Our government has dealt with the Coronacrisis so badly.

Did we even need to lockdown?

Newsnight suggests that it wasn't necessary.

Perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad had the lockdown been managed well. But now millions of people in this country will have their lives ruined. Millions will lose their lives as a result of this mismanaged lockdown.

We are coming out of this now with more mixed messages and confusion. People are taking it upon themselves to decide to end lockdown - as the government, once again, fails to take the lead.

I feels afraid and scared to live here. I don't trust that our government will ever know what they are doing or be able to protect us.

Yes as of today. Who says that in a year's time, the UK will have got read of it and NZ will be battling it because of lack of herd immunity

This is what I’m wondering. As Chris Whitty says, this is a very early stage of the pandemic. Those who have low death rates now may not be able to sustain them without continual lockdowns which will cause significant numbers of other deaths.

I think it is too soon to tell what the right strategy was in terms of strict locking down vs keeping the spread low enough to prevent overwhelming the NHS. I guess it depends if and how soon there is a treatment or vaccine.

I don’t think the govt has done a good job - mixed messages, PPE etc - but I think it is facile to say we can assess what was the best long term strategy at this stage.

Sweden insist lockdown only delays the inevitable and is a costly waste of time. I’m not an epidemiologist so I’ve no idea, but I’m keeping an open mind.

So OP if you fell and broke your leg you wouldn't get to hospital as the NHS treatment is non existent unless you have covid? I remember just recently the health officials telling people that the NHS is open as usual. Worried at the lack of intake. Some standard appointments may be cancelled and cancer treatment for the high risk postponed but this is only to protect people. My MIL was given a private driver to collect and take her to her recent eye appointment and she was also given a lovely food hamper by the NHS. Over 70 at risk but certainly looked after. You obviously don't support the Torys. Could labour do a better job? I highly doubt it. Next you'll be saying that covid is the Torys way of solving the social care crisis & the reason why you stubbed your toe last week. The message is clear stay and home, save lives. I actually think it was Sir Keir who started banging on about an exit strategy as soon as he got voted in. Now people are relaxing the rules off their own backs and the second wave will come. I know who I will blame then and it won't be the Torys.

They've got you. That's what they're aiming for!

Mixed messaging. Leaked signals to the press suggesting that lockdown was about to end. And hey presto everyone is out bringing in a second wave.

Where was the clear messaging and leadership? We can't blame the government for the second wave though can we? No. It must be the people's fault.

It was the government that kept saying stick to the rules. Stay Home. Protect the NHS. Is that a mixed signal? No! It's the reporters and opposition that keep banging on about having an exit strategy. Trying to run before they could walk. Lockdown will end when it ends, I have children I am desperate to get back to school, I'm worried about income but I would rather lockdown for another 3 weeks to be safe than risk a second wave. If it comes, No ones got me, why does everyone think it's always a game. Also people that are breaking the rules are to blame for the spread. We are all responsible for our own actions we cannot blame the government for everything in life.

bridgetreilly · 08/05/2020 23:26

Of course there will be a second wave. I don't understand why anyone ever thought there wouldn't be. And I fully expect that in a month or two we'll need to go back to tighter lockdown for a bit. And so on, maybe for six months or a year. The virus isn't containable. Nowhere has succeeded in containing it, except in islands that have been able to completely cut off all entry points - but that is only a temporary solution.

What you can do is what we have done, which is to slow the spread to a manageable level. Every time the social restrictions are eased we should expect it to spread more for a while, until eventually we get to a point of sufficient herd immunity to slow the spread effectively at a normal level of social interaction.

LuxLuxLux84 · 08/05/2020 23:34

We’ve got to get them out.

Graphista · 09/05/2020 15:05

We're an island! We COULD have done this but our govt didn't bother

Herd immunity not possible with this virus

I would be interested to know what people think of what this gentleman has to say with regard to the use of Hydroxychloroquine:
