Can someone please explain why we are having 2 mothers days this year?

We celebrated on March 22nd so where has today come from?

I think it's americas mothers day today

Wfhwith3yearold · 10/05/2020 10:41

It's the American mothers day.

itsme · 10/05/2020 10:42

It's in Australia at this time of year.

SailorGirl3 · 10/05/2020 10:42

Today is Mother's Day is America and Australia. Probably a few other countries also

Perch · 10/05/2020 10:43

It is also mothers’ day in Aus, NZ and South Africa.

xyzandabc · 10/05/2020 10:43

Different countries celebrate it on different dates. Where have you seen this? Have you picked this up from another country?

I've not seen anything about a Mother's Day in the UK today.

LeekPeachPlum · 10/05/2020 10:44

Most of the world celebrate mother's day on the second Sunday in may. In the UK and a few other countries it is celebrated on the 4th Sunday in Lent. There is always two mother's days.

Rhynswynd · 10/05/2020 10:44

I'm in Australia enjoying mother's day. My son in the UK hasn't called yet.

Maybelatte · 10/05/2020 10:45

Other countries celebrate Mothers Day today.

MintyChapstick · 10/05/2020 10:46

The rest of the world celebrates Mother’s Day later than the UK. I thought everyone knew this?

Google would have been better than AIBU....

DM1209 · 10/05/2020 10:47

Thank you lovely people. I had a complete panic thinking I'd missed some new announcement or something and made a colossal cock up!

Phew.

In the UK we have Mothering Sunday, which is not quite the same thing as the Mothers Day celebrated in the USA and elsewhere.

Mothering Sunday is a religious holiday, always on the 4th Sunday in Lent. This year it was on the 22nd of March.

Mothers Day is a secular, made-up celebration, just like Fathers Day, Grandparents Day, Secretaries Day etc. Mothers Day is always the first Sunday in May.

sashh · 10/05/2020 10:51

We don't actually have a mother's day in the UK, we have 'Mothering Sunday' which has nothing to do with mothers but 'mother church'.

Lots of places have a mother's day in May, as already said the US, Austalia and New Zealand it is today, France is later in May and derives from, I think, the Greek mother of gods.

We also have world book day on a different date.
