To wish I could wear children's clothes?

Since having my daughters I've become envious of children's fashion. It's so easy to find gorgeous little casual dresses, skirts and leggings in comfortable, good quality cotton. Lovely muted pastel colours and cute prints too. Are there any brands that do this kind of thing for adults? I'm a SAHM so I want comfortable clothes but equally I don't want to live in loungewear or sportswear all the time.

If I could find something like this in my size I would buy it! mini-mono.com/collections/ss20/products/mary-to-add-prima-ballerina-dress

I'm small, but I can't wear clothes for five year olds. Maybe for 12-year olds I could. Any tips?

I'm quite small 5ft 4 / 8.5 stone and I can fit easily into the 13-14 yr range in most supermarkets. I really like the children's leggings, I've just bought some navy ones with polka dots all over them which I love from children's M and S.

One huge advantage is that children's clothes are cheaper for the same quality. There is no VAT charge, so it's at least 20% cheaper in most shops. I've also bought children's trainers (size 6) in Next and pyjamas.

I prefer the casual ranges, colourful children's clothes or sports ranges. I wouldn't buy a smart or "going out" outfit from a children's range. They aren't cut to accentuate cleavage for example and the necks are generally cut high on tops.

Try sugarhillbrighton. Think this might be the look you want.

PapayaCoconut · 07/05/2020 11:00

The InterrobangArt skirts look nice but they're a bit too "quirky 1950's tea dress", if you know what I mean? I have a much sportier look.

Seasalt?

I follow someone on Facebook who makes gorgeous brightly coloured clothes for kids and women, it’s called Leopard Spots Mama. I can’t remember where I found her but I have an inkling it might be from a thread on here about MNers who run their own business so you could be supporting a viper while you’re at it!

I’ve bought some knickers from her and they were lovely - really good quality cotton, beautiful bold prints and really well made to order in my choice of fabric/size/style.

I’ve seen lots of pics of mums wearing matching leggings with their babies, it’s v cute!

tigerbear · 07/05/2020 11:08

M&S kids goes up to age 16.
I’ve had some really good stuff in their 70% off sales, like summer dresses for £6!
Zara also go up to teen sizes.

"They aren't cut to accentuate cleavage*
That's great because I have none! 😅

Will definitely look into the Frugi adult range!! Looks great.

Thanks for all the tips everyone, I'm going to look into them. Baby just fell asleep so I'm gonna put her down and get on with housework now...

I know what you mean. My dc's clothes are mainly cotton and wash really well and dry quickly. Dd1 has a cream and navy striped summer dress with pink piping around the neck that I would totally wear if it was made in my size. It's not cutesy just a really nice knee length dress in quality fabric that washes well and dries quickly.

eaglejulesk · 07/05/2020 11:16

I know what you mean OP. There are some gorgeous clothes for little girls that I wish I could wear, but I'm too large and way too old Grin

Downunderduchess · 07/05/2020 11:17

There are some lovely bright fun clothes available in Australia. Not sure if they ship overseas. You could check out curvycartel on Instagram, she always has great outfits.

wejammin · 07/05/2020 11:18

I'm 5ft and size 10/12, I often get bits from gap kids, Zara, m&s and Tesco in their biggest sizes. Not so much bottoms due to post-baby (x3!) hips, but jumpers, coats, hoodies and t-shirts. Also love older kids shoes and trainers, especially m&s and Boden. I do find I wear a lot of black with just one 'kid' item so I don't look like Mr Tumble.

Abbccc · 07/05/2020 11:21

You might find something at H and M. They go up to size 14+.

Maggiemoothecoo · 07/05/2020 11:33

Have you tried on older clothes. Biden goes up to age 15/16. So does m&s and h&m. I have age 15 dungarees from h & m and I'm size 12 and relatively tall. I've also had tshirt from the next teenage section.

IntermittentParps · 07/05/2020 11:35

GapKids go up to age 13 (or I think it's sometimes called XXlarge or something). They might fit you. I'm 5' 10" but small of chest and generally slim, and I can wear vest tops in that size (not things with long sleeves as I have long lanky arms). I can also wear the biggest GapKids size in leggings; they're a bit short in the leg but fine with legwarmers or boots.
They have some lovely stripes and prints sometimes, and they can be really cheap when there are sales or offers on.

GrumpyHoonMain · 07/05/2020 11:43

I am a 12/14 and find the teen clothes in New Look a good fit usually.

Crunchymum · 07/05/2020 11:47

Love some of the tunic / smock tops I have for my 5yo!

I am short and fat but actually think they could work for me - alas they don't exist in adult size!

winterisstillcoming · 07/05/2020 11:49

I read somewhere that next 15/16 has the same measurements as a size 10.

I'm size 5 feet so wear Childrens shoes, and boots fit my bird legs nicely.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 07/05/2020 11:49

I have Moromini, Picalilly and Frugi clothes and I love them and get loads of postive comments about the fun designs :)

beela · 07/05/2020 11:50

I often wear boden and gap age 15-16.

I'm 5'4 and a size 10.

CampDragon · 07/05/2020 11:55

I am a size 14, 5ft 8in and can buy from the boys' range (age 16) at Next. Lovely joggers for half the price of the adult range, same quality. Not sure if girls' stuff is sized smaller, but it'll still be fine for you OP as you're slimmer than me. Experiment with ordering online, as they don't tend to carry above age 12 in most shops and it's less embarrassing to try on children's clothes in your own home. :-)

When I was size 10-12 I could get into everything age 13-14 or 15-16 from Boden kids (kidswear is reasonably priced, adult stuff is unaffordable). Lovely soft quality cotton stuff.

Also I don't know if this will suit you as you're after more stereotypically 'girly' clothes but I buy most of my clothes from the men's section of stores, especially jeans and t-shirts. They are usually better quality for less money than the womenswear. And the jeans have proper deep pockets! I'm quite curvy and men's jeans fit just fine. I then extend this to clothes in age 16 intended for boys, which are even better value.

Clothes intended for adult women are basically a complete ripoff! If you can find kids' stuff that you like, go for it. :-)

selfisolatingsince2007 · 07/05/2020 12:21

I know!!! I'm buying baby clothes at the moment and some of them are so cute. I look at some of the dresses and want them in my size! Joules brand especially!

Chty · 07/05/2020 12:25

I've eyed up some of the Harry potter Boden kids collection and wished it came in adult size Grin

midnightstar66 · 07/05/2020 12:28

I'm 5'8 and the H&M 14+ size is big on me if that helps. It's quite a grown up range though so not sure if it's what your after

midnightstar66 · 07/05/2020 12:30

Also I'd say joules do similar stuff in their adult range as the kids

MrsPussinBoots · 07/05/2020 12:33

I wear H&M teen clothes and I'm in my 30s. I've got some lovely pastel winter jumpers and comfy leggings much cheaper than their "adult" versions.
