To really not understand why people are OK with cats

Full disclosure, I'm allergic to cats and also very much a dog person but I really don't understand how it's acceptable for cats to go round decimating local wildlife and crapping in gardens.

I've lost count of how many times I've had to pick cat poo off the lawn and my daughter came in yesterday with cat sick all over her feet as a local moggie had vommed on our patio. I'm sick of it. It's a health hazard and you shouldn't have to wear a hazmat suit to go in your own garden.

We have tadpoles outside which are about to froglet and I've just seen a fat cat with its head in the water. I'm fuming, a few of the tadpoles are injured and this is the same cat I had to get off a terrified bird last week.

I'm not remotely sentimental about nature, if a hungry creature kills another then that's how life works. However I cannot understand how people can let these cats out knowing that they're injuring animals for no reason and causing health hazards to other people in their own home.

I couldn't take my dog for a shit in your garden so why can your cat do that in mine? They're not even natural predators as they just trot home to get their whiskers.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

Birds are also a right pain, pooing everywhere and eating worms. Should we get rid of them too?

HandfulOfFlowers · 11/05/2020 17:45

I like both cats and dogs, but I think overall dogs do more damage to society because irresponsible ownership has greater consequences in terms of poo not picked up, prolonged barking due to being left alone all day and attacks on children and other dogs.

VeganVeal · 11/05/2020 17:52

Dont talk to me about crapping in gardens. Yesterday a huge German Shepard did a massive poo in my front garden but I managed to chase him off. Just looked out the window and he's there again, this time he's brought his dog with him!

LST · 11/05/2020 17:55

@frillyfucks do you want a troll badge?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2020 18:32

but cat owners are mostly wanting a 'cheap' pet and don't want to deal with their pet's shit.

Can someone tell my cat that he's supposed to be a cheap pet? He's cost thousands over the years!

Every person thinks that their cat does not hunt - they all do

Mine definitely doesn't! The garden is cat proofed and no birds come in as I've never bothered feeding them so they have no reason to.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2020 18:34

My cat doesn't roll on dead animals or in crap either. He also doesn't crap in the middle of the path or by someone's gate.

No, just in their flower beds or on their lawn.

No he doesn't actually, the garden is cat proofed

Amatteroftime · 11/05/2020 18:35

I don't dislike all cats, but do particularly dislike the one next door. I used to have small furries in the house and it would come in through open windows and eye them up, even though I have a dog who dislikes cats (because of this one scratching at him as a pup).
It is always shitting in my garden, even though it knows full well the dog is about.

MissConductUS · 11/05/2020 18:47

At our old house there was a neighbors cat that would sit on our deck and leisurely lick it's butt, just to piss off my two indoor only cats. So of course we referred to the cat as Butt Lick.

My cats are indoors only at this house because we have coyotes in this area. They do however have a second story deck that looks out over their royal domain the adjacent woods so they get a bit of variety and fresh air.

I know that indoor only cats are considered an abomination on MN, but it's always worked for us and saved the cats from lots of potential hazards.

frillyfucks · 11/05/2020 19:19

@LST I'm not even a troll. If I see a cat on my farm it gets barrelled.

Shmithecat2 · 11/05/2020 19:31

@frillyfucks

Why shoot it? It's free pest control.

TheGinGenie · 11/05/2020 19:43

The Ancient Egyptians had it right- cats are gods

(I much prefer cats to children but I don't go around asking why people are okay with children Grin)

FOJN · 11/05/2020 19:51

Cat shit in your garden isn't pleasant but you can buy ultrasonic and spray deterrents. There are also a number of plants which will put cats off coming into your garden. Although in my experience the best deterrent for neighbourhood cats is getting one of your own.

frillyfucks · 11/05/2020 20:15

@Shmithecat2 not when they're nailing songbirds and partridge chicks it isn't.

Shmithecat2 · 11/05/2020 20:46

@frillyfucks

Shmithecat2not when they're nailing songbirds - the RSPB don't think cats are a danger to them so why do you?

and partridge chicks it isn't.

Do you breed them?

frillyfucks · 11/05/2020 20:51

I am definitely not concerned about the RSPB or their agenda at all!

Grey partridge cannot be successfully reared, they are wild in these parts of England although in decline. They, like most ground nesting birds, are decimated by the local cat population. Ironically we didn't have a problem until they built a new housing estate a mile away.

