To take a curtain out of the skip up the road? It’s on someone’s drive but right on the edge so I wouldn’t have to walk up their drive to get it. It’s exactly the right colour for a piece of embroidery I’m working on. Normally I would knock on the door and ask but it seems daft to be knocking on a strangers door at the moment. Would it be super cheeky.

Technically it's illegal, but I honestly can't see the problem, especially at the moment when it would be wrong to go and ask them.

SoupDragon · 08/05/2020 20:48

Knock on the door, stand well back and ask.

I can't see it being a problem really but you sold make an attempt to ask.

Standupthisisnotateaparty · 08/05/2020 20:51

Of course you should ask. It’s not yours. Iv put things on a skip and then changed my mind. It’s very entitled to think you can just take what you want.

Pinkyyy · 08/05/2020 20:58

Just knock on the door and stay 2m away.

Hadjab · 08/05/2020 21:00

I would consider anything I’ve put in a skip to be fair game, but I guess it’s polite to ask

RegentsParkWolf · 09/05/2020 23:23

Taking things out of a skip = entitled. Love it. 😂

I don't think people even realise that they use the term "entitled" in the wrong way OP.

I'll go ahead and tell you that in my opinion you're entitled to take some rubbish out of a skip, it would be nice to ask and I'm sure they will say yes.

Some people here have a sense of entitlement which makes them think they can stick their noses in other people's business.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 10/05/2020 00:06

Its illegal to take out of a skip without permission as its theft. I learned this on a cop show when a man was made to return the things to the skip until he got permission off the person who put it there. Although i think its silly and personally think skip items are fair game to take but legally its not.

Vedaisawesome · 10/05/2020 01:07

It's illegal to take items from a skip. It's even more illegal to enter onto someone's property to take items from a skip. The skip is on a private drive. You're trespassing even if you put one foot on the drive or one hand over the boundary to get to the skip. Just knock and ask. I had a scrap merchant knock yesterday to ask to take something from my skip on my drive. Perfectly acceptable as he stood well back.

MintyMabel · 10/05/2020 01:19

Taking things out of a skip = entitled. Love it.

Taking something from someone's property = not entitled. Bizarre.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2020 08:47

Except you are not entitled to just take something out of a skip. As others have said, it's illegal and it's not just "nice" to ask, you actually have to.

PikachuAndMe · 10/05/2020 11:17

Knock at door, stand well back, ask if you can take the curtains.

Or

Take the curtains and leave a note.

Isawamagpie · 10/05/2020 11:25

Ohhh.. i never thought of the legality of skip diving.
I love seeing skips and taking items Blush
However I have seen a few skips but haven't been feeling right to take anything (or look) since lockdown due to the virus.. am I being daft? My mum is in the camp of disinfecting her shopping when she gets it, so I'm thinking taking items out of a skip isn't the safest thing to do right now?
Honestly, I would have just taken the curtains.

If it makes you feel better I would knock and stand really far back? I wouldn't mind if someone knocked to ask a question and kept distance.
