Difference in Lockdown in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales

caroloro · 10/05/2020 20:06

Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland - negligible change. Lockdown remains, garden centres can open, can exercise more than once a day locally, libraries and household waste sites might reopen.

England - do what you like but be careful.

Which has it right? Are the devolved nations being overly careful, or is England being too gung ho?

YABU - England has it right
YANBU - Devolved nations have the right idea

I don't think "go back to work if you can do so safely" is a gigantic change. Especially when it's limited in effect while the schools are closed to non-key worker children.

Exercise as much as you like, but don't mix households or the fine will be higher.

Hardly "do what you like"

LuluPDB · 10/05/2020 20:13

Did you watch the speech Boris gave? It was hardly do what you like...

You are free to excercise more and go back to work if you couldn't before but nothing else has changed?

No mixing of households, meeting people, shops opening. Everything else is to stay the same as it currently is. He has barely relaxed anything...

caroloro · 10/05/2020 20:14

@lyralalala

He said people coukd go where they liked, veach, pucnuc, park etc.... That us a MASSIVE change to the stay at home message. It does sound like do what you like, rather than only travel when essential.

Of course it's not do what you like in England FFS.

Perhaps we are being treated like we have the intelligence to adjust to a small amount of additional freedom, but given the posts on here after his speech perhaps BJ is wrong to assume that intelligence, we will see.

Personally I am pleased with the planned relaxation and as a paid up member of the Labour party I don't say that easily. But certainly a lot more clarification is required and very soon given the comments and questions being asked on here and especially if people can interpret it as "do what you like" FFS.

BTW I certainly hope garden centres will be opening on England too, was absolutely relying on that!

Maybelatte · 10/05/2020 20:25

The government have handled this so poorly it’s ridiculous. The advice has never been strong enough and people have taken the piss. There will be a second peak and I suspect it will happen very soon given the number of VE Day parties I witnessed.

MintyChapstick · 10/05/2020 20:25

People in Wales are now rightly concerned that lots of English folk will flock over the border to our beaches etc. We had problems right at the start of all this with English people descending on Snowdonia en masse.

isadoradancing123 · 10/05/2020 20:27

The basic message is still stay at home, he has made it pretty clear

caroloro · 10/05/2020 20:27

@lindainlockdown

Maybe I heard it wrong, but I'm pretty sure Boris said people could go where they wanted, whenever they wanted, for whatever reason they wanted (I. E do what they like) as long as they're careful? Pretty huge difference to essential journeys only!

OP posts:
Vinipote · 10/05/2020 20:30

I agree @MintyChapstick, it was ridiculous. Locals are now worried that there will be another surge in people driving here to walk up Snowdon.. Etc, etc

loveisanopensore · 10/05/2020 20:30

Ireland isn't devolved nation. It's an independent republic.

LittleBearPad · 10/05/2020 20:30

He absolutely didn’t say people could do what they wanted!

LindainLockdown · 10/05/2020 20:33

This is what he said:

And from this Wednesday, we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.
You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household.

For me that does not mean travelling a long way to other destinations but I would agree this point needs more clarity, as some will just take the piss and will be swamping holiday places again before we know it.

nonevernotever · 10/05/2020 20:42

Some of it is down to regional variations in infection rates. I think Scotland is further behind in the infection curve so makes sense to stay in lockdown.

ballsdeep · 10/05/2020 20:44

I hope, if anyone from England tries to come to Wales to exercise they are sent back quickly

Grilledaubergines · 10/05/2020 22:43

It’s already been said on the programmed immediately after his speech that no one can cross the border from England to Wales. So no need to get all flappy.

What’s happened to NS’s bubble of 10 she was proposing?

NorthernLass75 · 10/05/2020 22:46

OP, if you report your post and ask add “Northern” in front of Ireland, MNHQ will change it for you.

Just so you’re getting the right response as it’s confusing as is.

I came on to discuss what Ireland os doing but see that’s not what you wish to cover.

lyralalala · 10/05/2020 22:48

What’s happened to NS’s bubble of 10 she was proposing?

She wasn't proposing it. She was asked about it and said that, like lots of other things, it was something they were looking into.

She's made very clear that as far as the Scottish Government are concerned nothing is changing bar the exercise guideline and they are looking into re-starting some of the screening programmes when possible.

Snaga · 10/05/2020 22:50

So no need to get all flappy.

There are already fuckwits of England residing origin coming to Wales for a wander on a beach or to climb a mountain during lockdown

Now the fuckwits will think Boris has given them permission to do so. The Welsh and probably Scottish are rightly concerned this was not clear enough in Boris' message. Afterwards is too late because they'll ignore that...after all it wasn't said by the mighty BoJo!

I can't imagine that folk in picturesque parts of England are best pleased either.

TeaAndBiscuits666 · 10/05/2020 23:02

I think England have been right to start to move away from the "stay at home" language.

Wales are insisting that it is still "stay at home", but they're opening garden centres and libraries. Bit contradictory, unless these places are allowed to be open but not allowed customers.
