To ask for your help in fixing my toilet

This morning after I flushed it it’s just not stopped running. I can’t flush it now, the button is just pushing in and it’s incredibly loud. I haven’t the faintest idea what to do with it or even if we’ll be able to get a plumber out at the moment. Any ideas?

Until you get it fixed you can just keep a bucket of water nearby and pour it down the toilet. It should self level

There is someone on here called @pigletJohn who was really helpful when I had an issue with my shower before, he's usually in the property section

You need to take the top of the cistern off (screw should be under the button which you pull out). Then there will be a float which you will need to lift up. Sometimes furiously hitting the depressed button will release it without have to remove the lid.

neither the photo nor your description are incredibly clear.

what does the "button" feel like when you "push" it, normal or like something's broken?

how does the current water level in the cistern compare with normal?

maybe a short video, with audio [you could post it onto youtube], of what happens when you push the button, including some pretty close zoom-ins from different angles, might be useful?

There are lots of instruction videos on Youtube. I have found them to be very helpful

Is there something looking a bit like this fitted to some copper pipe going into the cistern?

It lets you turn the water off. You just need to turn the screw in the middle a quarter turn. That won't fix the problem, but it will stop the water running. Then I agree - worst-case but livable solution is keep a bucket of water by the loo. Pouring this quickly into it will flush it very successfully. Then get a plumber when you can. Doesn't sound like something you could easily fix yourself.

PS My plan also means you can book a plumber in rather than doing an emergency call-out, which is outrageously expensive.

PigletJohn · 07/05/2020 12:45

you can still use the toilet.

Is the overflow water running into the pan down the open-topped white tube?

or is the water level failing to rise to the line on the back of the cistern marked "water level?"

Thank you for all the advice, I was in the middle of watching a YouTube video when I magically stopped which also coincided with the workmen outside stopping digging up the road so I’m wondering if they had something to do with it
