Can I have x for free?

I understand that times are tough, and it’s up to the individual who responds to have said yes. However, is it just me or are people getting more extravagant in what they might reasonable expect someone to gift ‘for free!’

I have just spotted in a group that someone is wondering if anyone can ‘gift’ them 100 block paving slabs for their drive. Maybe it’s just me but that seems like a lot to feel you can just commandeer.

What is the most expensive thing you have seen people try and blag that has made you think: ‘really?!’ Or is it just me being grumpy.

Not as cheeky as ‘could I have everything for an x bedroom house, delivery only, no time wasters please.’

People are mad.

itsnotcakeitsbaby · 08/05/2020 12:38

@Oakmaiden Foot fetishist I reckon! Grin

God, what sort of a boorish arsehole thinks "I'll take it off your hands" is a suitable response to the offer of free goods?

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/05/2020 12:42

I've seen requests for a TV for kids room...and then when an old style one is offered, the person says no, it has to be a flat one.

In fairness an old CRT is literally no use for anything anymore really.

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/05/2020 12:42

This is why my stuff goes straight to the charity shop; I don't have to get annoyed at the ridiculous chancers out there.

It's worth the hassle of having to transport it there myself 😆

firstmentat · 08/05/2020 12:43

@MitziK
I am pretty sure your ex is my ex as I recognise the ex-SIL description. She also takes her own tea bags to the cafe when you go out for a coffee and says "I will only have hot tap water thanks", right?

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/05/2020 12:44

Well, it's not literally no use... How could it be?
If you want cutting edge, go to the John Lewis website. Sadly, that isn't free.

Naillig222 · 08/05/2020 12:47

Not CF but my brother gave away his old couch to an older couple and they later text him a photo of them sitting on the couch smiling. It was very sweet.

yearinyearout · 08/05/2020 12:47

Oh there's a fb group locally that started as a page for people gifting/recycling their unwanted things, now it's full of people trying to blag an entire house full of furniture rather than buy it!
So tempted to comment "try Argos"

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/05/2020 12:48

Ah, that's lovely Smile

"In desperate need of a washing machine"

Someone offers one in working condition.

"Got a pic?"

I think you know what a washing machine looks like sunshine.

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/05/2020 12:50

You just know the "pic" will immediately feature in their eBay listing 😊

sashh · 08/05/2020 12:53

The ones that amuse me are the ones that 'comand' you give them seomething, the ,"I will collect at 6.00pm, send address now"

I've been greatful for freecycle and I try to re recycle eg I recieved a fridge, I already had a freezer but when I got some money to get a new fridge freezer the old frifge went back onto free cycle and the freezer to a friend.

A futon went to a work colleague who insisted I had something for it, so I got a bottle of wine.

I'v also (in the past, I'm not up to date with benefits now) advsed people who are in the 'I've just got a council flat and I have nothing' about budgeting loans and grants.

mondaypolomint · 08/05/2020 12:56

I've seen people directing these chancers to selling pages or telling them to do what everybody else does and buy.

I gave my sister in law some clothes of mine including a few cashmere cardigans, it's up to her what she did with them but I was a bit put out to find that she'd given a cashmere cardigan (of mine) to her mum as a Xmas present and pretended that she'd bought it for her.

I think we can conclude that CF's are two a penny;!

userabcname · 08/05/2020 13:01

My favourite example of this was posted on Facebook by (distant) relatives of mine. First message was roughly "we have booked a concert in the next city and need to be there at X time. We need someone to collect us from our house at X time and take us there. Up to you what you do while we are at the concert but we need to be picked up when it finishes and taken home. We can chip in for a bit of petrol money!" To add, this next city is over an hour away from where they live! A couple of days later a new message popped up: "Very disappointed no one has offered us a lift to X. At this rate we won't be able to go and the concert tickets were expensive!" Um, how is that anyone else's problem?! Surely you factor in how you're going to get there when you book an event?! Not just book it and then hope someone responds to a Facebook status!

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/05/2020 13:02

It is literally no use.
There is nothing you can buy now that will give you a picture on a CRT tv. So yes, literally.

Greenlorry · 08/05/2020 13:03

I don’t think people should request things in particular it adds so much pressure in work places and children’s parties too.
I feel like it’s the only reason people invite you is for the gift. It’s overwhelming and bad manners.

Justaboy · 08/05/2020 13:03

Do that great care if your playing around with any old CRT's they have an implosion risk!

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/05/2020 13:04

Never take a CRT apart. They can still carry a charge strong enough to kill you.

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/05/2020 13:09

Ok, Flamingo. I was assuming the poster had the relevant parts to make it actually workable. Admittedly strange if not!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 08/05/2020 13:11

I remember we used to take the old tube TV’s apart to get the massive magnets out of them. They were brilliant.

VerticalHorizon · 08/05/2020 13:12

These are not all CF's chancing their arm (though some may me).
Believe it or not, their are still some quite desperate families, or individuals in this country who have to swallow their pride and beg for other people's cast offs.

Yes, I do think there is probably a big increase in social media requests for help from community groups or churches, schools etc etc, but have a heart for those that really do need it.

RainMustFall · 08/05/2020 13:13

Are you talking about your Next Door local group OP? I've seen similar on the one in this area - one guy wants soil - (no mortar or bricks in the soil) and he expects it to be delivered. He reckons he's doing a favour delivering to him instead of the tip. Another one has a huge pile of rubble and is asking if anyone has a skip he could load it into and someone else wants a pile of newspapers and magazines for free AND delivered.
