to expect correct spellings from adults teaching my 4 yr old in reception?

I am by no means the best speller in the world, but my dd age 4.6 came home from reception class on friday with a picture she had drawn and an adult had written "I like fairys" underneath it.
I doubted myself and checked the dictionary but it should definately be "fairies".
I do not know if the adult concerned was the teacher or teaching assistant but I feel quite worried about this. What, if anything would you do?

It was my generation whose spelling was ignored in favour of content. Luckily my mother had a bash at teaching me to spell I still can't spell the green floral vegetable though!

My dd's year 2 teacher helped her spell Cheltenham (where granny lives) CHELTNUM!!!
Why not just look it up on a map rather than teaching a 7 year old the incorrect way to spell?
At first dh and I laughed, but since I have become concerned.

The Cheltnum thing may because they were doing phonetic spelling - did your dd sound it out. I would help my Year 1s to spell like that becayse they are hearing the sounds and practising using their phonetic knowledge.

The reason we knew she did it is that the teacher wrote it in pencil on the bottom of the page. I asked dd who wrote it and she said her teacher!!

Spellings and grammatical errors regularly come home from dd1's school too. Her new Yr4 teacher can't even spell her surname right (a fairly usual Scottish one) and it has come home printed wrong on her homework folder!! I have just corrected it and said nothing (dd commented too). A few spelling errors were in the class newsletter as well -I'm just resigned to the general crapness!!

The standard of spelling in dd2's newsletters (a SLD special school where most children are miles away from reading) is bizarrely much higher!

Being one myself, I feel that a Primary School teacher should spell correctly. However, there are times when we do make mistakes- a human trait. In a busy Reception classroom, at the beginning of the school year, there could be any number of 'helpers' working with the children. The classteacher cannot possibly check everything that they do, or it would defeat the object of having them there to help! Saying this, if I was a teacher that consistently made spelling errors on children's work, I would expect to be 'pulled up on it' by parents. I would then accept this criticism graciously and apologise. I'd never dream of taking it out on the child! Sorry, but had to get that off my chest.

I'm sure this thread has ended (probably through fear of anyone making a spelling mistake in their message)but felt I make a comment as I am also a primary school teacher. I agree with Bop re checking helpers work etc. but I would like to think that a parent could come to me to point out an error... I am sure I would apologise & laugh it off under a barrage of excuses but I'd make damned sure I didn't make the same mistake again and I'd check all displays in my classroom.

It is unreasonable to expect teachers to know more than parents but they / we should certainly have the basics nailed down.

I expect all the teachers who teach my children to spell correctly. And they do. Even the polish teaching assistant can spell words correctly.
With respect to hand written words: I expect teachers to check a dictionary if they are in any doubt. I also expect teachers to know how to spell the names of major towns.
With respect to word processed work: I expect teachers to be able to use the spell check function.

Everything I've received from the school has been spot on and correctly spelt. I would not have it any other way - and they know it.

Incidentally, all my children are happy and popular at school and well liked by the teachers. There's nothing wrong in letting the teachers know your views on spelling.I expect all the teachers who teach my children to spell correctly. And they do.
