Pregnancy after c section

Posting here for traffic ...

I know they recommend waiting 12 months to get pregnant again after a section.

Has anyone gotten pregnant quite soon after having a section? Say within the first few months?

The waiting period is there for a reason. it enables the woomb and all connective tissue etc to heal. If you get pregnant too soon, the scar could burst when you are in labour because of the contractions and you or the baby could die. Or both. So why risk it.

Dr advised me to wait a year after pregnancy at all, as the body needs a break. But I asked (as I don't want to go back on contraception immediately) if it was normally OK if pregnancy did happen soon after. It is, but not recommended.

I got pregnant again around 11 months after. As far as I'm aware no complications as second birth (also c section, planned) was smooth

I had a C-section with my first and no-one ever warned us against getting pregnant soon after. First baby took ages to conceive and we were on the verge of having IVF when I got pregnant. We didn't want to leave it ages to try for a second in case it took ages again but actually got lucky first time . Second baby was then born 6 weeks premature so ended up with just 18 months between them. I don't know if getting pregnant too soon was a factor in going into early labour In hindsight it was too soon, I had only stopped breastfeeding DS1about six weeks before giving birth to ds2 and was working all hours during a heatwave. Ds2 was born too early and was in scbu and intensive care for a while, they thought he has cystic fibrosis which fortunately turned out not to be the case. I should add I had a natural vaginal delivery with ds and then 2 subsequent babies so three vbac's following a C-section.

I got pregnant three months after first section (yes I know) it was an accident. I had another section booked, during the second section was discovered my scar was completely open dehiscence of the wound my baby was hanging out. It was quite traumatic senior surgeon was rushed in to take a look it was hairy but my DD was born healthy. I was quite shaken up it took a long time to repair me. Was told in no uncertain terms not to get pregnant within a year(i waited seven years for my third) just to make sure. I think my scar was weak.as I had a terrible first pregnancy severe preeclampsia dangerous haemorrhage my body was wrecked then I got pregnant there months later... We were very lucky.

I got pregnant around 3 months after my first c section , I had the second by elective C section but mainly because I grow big babies, they said had he been smaller they would have let me try for a VBAC. X

MrsBtobe1208 · 08/05/2020 17:05

Thankyou!

My baby is 5 weeks old so not trying but can't get hold of any contraception at the moment so just wondering incase we sleep do together and I ended up pregnant.

Completely different this time round as I had vaginal birth with my first but this time round I feel like I'm "normal" quicker even though obviously inside won't be yet.

Ive heard of people being told to wait 6 months if they're older and don't have a lot of fertile years left but also heard of people being told to wait 18 months if younger. So I think as long as possible, usually about a year is ideal.

MotherWol · 08/05/2020 17:16

You can buy condoms online if you can’t get to the shops. You’ve got a five week old, there’s a strong chance you can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex. It’s really not a good idea!

Dreamingofkfc · 08/05/2020 17:16

Surely you can get some condoms?

SandyY2K · 08/05/2020 17:17

I always thought the waiting time was longer than what has been said here.

You need the scar to heal before it gets cut again....just think logically.

Most medical experts recommend waiting anywhere from 6-15 months after having a C-section before getting pregnant again (or 15-24 months between births) to reduce the risk of complications like uterine rupture.

LGY1 · 08/05/2020 17:20

I’m pregnant with my second (33 weeks now) and my first is nearly 3.
All I can say is the weight definitely pulls on my scar! Things like walking downhill do hurt.
I think it’s best to take it easy and try not to get pregnant. It can be quite painful at times!

loutypips · 08/05/2020 17:30

Got accidentally pregnant when dd was 16w (of course it was the one and only time we did it after the baby!). Ended up nearly dying due to an ectopic pregnancy. Didn't even realise I was pregnant again as my periods were up the creek and had no symptoms.

MrsPear · 08/05/2020 17:31

Loads of online chemists like Lloyd’s Superdrug etc will prescribed them pill online without the need for doctors. There is no need to be daft

MrsBtobe1208 · 08/05/2020 17:55

@MrsPear I didn't know that. Thankyou

V interesting to hear.. will def wait a year then. Or i guess can check with docs to see how scar is going before trying?

CatFaceCats · 08/05/2020 18:24

I did - I fell pregnant 3 months after a section (pill failure)
So my children are a year and 5 days apart.
My pregnancy was completely fine. No complications. I opted for an elective section for the second, although I was given the option of a VBAC, the consultant said it would be in a much more controlled environment just incase.
Everything has healed up as it should.
But, 2 under was an absolute nightmare so buy some condoms from amazon!

MrsBtobe1208 · 08/05/2020 19:25

@CatFaceCats Thankyou!

When the doctor was discharging me after I had dd1 she said see you next year 😳 I was like no way and she was your young you'll be fine . Dd2 arrived when dd1 was 18 months old.

Pipandmum · 08/05/2020 23:11

Yes I was pregnant within the year. I don't recall ever being told to wait.
My cousin got pregnant three months after her section, and went on to have a third section. No issues.

ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie · 08/05/2020 23:39

My consultant said ideally wait 2 years before getting pregnant again. If not, to have 2 years between births. He said that the nhs guidelines were less time but in his experience, that is the best time for the body to heal completely if you’re in no rush to conceive again due to age or fertility issues.

Overcomplicated · 08/05/2020 23:48

I (accidentally) fell 4 months after emergency section of twins. VBAC exactly 13 months to the day. Wouldn't recommend it but I've had another 2 since and had elective sections as scar tissue is not strong. I'd wait
