing a nuclear deterrent next to one of our major cities and generating lots of electricity for England)

mondaywine · 11/05/2020 18:01

Anyone can access Oak Academy online. It’s English curriculum based but as we add, subtract, multiply and divide in the same way that’s no big issue. Almost all commercial online resources as based on the English Curriculum.

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2020 18:09

It's never been advertised up here as a resource

*Why are we so desperate to keep hold of Scotland?

Personally, I like having some balance in UK parliament. Imagining a near 100% Tory majority in Westminster feels me with dread. Also, I quite like Scotland, and am descended from Scottish grandparents. Lots of relatives up there. So I'm not "desperate", but I would be sad on a personal level if they went independent.

And they get free prescriptions and etc, because that's what they decided to do with their budget.

Utterlydespairing · 11/05/2020 18:12

They roads are embarrassing up there. They don’t spend it on what Scotland needs, just what gets them votes like tuition and prescriptions. It’s a disgrace what they let Scotland become

lyralalala · 11/05/2020 18:18

For the same reason my DD got to see a specialist for her condition in 14 weeks where as my niece in Scotland waited 11 months for the same condition - different priorities.

We can't demand all the good bits that Scotland get whilst ignoring the crap bits.

FlaskMaster · 11/05/2020 18:22

I fucking KNEW it wasn't going to be someone from England saying this! Send Nicola down here, or wait til I can move up there!
