Keeping children at home until September

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/05/2020 11:50

I work in a school and I'm seeing and hearing a lot of this both on here and in the contact I have with parents. I am worried about how we will manage social distancing and whether we will have PPE if the schools open soon, but I do appreciate the need for kids to be in school, particularly Year 6 and 10.

I also don't know how it will work if a lot of parents chose not send their kids back until September. I wonder just how many parents will do this?

So...
YABU - My kids won't be back until September.
YANBU - My kids will go back as soon as the schools open.

pickup that really is an abomination!

Appuskidu · 12/05/2020 14:55

It’s very handy that they can just say the R number is ‘Somewhere’ between 0.5-0.9 and it’ll perfectly safe to open schools if it’s x. They aren’t going to be specific and can just say a range of numbers that suits them for opening schools.

Led by the science? I honestly doesn’t trust the lot of them.

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/05/2020 15:21

It's also a question of scale. A nationwide R value is quite crude, what you want to know are your local one. If your town's R is 0.9 it matters not one whit that it's nice and low in Cornwall- if people round you start mixing, the virus will start increasing in your community.

Not really sure why the fixation on the September as well. We are in Northern Ireland and have today had our exit plan revealed no school return at all until september and in terms of education certain groups/years are returning on a part time basis in September with distance learning in place to phase this further to having all years in primary schools with part time and distance learning in place and realistically it's looking like the end of the year or 2021 before they will all be back in full time at this stage with the final stage of the plan being to have all early years in full time but beyond that there's no mention of having the rest of them in full time !

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 12/05/2020 15:40

Has Boris said if summer childcare schemes can open? 1st June looks unlikely to happen to hopefully kids in England can get full-time summer childcare during the school holidays.

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/05/2020 15:44

not sure why the fixation with September

the herd will be considerably bigger by September so correspondingly September will be safer for everyone else.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 12/05/2020 15:46

@PickUpAPickUpAPenguin they haven’t. I don’t think they will for some time. They will want to see if schools go back the impact on R. If it’s starts heading over 1 they will say no schemes (or only for keyworkers). If it doesn’t get towards R they will allow some to open.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 12/05/2020 15:54

That's a shame. Schools might not be ready for 1st June but it's a shame that small groups can't be looked after in July/August like they do for keyworker children at schools and childminders.

OnTheMoors · 19/05/2020 17:31

What will people do for childcare if it's back to work in July and no summer holiday childcare is open?

LittleBearPad · 22/05/2020 00:20

But that’s an argument that can be made about January 2021 or beyond. September’s popular because it’s far away. Once August turns up the same people will kick the can further down the road.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 22/05/2020 07:25

@LittleBearPad not sure they will. If some schools have gone back in June and it’s all ok. Wait for people suddenly changing their tune and demanding their kids are in every day.

timeforawine · 22/05/2020 07:42

Mine is going back to nursery on 1st June, if she was in school I'd have been sending her back there.

SallyWD · 22/05/2020 07:56

Mine are year 2 and 4.ill send them back when we can

LittleBearPad · 23/05/2020 08:34

That will happen for some people within days of the schools opening anyway - fomo will kick-in.

But I do think there are people put things off. They’ll want to do it again in August but it’s quite likely from September attendance will be mandatory.

milkysmum · 23/05/2020 11:35

I'm also wondering about childcare over the summer. I'm a single parent and a nurse. I would usually put both of my primary aged children in holiday clubs over the summer but I cannot imagine for one minute that these will be open?

HavenDilemma · 23/05/2020 12:02

YANBU!!!!

bigchris · 23/05/2020 12:05

My dd is year 8

I got an email saying no school for her until September

The government haven't said what is happening in July yet

so sad she won't see her friends , I think they've jumped the gun

Sodamncold · 23/05/2020 12:12

@bigchris

What country?

bigchris · 23/05/2020 12:38

England Grin

bigchris · 23/05/2020 12:39

@Sodamncold

Sodamncold · 23/05/2020 12:52

Did the email say it was their own decision? Because nothing as yet from the gov re any years other than R, 1 and 6

bigchris · 23/05/2020 13:40

They said only years 10 and 12 are going back as per government guidance, except that could change before the end of term which is why I'm a bit fed up

Sodamncold · 23/05/2020 14:28

previous post you say * I got an email saying no school for her until September *

Last post you say * They said only years 10 and 12 are going back as per government guidance, except that could change before the end of term*

So I’m confused. Have they said your year 8 will not be back until September? Or have they advised the two years that are going back and that the situation may change before the end of term?

LittleBearPad · 23/05/2020 16:07

I thought it was only primary schools where they were thinking more years might go back pre-summer. (Except year 10 and 12 who might get some face to face teaching)

bigchris · 23/05/2020 22:52

Sorry to confuse

They have said only year 10 and 12 will go back

So years 7,8,9 they have decided they will not be returning to school this summer term , this is a state school not private
