To ask for help to identify my toddlers rash

My 2yr old woke up with a rash on one side of her body on Monday morning, The Drs didn’t know what was causing it but gave her hydrocortisone 1% and cetraben. They seem to be making it spread. She has no history of eczema, it hasn’t been hot for a heat rash. She’s totally fine in herself, no temperature, it’s not itching or bothering her. Does anyone have any ideas please?

A rash on one side of the body can often indicate shingles. Has she has chicken pox before?

Sillybilly6 · 07/05/2020 09:51

No she hasn’t. It’s the first thing the Drs said but when they saw it real life said it doesn’t look it shingles. Thanks for your reply Smile

That looks sore, if the cream has made it worse I'd try to get her an appointment today, you don't want her being uncomfortable all over the bank holiday. It does look like eczema to me but I'm not medically trained, and if it was then the cream should really have made an improvement.

Thanks for your reply. I think I’ll ring up and ask but they did say to give it a week as it’s not bothering her.

Is it rough to touch?

That looks like scarlet fever. My DC always had the rash first and then 24/48 hours later the other symptoms followed. My DC didn't always have the fever either.

Sillybilly6 · 07/05/2020 10:05

It’s a little bumpy. She’s had it since Monday. Do you have to catch Scarlett fever from someone as she she hasn’t been around one as were isolating?

It is contagious, so I have no idea how your DC would have caught it. The rash definitely looks similar to the rash my DC had.

Here's the NHS link

It does look like scarlet fever. People can be asymptomatic carriers, so it's theoretically possible to get it from someone in the household.
As PP said, it feels rough to the touch.

Sillybilly6 · 07/05/2020 10:15

Thanks, I just checked the link, she has had none of the other symptoms. No fever or sore throat and has it 4 days now. Waiting for a call back from the drs but they’re busy today.

Is it not a bit localised to be scarlet fever?

Sillybilly6 · 07/05/2020 11:25

I doubt it’s Scarlett fever but appreciate the responses. The drs did rule that out, it’s just very odd as we haven’t been around anyone to catch anything and it’s only in that one area.

Could it be pityriasis rosea? Did it start from one single quite big patch?

HamsterHolder · 07/05/2020 12:05

Has anyone in the house had covid? I tested positive 3 weeks ago and my three young children then all had similar looking rashes but were otherwise well, no cough or fever. Their rashes weren't localised to only half their body though, little eczma like patches scattered across chest and back that did not bother them. It was completely cleared by day 10 and they never needed medical attention.

Sillybilly6 · 07/05/2020 13:39

I’ve never heard of pityriasis rosea but I’ll look it up thanks!
No, No covid or any illnesses thanks , we’ve hardly left the house in weeks. I’m starting to wonder if it’s a heat rash even though it hasn’t been warm.
