Drunken VE day celebrations - why no bad press?

I'd like to think, on a whole, most VE day celebrations were 'sensible' and adhered to social distancing measures. But I'm very much aware this was not the case in many areas (like mine - drunken shouting, loud music into the night, etc.)

I may be missing the obvious, so please do point it out, but why does there not seem to be any bad press on this? Not even in local papers? I've seen plenty of photographic evidence on FB groups with people slamming the revellers.

The papers usually seem to feast on anything to do with CV/people breaking rules and the like. Why not this time?

Well perhaps because, by your own words, on a whole most VE day celebrations were 'sensible' and adhered to social distancing measures.

Because it wouldn't fit with all the slightly nauseous media rhetoric about the plucky Brits and their Blitz spirit remembering their glory days and being all in it together while we defeat the nasty virus just like we saw off the Nazis donchaknow?

ParkheadParadise · 09/05/2020 19:34

I don't know anyone who had a VE day party or celebrated in anyway.

lesbihonest · 09/05/2020 19:39

Parkhead thank you ! I was beginning to wonder if we were alone, we talked a lot about relatives who died in WW2 (lots of family are in the forces back then and still today) but didn’t celebrate anything ! I don’t know anyone who did - the thought of a street party horrifies ... maybe it’s a Scottish thing (I’m NE Scotland) .

The press and the media have been given a ‘voice’ that is designed to suit the owner of the paper or the agenda of the broadcaster.
There are few genuinely independent media voices.
In recent days the media has been cock-a-hoop over perceived relaxing of lockdown rules. The consensus seems to be that the Government has leaked its Sunday report in order to see what people thought.

feelingverylazytoday · 09/05/2020 19:46

How does drunken shouting and loud music break social distancing measures?
They might be annoying and antisocial, but social distancing refers to the distance between people (obviously), not the volume of the music or how drunk they are.

FTMF30 · 09/05/2020 19:57

@feelingverylazytoday I neglected to mention it was multiple households all grouping together, football chanting and playing loud music out of onr of my neighbours speakers. I saw my neighbours in a whole different light last night. It started with cute little tables or chairs set up on peoples drives then desended into madness. I was pretry shocked.

@lesbihonest
Only time we party in the street is Hogmanay.
🤣🤣🤣🤣

FTMF30 · 09/05/2020 20:03

@1Morewineplease I sadly agree. It's like some of the careless behaviour was insidiously encouraged. Although, on the one hand, I understand people are adults and can make their own choices, I was pretty naively surprised there's been no hint of negative press about it.

What really irks is the irony of the fact that so many who survived the war have since died in care homes due to the virus, yet so many felt that a bit of a knees up was appropriate, during a pandemic lockdown.
There will be a time to celebrate... now is not the time.

FTMF30 · 09/05/2020 20:37

I agree. Remembrance is one thing but some of the behaviour of my neighbours was disappointing. Nothing to do with VE day at all. Oh, sorry, i forgot they hung some bunting 🙃.

I actually thought I had missed an announcement saying lockdown was over when I walked home yesterday. Massive party on part of my estate.
Ended up with police here in the end. But yes really loud music until gone 23:00.
I went on Facebook when I was home asking my friends if lockdown was over because it totally looked like it and being by my own I just want it to be over so much so I can see everyone again.

PinkBuffalo · 09/05/2020 20:43

There was no social distancing whatsoever at the party I walked past yesterday!but then these particular group do not seem to pay any attention to it anyway...

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 09/05/2020 20:45

I don't know anyone that had parties. I'm in Scotland too. Street parties aren't really a thing here.

FTMF30 · 09/05/2020 20:53

Lucky for those who live in Scotland. There seemed to be so much stupidity in England yesterday.

There was quite a bit of press about the London Bridge clappers, yet silence about this. It's a good example of reasoning not to trust the narrative of the press.