Russellbrandshair · 11/05/2020 21:06

Much prefer an animal that buries it’s shit than one who does it all over the pavement and the owners don’t pick it up

They DONT bury their shit though. Our next door neighbour has 3 cats. They all shit in other people’s gardens and don’t bury it. It’s revolting.

Russellbrandshair · 11/05/2020 21:07

We deal with your kids, you deal with our pets

My kids don’t poo in my neighbours garden and if they did I wouldn’t expect them to be happy about it! Your comparison doesn’t work I’m afraid

VivienScott · 11/05/2020 21:10

My dog catches mice, will crap where ever she pleases, never clears up after herself, happily vomits in shoes, the ones she’s not stolen and chewed of courses, would steal strangers picnics given a chance on a walk and knock their children over. My cats are far less hassle.

TheGoogleMum · 11/05/2020 21:13

I love my cats, they mostly stay indoors and don't venture outside the garden so no problems with killing wildlife or pooing in gardens (They haven't even come it in ours). They are on the nervous side so their affection feels extra special (it did take a while!). Dogs are loud, and lots of owners done pick up dog poo (or leave it hanging in bags in trees for unknown reasons) and dogs much more likely to cause an injury. Also cats are adorable (as are some dogs but they cons definately outweigh the pros for dogs)

radiantrose · 11/05/2020 21:19

I hate cats aswell. Like a PP said, I too was attacked nastily by one when I was younger and left many marks. I always used to catch them shitting in my garden in my previous house. Dirty little things. Very unsociable. Couldn't stand my house and myself plastered in hair 🤢 I honestly fail to understand why people chose to have them.

Bluntness100 · 11/05/2020 21:22

I do get what you mean op, I used to dislike cats, but my friend has one and I’m converted, she’s like a dog and seriously cute.

She’s 18 and if she wants feeding she comes up to you, looks at you and miaows, so you then need to walk to her bowl and sit with her whilst she eats. I’m not kidding. Even though her bowl is always full. She keeps looking at you as she eats too to make sure you’re not going to leave.

When I get up in the morning she gets up too, I’m an early riser, and she comes down stairs with me walking at heel, and loves you to sit and stroke her belly and feed her snacks, she then purrs as she falls asleep as you stroke her belly or under her chin. She will also walk round the garden with you at heel.

She’s turned me into her proper slave. We can all be sitting chatting and she stands up, walks over, sits in front of me and miaows, whilst staring at me intently and off I trot to the kitchen to sit with her whilst she eats. Or she lays at my feet, stretches out, paws me, and I get on the floor and stoke her tummy, it’s batshit. I know it’s batshit but I can’t seem to stop it 🤣

OneForMeToo · 11/05/2020 21:23

My cats don’t leave my garden as they only go out on their tethers. So no decimating wildlife here. Harnessed kitties lol

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 11/05/2020 21:38

Are you SURE it's cat poo? If it stinks and is left in piles on your lawn, I bet it's fox poo.

Cat poo is often quite hard and dry and they usually bury it. We have a cat, we have seen her go off to do her business in a corner of our garden but she buries everything, we never see it at all.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 11/05/2020 21:40

Ps I like my cat. The birds bloody decimate my fruit trees. Since we got the cat the problem is much reduced, although she doesn't actually catch any birds because the bell on her collar gives them a warning. She just scares them off!

cyclingmad · 11/05/2020 21:50

The house opposite used to have 3 cats and I would see then jump out the window onto the extension roof, come into my garden and shit on the grass and not cover it up either! That's just me seeing it whilst in my lounge.

It's disgusting. One cat would poo on the patio and once a cat vomited on it too.

Its definitely not any other animal.

Thankfully that owner moved and the other cats for some reason and thankfully dont, except the white one has taken to chewing on my plants Hmm but I'd rather that then poo.

Anyone who says cats bury their poo all the time is lying. I wonr forget the nasty smell, having to scrape it out the grass before I can cut it especially the one cat who did a very wet poo, I almost threw up from the stink and ended up digging up the grass to remove it.

I don't see why if I choose not to have a pet cos you know I don't want to clear up poo etc that I have to do it cos of other peoples pets. It really isnt fair.
