Telling boss about pregnancy because company making redundancies?

Sorry I’m shamelessly posting for traffic.
I have just overheard my directors talking about making redundancies today. I knew it was coming but didn’t think it would be so soon.
I found out I am pregnant over the weekend, my director is like my second mum and does know I have been trying for a very long time. But in light of making these redundancies I am wondering whether I should tell her today I am pregnant so she doesn’t make someone redundant that will be needed when I’m gone?
Or would this backfire on me? What if I get made redundant because I’m pregnant?! Panicking slightly now.
FWIW I am the longest standing employee in the business and am a manager.
Thanks in advance

Okay so this is difficult. How far on are you? There are laws in the UK about maternity discrimination so telling her could actually work in your favour as they might not want to fall foul of them. However on the other hand they could work a way round it based on your position and you bring most expensive.

Daffodil21 · 11/05/2020 10:28

I wouldn't say anything. She knows you are trying, that alone may skew their decisions.

I very much think it will be a 'you or them' situation, and if you want your job to go back to I would keep quiet!!!

Congratulations btw!!!

BBBear · 11/05/2020 10:44

Assuming you want to keep your job, don’t say anything.

fungalinthejungle · 11/05/2020 10:56

If they know you’re pregnant you might be more likely to keep your job so that they can’t be accused of discriminating against you because you’re pregnant

Daffodil21 · 11/05/2020 10:58

@fungalinthejungle possibly, but if they're already making other people redundant they'd probably be able to find reasoning for it

Congratulations!
The laws are very strict about maternity, employment and discrimination. Whilst it's not 'impossible' to lawfully make a pregnant woman redundant, the employer has to ensure that she hasn't be discriminated against on the basis she is pregnant. Poor work record, numerous (not pregnancy related absences) and a record of disciplinaries, then it may be justifiable to make them redundant. Long standing, senior employee with an outstanding record at work, not so justifiable and you could have a claim for discrimination.
Tell your employer OP, the law is very much on your side.

I'd absolutely tell her as quickly as possible. As a PP said, they can make you redundant when you are pregnant but it's really complicated, and the company are unlikely to want to take the risk that they find themselves on the other end of a discrimination case.

FizzyGreenWater · 11/05/2020 12:10

Tell her as quickly as possible - in writing.

Once they officially know you are pregnant, they have a lot more hoops to jump through before they can make you redundant.

slashlover · 11/05/2020 12:22

I thought the rules were so pregnant women can't be discriminated against just because of the pregnancy. Turns out they were so pregnant women can force employers to keep them employed even if they might not be the best people. Equality!
