to ask landlord to move out furniture?

If looking at renting a property, is it acceptable to ask LL to move out some of the furniture? I need to move asap and there isn't much being advertised for obvious reasons, so its looking like I'll have to rent a property that is already furnished.

I have furniture that I really don't want to sell (v naice bed/mattress and wardrobe that I splashed out on!) so will need to move it into new place if possible but worried it will put potential new landlord off me as a tenant.

Is this a normal request from renters? Would it annoy you?

Chances are if they're renting it out as furnished is that they will have nowhere to store the furniture whilst you are a tenant without it coming at additional cost to them for the duration of your tenancy. Not only that but obviously the practicalities of them being able to move it out during this time.

There is no harm in asking but be fully prepared for them saying no.

What is the price difference between the size house you need and one with an additional bedroom/ dining room?

It may be cheaper to rent a slightly larger house and store the unwanted furniture in the additional room rather than pay moving and storage costs for your own things.

We rent property out. One is part furnished, the other unfurnished.

My tenant was happy to pay for storage if the things i had in. Its only in a mates garage and im happy with that at £20 a month.

We have nowhere to store furniture. The house we let out is rented furnished. I would suggest you store your own furniture or pay for storage of the furniture you don't want.

No way would we pay.

Why do you think it's your tenant's responsibility to pay to store your stuff??

Methtones · 10/05/2020 11:58

CodenameVillanelle because the house was let as furnished?

because they chose to rent a FURNISHED property?

The landlord could have just said no full stop - they compromised.

MatildaTheCat · 10/05/2020 11:59

The answer is you need to ask. Some LL will move their stuff out because they have storage facilities and want their property to be let. Others won’t because storage is really expensive.

If you were offering a long term rental with a good deposit I would definitely consider it though it would be a pain.

YABU. If you want the furniture out you have to offer to pay for it to be stored.

Otherwise look for somewhere unfurnished.

Viviennemary · 10/05/2020 12:04

You should ask. Depends on the landlords circumstances. But if it's being let as fully furnished then I would say the landlord doesn't have any obligation to move furniture out.

Bargainhuntbore · 10/05/2020 12:24

@CodenameVillanelle obviously it had to be pointed out to you.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/05/2020 12:25

Ask the landlord. Some will, some won't. They usually choose how to let their property based on the kind of tenant they want / expect.

I've been involved in the argument between tenant who stored the landlords furniture in a garage having been specifically told not to. It isn't pleasant or quickly resolved - and neither side think they've been fairly treated.
