Blackbirds ruining our life

Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration there, but really.
We've lived in this house for 3 years now, and blackbirds nest in the roof.
All. Year. Round.
Their gap seems to be directly above our bedroom window, meaning we can hear them all night scratching and moving about

In the morning, if we open the bedroom window they find this makes a useful perch for them to access their nest.

THEY ARE SO NOISY!

One nest a year wouldn't be an issue, but blackbirds dont ever leave their nests. The female and the offspring do, but the Male stays until he finds a new female. Then it starts all over again.

Is there any way we can get rid of them?

Our cat has brought 5 in in the past year and a bit, they still think it's a safe place to nest.

I know you cant move birds nests but are there any exceptions to this?! I'd love to have our bedroom window open this summer...

That's a starling, they use the same nesting area every year. Let them finish this year and simply block the hole.

Callimanco · 10/05/2020 09:20

We also have jackdaws in our roof. I love hearing the babies in late Spring - though to be fair it's not my bedroom they are in, but they don't seem to stop my teen boy sleeping since he's rarely up by lunchtime these days...Hmm

onesmalldog · 10/05/2020 09:21

There is an ongoing argument between a female blackbird and our cat! Literally. The built their nest in a tree close to our house so whenever the cat goes out she is too close so mummy bird comes out and starts on!

The other day our cat was answering back and in the end the riled her that much she stomped off back inside. It was hilarious.

But back to your point - yes I've heard how loud they can be I can see it must be stressful.

We genuinely couldn't sleep without a window open we would back to death the house really stores heat upstairs.

I love blackbirds but yes OP sorry I can't help I hope you sort it!

notsodimwit · 10/05/2020 09:22

Not sure if this will help you with blackbirds but we have housemartans come each year, they make such a mess on the windows building clay nests above windows etc. So I tape clear plastic bags outside windows to blow in wind and it discourages them Smile

Remembered I rescued one from the cats last year! Heres a good pic

‘Most people would love to have birds around’
Would they, aye? Keeping you awake, making never ending noise, you would love that??

Soubriquet · 10/05/2020 09:25

We currently have sparrows nesting just over the dc’s window

Our kitchen window has a lot of bird poop on it and dd says she can hear peeping from the chicks

I’ll never forget when I was growing up, we had house martins.

They would return every year and would be a pest if chicks were in the nest as they would dive bomb you even if you were in the back garden. (Their nest was at the front of the house)

One year, my dad was fed up with it. He waited for the babies to fledge (which shocked me as he is one of those who wouldn’t care) and then went and knocked the nest down. Problem was, babies had gone, parents hadn’t.

They dive bombed him mercilessly whilst he was attacking the nest.

I was gutted to see them gone

Fourandtwentyblackbirdsinmypie · 10/05/2020 09:25

Theres a gap out of sight in the first picture that they use, but theres another gap above that they use too. Dont know much about the house structurally, this is a rental

Its a starling.
I absolutely adore starlings and you don't see as many around any more. There's a huge decline in numbers as roosting trees have been destroyed.
They are known for being loud, and demanding birds. Alot of bird watchers didn't like them coming into gardens in the past, due to the fact they'll come in droves and decimate the feed you put down, so bluetits, Robin etc loose out.

However none of this info helps Op, wait until fledged and then block up hole.

Sadly another nesting site lost, but if its impacting your quality of life then something has to be done!

Prehaps you can put a bird box up in your garden to make up for it? Smile

Originalyellowbelly · 10/05/2020 09:26

Our neighbours have a huge conifer in their garden, it's full of nesting pigeons. They start with their stupid noise before the crack of dawn which wakes my cats which then wakes me, they crap all over the place, including on me as I sat in the garden and worst of all they are shagging non stop on the fence, usually in threesomes. Disgusting!

dementedma · 10/05/2020 09:26

Really laughed at the baby bats. We have starlings nesting in our roof. We did block the hole one year with foamy type stuff but they came back and pecked it all out. Will try with something else once this lot have fledged.

Blackbird adult male has a bright yellow beak and fantastic song.

Isawamagpie · 10/05/2020 09:28

ps. If rented this is really a landlord/pest control issue.

Fourandtwentyblackbirdsinmypie · 10/05/2020 09:28

If I put a bird box in the garden the cats would think I'd made them a packed lunch 😂

I used to have starlings wearing hob nailed boots in my attic so I got the entry hole blocked up one winter. A starling flew out when the roofer was sorting it out.

Blackbirds usually nest in hedges and fly low across roads in front of cars.

Xiddling · 10/05/2020 09:30

It's not a starling, it's a blackbird. The ring around the eye makes it clear.

Doilooklikeatourist · 10/05/2020 09:30

Yes @Electrical , we do like having the birds around
We have swallows nesting by our bedroom window , they are messy , the birdsong is beautiful though and we love to watch them flying around in the evening , their chicks are so cute , we can watch them grow
We watched them seeing off a blackbird this morning
@Fourandtwentyblackbirdsinmypie
I’m no expert , but i think that’s a starling , although I thought they nested as a flock ( same area , different nests )

Bathroom12345 · 10/05/2020 09:30

We had glis glis in our old house. Honestly they were very very noisy and can only be removed by a specialist. Every evening just after you turned off the light they would start.....

ShinyS1 · 10/05/2020 09:31

Pretty sure that's a starling. We had them nest in our roof space for years, I felt too guilty to do anything about it for a long time, but they had two broods a year and made the most horrendous mess. Our patio, windows and plants were covered with bird shit!

I could see the nest when I went in the loft, it was about a metre across, obviously been there for a very long time! In the end we waited until the babies had fledged and then sealed the hole with expandable foam.

megletthesecond · 10/05/2020 09:32

It looks like a mole from that angle 😂.

Does the adult male have a yellow beak?

NailsNeedDoing · 10/05/2020 09:35

Can’t you put a bell on your cat or something as you know it attacks birds?

Topseyt · 10/05/2020 09:36

Not that I'm a great bird expert, though I do like watching their antics out in the garden, but we have had the odd problem with them either falling into the living room down the chimney (which is now capped to stop that), and with wood pigeons who insistently stuffed their nest in behind our satellite dish and caused problems.

You do just have to try and block things off to them, or put up bird scarers in strategic placed. You can get ones in the shape of birds of prey which might be somewhat effective. We have one in the shape of an owl that is shiny, metallic and is clipped onto a downpipe near said satellite dish. So far this year it has worked and they have now decamped to the nearby silver birch tree.

Nottherealslimshady · 10/05/2020 09:36

I'd leave them. But if you do anything ONLY do it while there are no females or chicks. Make sure there are no birds inside and close the gap.
