To not ‘pay my way’?

LeLavandou · 10/05/2020 08:29

By not paying for Mumsnet Premium and using an ad blocker. Is that ‘not paying my way’ as Justine Roberts suggested on the MN premium thread in Site Stuff?
Does this make me a freeloader, if I still use MN and just block the ads? Given I only use the talk boards where content is produced by users, where does this stand in the MN freeloader stakes?

I fail to see why you aren't just quietly using ad-block ... No-one at MNHQ would ever know.

Premium for fewer adverts isn't worth it IMHO.

00100001 · 10/05/2020 08:34

..mih and that they might look into maybe getting some possible additional features.

Maybe when those features appear and work properly, then premium might be worth considering.

LeLavandou · 10/05/2020 08:35

I wondered what others thought. Surely most people use ad-block these days anyway?

Kerlassic · 10/05/2020 08:35

MN are deluded. It’s like they don’t realise we are the content. We are the product. I love a bit of MN but I’m not paying.

Treacletoots · 10/05/2020 08:39

I know how much Mumsnet charges its advertisers for something as trivial as a sponsored blog (c 20k) It's eye wateringly expensive. If they're struggling to make ends meet then they need to have a hard look at how they're operating /look to provide value added content or service people would be happy to pay for..

Second a PP. We ARE your content, your value, without the users MN wouldn't exist.

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2020 08:53

We add the content, but the product?. How on earth do you think mumsnet would survive without advertising content if the “product” doesn’t contribute financially? Do you think the website should just have been set up for our amusement and paid out of Justine’s pocket?

Spiffingly · 10/05/2020 08:54

I use an add blocker. I installed it because another site I use is unbearable without it.

Do MNHQ want us to uninstall it each time we log on!?

I also won't be paying, I 'pay my way' by posting.

LeLavandou · 10/05/2020 08:56

No @Mummyoflittledragon, of course not. Equally, I don’t think I should have to bail Justine out because of her financial mismanagement.

OP posts:
SachaStark · 10/05/2020 08:59

Nope, no way I’m paying.

Like you say, we, the users, create the content on the forums. Does anybody actually READ the website/guest blogs? Maybe they should save themselves money by not paying guest bloggers. Who blogs anymore, anyway? It’s 2020, not 2012.

Besides the issue of what we’re paying FOR, regardless, I certainly wouldn’t support MNHQ by paying until they make some adjustments to the “spirit of Mumsnet” by actually tackling the hundreds of teacher-bashing threads to show their support for the country’s educators.

Ellisandra · 10/05/2020 09:00

I don’t use an ad blocker as I don’t find that they massively get in the way of the sites I use - I’m quite good at scrolling on by!
I had vaguely been aware of the premium service but not the detail, then I saw that premium was reduced ads, not add-free. I wouldn’t pay to still have ads!

Wankerchief · 10/05/2020 09:01

£50 for us to use a poorly moderated space that we fill with content that the advertisers want to advertise on and again pay mumsnet for...

I honestly think if they are struggling then theres mismanagement on a rather large scale

Pinkyyy · 10/05/2020 09:01

The ads really don't bother me, I've never clicked one though.

Mucklowe · 10/05/2020 09:02

They should get rid of everything except the forums. I once went to the MN homepage by mistake and was like WTF is this! Useless. No need for bloggers, as a PP said.

MaybeDoctor · 10/05/2020 09:02

I think there was a window of time when users would have been happy to pay a subscription for forum services, but I think that time has now passed. There are many, many places where people can get free online content and support - especially now that Facebook groups have taken off.

I think Mumsnet is great, but this is just how I read the current landscape.

00100001 · 10/05/2020 09:03

@Spiffingly you don't need to un install it each time, you can add sites as exceptions

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2020 09:04

Justine out because of her financial mismanagement

I think that’s harsh and not correct, lots of businesses are struggling during this lock down, is been nearly two months and the first cut backs many companies have made is in discretionary advertising. For many this is a black swan event and very few businesses can afford to loose up to a years revenue, which is likely what’s going to happen.

In addition no one is forcing you to bail mumsent out, or Justine. Or even to use the site. You’re still here posting aren’t you?

Ultimately though I agree the premium feature was not well thought through, because it was sold as a service, which had pretty much no additional features currently available. So no premium service as such to be sold.

I hope the advertising revenue picks up when this is over, and sooner rather than later, and everything is ok, but I’d guess the site would be sold rather than let it go bust.

If it was my site, and I felt there was a risk of it folding, I’d be in discussions to sell it, with potentially me holding on to an executive position.

Gawdsake2020 · 10/05/2020 09:04

I don’t think anyone in their right mind has paid for premium. Such a waste of money.

MamaGothel · 10/05/2020 09:07

I've never used Ad-blocker. I just ignore ads for the most part, but it seems fair enough to me that sites need to have ads to keep going. I won't be paying for premium.

GreyGardens88 · 10/05/2020 09:13

I use ad-blocker but more and more sites are blocking the ad-blocker (Daily Mail online) so you're forced to either disable the ad-blocker or leave the site

Spiffingly · 10/05/2020 09:13

@00100001 I guess I could do that, but it would be a waste of time. I have never once clicked an advert. And the more intrusive an ad is, the more I vow to not use that particular brand.

I have also never use the other areas of mumsnet. If I want the opinion of mumsnetters, I'll google the subject followed by the word 'mumsnet'. I don't think a panel of biased (possibly fake?) reviews on the 'mumsnet trusts' section really represent a real world view.

And to be honest, I'm not rich, so seeing a bunch of travel systems that cost 3x my wage wont help me.

Schoenes · 10/05/2020 09:18

Pay for what?

LeLavandou · 10/05/2020 09:18

@Bluntness100, I know no one is forcing me to bail Justine out and that I’m still using the site Hmm I just wanted other people’s views. What with it being a chat forum and all. But thanks for pointing out the obvious, very helpful.

In terms of financial mismanagement it may be harsh, but actually is probably verging on correct.

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 10/05/2020 09:21

I'd be interested to know how many people have paid for it. To be honest I think it's cheeky to ask people to pay for it when they e admitted it's not ready yet. How can you ask people to pay for something that doesn't yet exist?

EmbarrassedUser · 10/05/2020 09:24

I wouldn’t pay. If we all flounce off on a huff there will be no MN anyway so I’m sticking with being a freebie member thanks.

Spiffingly · 10/05/2020 09:26

I can't see the thread in site stuff about this....I'm on the app, can anyone link me to it please??
