Just found a lump in my breast.

Sorry, I know this isn’t an AIBU but I’m sat here and it’s late and I don’t want to wake DH as he’s asleep and has to be up early for work. Also don’t want to worry my mum or any friends either.

Yesterday morning my right breast felt a bit itchy. It went away during the day and then felt a bit itchy again at night.

Just now it itched again and I went to itch and felt a small lump, almost behind the nipple at the top if that makes sense?

I’m 33 and am now sat here really worried and worried I won’t be able to sleep tonight now. I know I should probably call my GP tomorrow but with all this COVID stuff I’m not sure they’re open at the moment anyway.

I feel really scared Sad

Don't panic. It could be literally anything. Ring the GP first thing (they should be open) and explain.

itsnotcakeitsbaby · 06/05/2020 22:55

Deep breaths OP. It might be nothing. Call your GP in the morning; they should be doing telephone appointments. Flowers

ludothedog · 06/05/2020 22:56

Try not to worry op. Given your age the chances are that the lump is nothing too serious. Your GP surgery will be open tomorrow and you will at least get a phone consultation with your GP.

If I was your DH I wouldn't want you to be worrying by yourself. Might be with waking him up for a bit of reassurance or give your mum/friend/sister a call? You don't need to do this by yourself. There are people out there who lave you and want to support you... you just have to let them.

moveandmove · 06/05/2020 22:57

Please don't panic. I found one 4 years ago in my early 30s and it turned out to be a fibro adenoma which is totally harmless. My best friend has now just found the same thing in herself in her early 30s.

SingingSands · 06/05/2020 22:58

Your GP will be open, and you should definitely call them in the morning.

Promise you'll do that? X

sarahC40 · 06/05/2020 23:24

Please ask for help from your gp - been there; tried to tell myself it was nothing; couldn’t stand it; asked for help and it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought. 💐

justasking111 · 06/05/2020 23:29

Please phone gp, they are seeing patients once you have answered some other questions.

HighlandSpring101 · 06/05/2020 23:30

I’ll be ringing the GP first thing in the morning don’t worry. I just know what I’m like though, I’m a terrible worrier and I know I won’t get any sleep tonight now. I’m praying to all the gods that this is nothing serious Sad

I don't know if this helps, but 80% or more turn out to be benign. I hope you are seen quickly and get a good outcome.

MazDazzle · 06/05/2020 23:42

My colleague recently had a lump. She went to her GP and got a referral. Despise current circumstances she was seen really quickly. Thankfully, it was benign.

You really need to get checked.

catthatgotthecream · 06/05/2020 23:57

Please try not to worry. I found a lump twice and both times is was nothing sinister. Hope you get some sleep tonightFlowers

Likethebattle · 07/05/2020 00:43

I found a lump and it was harmless. My mum had one removed and it was harmless too (the consultant said he knew it was as it was moving about and 99% or lumps that move around are harmless).

If your gp is like mine they will do a telephone triage and if you need to go in they will see you to check it out.

Please believe me that 80% of lumps are absolutely nothing.

Slothkin · 07/05/2020 02:00

Hope you’re getting some kip OP but know you’re doing the best and bravest thing getting in touch with the docs! I hope it may make you giggle, I once was terrified by finding a lump in my boob and the poor doctor had to delicately explain I just had a really big spot coming up 🤭

Justabitworried · 07/05/2020 02:58

I found a lump recently and it turned out to be harmless. I'm around your age. The doctor said most lumps in women our age turn out to be harmless. Please call your Dr tomorrow Flowers

ZaraW · 07/05/2020 06:51

As others have said 80% of not being anything to worry about but you need to rule it out. I was diagnosed at 38 with breast cancer. I found the lump early got the surgery and treatment and ten years on am doing well.

pontefractals · 07/05/2020 07:05

Similar story to ZaraW - found a lump at 37, went straight to the doc, it was cancer, I got treated and I'm still here and clear 7.5 years on. MOST lumps, especially in younger women, are harmless, but if one happens not to be then early diagnosis is key to making sure it ends well.

Persiaclementine · 07/05/2020 07:07

Ring your gp, your health matters even in a pandemic.

Cooper88 · 07/05/2020 07:09

When I was 19ish I rolled over in bed and found a lump, I was a worrier at the time as well, couldn't sleep etc. As soon as I saw my doctor I was referred to the hospital seen within 2 weeks and a biopsy a week later. It wasn't cancer thankgod it was a lymphoedema. The doctors I saw said that something like 75% of all women have a lump develop in there breasts but only 20% of those are cancer. So you have a very good chance of it not being cancer. Big hugs and your in my prayers.

MinnieMountain · 07/05/2020 07:15

Don't worry if you get put on a 2 week referral. Most lumps are checked that way.

iano · 07/05/2020 07:17

Good luck today Op. hope the GP can help.

Flamingolingo · 07/05/2020 07:19

Just reiterating what everyone else is saying - most likely to be nothing, statistically almost all lumps in younger women are nothing but still need to be checked. I’m the same age as you with the double whammy of a family history and naturally quite lumpy breasts. I usually end up in the breast clinic every 12-18 months, and have done since I was in my early 20s. Please give your GP a call, at the moment they are doing telephone appointments first. They will decide whether to see you in person or just refer. If they do refer it’s likely to be a ‘2 week wait’ appointment, and that letter is quite scary - it will have the words ‘suspected cancer’ in large letters across it. That doesn’t mean all that much at this stage, it’s just an instruction to the hospital to speed it up. I have no idea how things are doing right now, but hopefully clinics in your area are running. Usually you turn up, wait for a bit, have an ultrasound first of all. If the sonographer is happy with what they are looking at then it’s a quick chat with the consultant and home again. I expect (but haven’t yet experienced) that if the sonographer is worried it will be more tests, eg mammogram. Sometimes a biopsy would be needed but for eg a fibroadenoma they might be able to tell you there and then. Oh and one other thing - do you have children/did you breastfeed? I’m asking because not only do these things offer you some protection from certain kinds of cancer (not all), I had a long chat with the sonographer last time and she agreed that post breastfeeding breasts tend to be a bit lumpier in general.

HighlandSpring101 · 07/05/2020 08:08

Thank you all. I did manage some sleep, thankfully. I had a feeling it would be something like a 2 week wait. I don’t know how people do it, I won’t be able to relax/ think about anything else for the next 2 weeks (or however long it takes for me to get seen)

Last night I went on my Drs website and it said to fill out a form if you want an appointment, which I did. Had to state the reason for the appointment etc, it said I’ll hear back within 2 days, only with tomorrow being a bank holiday I’d assume it’ll probably be Monday now.

Argh, I just want it checked ASAP for peace of mind if nothing else but know I’m not any more special than anyone else under these circumstances and am just going to have to be patient Sad

HelloDulling · 07/05/2020 08:12

Ring them when they open and tell them you’ve filled in the form, but you have a lump in your breast and don’t want to wait until next week.

Blondebakingmumma · 07/05/2020 08:14

I’ve had 2 lumps in the past. I fatty deposit and one that turned into a cyst/boil. I spent all night on google. Fingers crossed your lump is something benign

Lurkeycakewoman · 07/05/2020 08:18

I'll jump on make sure you get it checked I'm 38 and about to start chemo for breast cancer this week. I thought it would be nothing aswell no family history
Your gp could well be opened tomorrow mine has been all the bank holidays through this covid stuff
Try phoning this morning they might get you an appointment quicker they did me when I told them my concerns
