To not vaccinate?

I am in no way anti-vax. My GP had recently called me to say they would like to give my 2 year old D.C the MMR booster early. I’m a bit confused as I had assumed they receive the MMR at 12 months and then again at 3 years and 4 months. Is it commonly being given out at 2 years now?? The nurse couldn’t really explain the rationale for this but said he would still be receiving his Pre school booster at 3 years but minus the MMR booster if I go ahead and have it now.

She mentioned that the booster should have been offered three months after the first dose but the practice did not inform us of this. Well it’s over a year now. I’m just confused.

Has anyone done this??

Are there lots of cases of MM or R in your area? That can lead to the 2nd dose being give earlier than 3y 4m

Just do it

I am very pro-vaccination, but I would ask for a doctor to ring you back and explain the rationale for it being given now. The receptionist isn't able to tell you and I would want to know why they aren't following the normal schedule. If you still have your red book, btw, the normal schedule is written in there.

It can be given sooner if there are cases in the area. It's not dangerous to get it earlier, it boosts the immune response

KKSlider · 07/05/2020 16:39

I'd ring and ask why. If it's because there is an outbreak in your area or your area is at high risk for an outbreak then it may be that they're offering the boosters early, the GP should be able to clear it up for going and then you can decide whether to have it done now or wait until the preschool set of vaccinations.

Nottherealslimshady · 07/05/2020 16:41

I wouldn't. But ours will be having a more spread out vaccine plan anyway. I'd definitely ask a doctor to speak to you about rather than just doing as you're told. If theres no reason for bringing it forward and you're concerned about the safety then dont agree to moving it.

KKSlider · 07/05/2020 16:42

Its safe to have it earlier and in areas with outbreaks it is often given earlier.

SimonJT · 07/05/2020 16:44

My son was asked to have his early as there had been outbreak in the area, as he had Men C as a baby it makes he more at risk of suffering a very bad case if he catches measles.

TerrorWig · 07/05/2020 16:46

I would have it. I’m not sure I really understand why you wouldn’t? Why can’t you just go and ask why it’s been brought forward then?

AveEldon · 07/05/2020 16:48

It depends where you live - some areas are following an accelerated MMR vaccination schedule where the 2nd dose of MMR is generally given at 18 months
