To consider a sprung mattress over memory? Can you tell me your tips?

Hi my sister needs a new bed, super king or king

She's 5ft 3 and slim and her partner is 6ft and slim

She originally wanted a memory foam but for various reasons they think a hybrid? I have a memory foam matress and it's SO heavy.

There is far too much information out there and she's overwhelmed. There are a lot of sales on atm ending tomorrow, she wants to order today.

Any advice? Budget say £600 and under preferably as she needs to replace her bed frame too now that I said a double is too small for a baby

I have a spring and memory foam - amazing. Spring mattresses feel really weird now.

cultkid · 10/05/2020 09:02

@GingerRodgers18 what do you have? She thinks hybrid is the way forward and so do I
I regret the Tempur!

We have a combination mattress and it's heaven.

AnotherEmma · 10/05/2020 09:05

I have a pocket spring mattress and love it. If you get a good quality one with lots of springs it's comfortable. You could get a hybrid or just a spring mattress with a foam mattress topper if you want. But tbh the best thing is to test them out which is obviously tricky atm!

I have a pocket sprung mattress and it's perfect for me. I went to a huge mattress warehouse and the assistant suggested I tried out every single bed, then report back which ones I liked the best. I would recommend this way of choosing a mattress. I have tried memory foam on holiday but it was way to warm for me.

I have just gone back to spring after years on memory foam. I honestly don’t know why I did not do it sooner. It is so bloody lovely.

Clockworkprincess · 10/05/2020 09:12

We have a pocket sprung hybrid memory and love it. I do work in mattresses though and call memory marmite, you either love it or hate it, but have noticed there is a massive uptake in the hybrid even with people who weren't fans of memory as its a good combination

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/05/2020 09:15

I wouldn't buy a mattress without lying on it first, sorry! I don't like memory foam as it makes me feel hot and I like a cool room/bed. I have a very expensive spung mattress with natural fibres. It's gorgeous and weighs an absolute ton!

Squigglypig2 · 10/05/2020 09:15

We tried two diff memory foam mattresses (over years) and hated them both, spent £££ on a proper pocket sprung mattress we could flip over and it's heaven. Memory foam just ended up with dips in the matteess and sweating at night for us.

ilovetrees30 · 10/05/2020 09:17

Our mattress is a pocket sprung with memory topper and I love it. It is almost 8 years old and feels as good as it did when it was new.

Theonewiththecandles · 10/05/2020 10:53

I would say she is better off with a proper pocket sprung given their size differences with a memory foam bed they will just end up rolling together

edenhills · 10/05/2020 12:23

I find memory foam way too hot!

WaitedForGodot · 10/05/2020 12:42

Even if you don't buy from them, I found the John Ryan website very informative: johnryanbydesign.co.uk/

Bought their entry level mattress three years back now, very happy with it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 10/05/2020 13:03

Pocket sprung mattress and then a good memory foam topper, separate.

That way you can replace the topper. They always wear more quickly than the mattress.

We spent a couple of days trying mattresses. Ignore all the hard / soft stuff. You just want a mattress that comfortably bears your weight. Then you add the topper that suits you/your pocket

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 10/05/2020 21:24

I've just bought an Otty matress today, so I won't get for a couple of weeks, but I've heard alot of good things and like a few other mattresses you can try for 100 nights.

Crabbo · 10/05/2020 21:26

I wouldn’t get either - we have a latex one and I love it. Btw as you mentioned a baby, memory foam is not safe for babies.

HyggeTygge · 10/05/2020 21:40

I don't like memory foam. Get a really decent pocket sprung one like the John Lewis ones. Or, I got DS a single Ikea Hovag one and it's really lush. Granted I haven't slept a full night on it myself but worth giving it a try. Got great Which review iirc.

demolitionduo · 10/05/2020 21:43

I have an OTTY hybrid and it is a dream. The comfort of memory foam with a bit of bounce. Highly recommended.

Bathonian2020 · 10/05/2020 21:47

I had a lovely sprung mattress then the cat was accidentally shut in the room by DC and wee'd on it so I had to get a new mattress quickly.

I went for a very well known memory foam brand and its OK, but really not a patch on my old sprung mattress and it does get very hot. At some point I will save up and replace it with a sprung one.

123456abcd · 10/05/2020 21:50

Do not buy memory foam (in my opinion) -I regret decision I made 8 years ago.......sooooo hot!

Waveysnail · 10/05/2020 21:50

We sent memory foam one back - thinking was dreams and went for pocket spring with memory foam top.

Waveysnail · 10/05/2020 21:51

But would have preferred latex top

Spanglybangles · 10/05/2020 21:58

We have pocket sprung with a geltex pillow top and its amazing. Very heavy so a pain to rotate, but worth it. Previous memory foam was awful and we got rid of it less than a year later.

Clarabel22 · 10/05/2020 22:11

I have a Simba and it is perfect. I have had pure latex in the past (nice but dips over time and because it is a natural substance the firmness cannot be guaranteed) an Ikea memory foam mattress(too firm) and a Vispring (my husband found this too firm). The Simba has been perfect and now everyone in the family has one. They do get warm though and this was a problem for my teenage son who was getting quite sweaty. We resolved this by getting a wool mattress topper (more expense I know) which stopped the overheating.

AJPTaylor · 10/05/2020 22:26

We have a sprung mattress that was too firm. The addition of an egg box foam mattress topper and it's heaven.
