Tooth / gum - any dentists on here?

Hi. I saw a dentist on 26th March due to a very sore gum between my top two back teeth that was causing pain into my cheek and ear. He xrayed, said no abscess, no filling needed, no periodontal disease, just an inflamed sore gum due to a small gap that was hard to clean (I don't floss as much as I should but since then have been meticulously flossing, using interdental brushes and used corsodyl mouthwash for a good two weeks after it cleared up). The X-ray also showed an impacted wisdom tooth which he said may or may not come through although I am 40. I was also given a 3 day course of 500mg amoxicillin which I completed. He also gave me a further course of 4 days penicillin to keep in reserve in case it came back. A few days later all was well.

10 days ago this started up again except the soreness was more on the gum at the very back of my last top tooth. For the first two days it was horrible sore and painful and couldn't open my mouth much to access. Upped the cleaning regime even more, started back on salt water rinses and it eased off a bit with ibuprofen and paracetamol. Since then the soreness has remained, yesterday I felt a little off and noticed minor pain in my ear again, cheek and lymph nodes in my neck all on that side. Since I had been given the reserve antibiotics I started to take these again yesterday and am 24 hours in. Not really noticing much difference yet.

The pain isn't awful, I have had an abscess and experienced the indescribably awful pain of that - this is a sore gum with a heavy ache in my upper jaw and mild pain into my ear. But having had an X-ray and been told my actual teeth are fine, I don't know what else I can do at the moment.

Any dentists around? Is this likely to be my wisdom tooth playing up? I had trouble with the lower impacted ones and had them removed but it was 20 years ago so although I think this feels like that, it's hard to remember now.

Massively grateful for any advice.

I would use a mouthwash that deals with gum issues. Corsodyl is effective but does yellow your teeth, there are ones that don't on the market. Listerine do a good one

I’m not a dentist but in particular what you said about not being able to open your mouth is exactly what I had when I had a gum infection.

I’m in my mid 30s and my wisdom teeth have only started to come through in the last couple of years. From speaking to my dentist it seems where they’re partially through it’s quite hard to clean properly and seems more prone to gum infections (I’d never had one before but have had a couple in last few years).

Definitely speak to your dentist. I managed to get antibiotics prescribed recently from a phone appointment. I’ve had Metronidazole which seems to be more targeted for dental issues than penicillin. It’s hard now it’s the bank holiday weekend but my dentists website lists a spreading infection as one of the emergencies they will deal with at the moment, so may still be worth contacting them and asking.

@AnotherMurkyDay I’m so glad you said that about Corsodyl! I’ve been using it a lot lately due to gum infection and was sure my teeth were yellowing! I’d put it down to being overdue for my regular check up and polish because of lockdown

No corsodyl is known for it, there's actually a warning in the small print on the bottle. I had to use it for an infected wisdom tooth and ended up paying for lots of expensive cleaning. When The problem with me wisdom tooth recurred I used one made by listerine that didn't stain

Call your dentist they will discuss it over the phone.

I’m not sure if this would be effective for your problem given your pain but I swear by Gengigel mouthwash and also their rub on gel for any gum problem.

I found it super healing. My mum had terrible dry socket after an extraction and her gum started to heal really quickly after using.

You can get it from amazon and I think they have a website with more info.

Thanks. I have just been out to get the listerine mouthwash and have cotton wool ball soaked in it sitting on my gum. It is relieving some discomfort and hopefully doing some good. I'm going to take the penicillin I have, if not better by Monday call dentist for different antibiotics.

I'm guessing tho that I need some hygienist work and goodness knows when they will be back in business. Sad
