To ask you what your boobs feel like?

Hi
A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer which has prompted me to be better at checking my own and I’m now realising I’m not sure what ‘normal’ should feel like. I have a large hard mass under both nipples which takes up about two thirds of each breast and within that there are lots of lumps and bumps. Both boobs feel the same. Is this normal? It seems crazy to be asking about this on the internet but I’ve googled and struggled to find out what exactly ‘normal’ should feel like!

Mine feel the same as you’ve described. I’m 24.

Calabasa · 06/05/2020 21:12

the point of checking is to know YOUR normal, and be able to notice any changes.

Thingsthatgo · 06/05/2020 21:12

Mine are similar. I have lumpy boobs, (which is more evident because they are smallish). They gets more lumpy just before my period. I know what is normal for me, and have been to the breast clinic 3 times with new lumps. All of which have turned out to be ok.

lilyboleyn · 06/05/2020 21:19

Mine feel the same. And a bit droopy after two children. Grin

shouldibworried · 06/05/2020 21:21

Thanks, that’s made me feel a bit better. I know we each have our own normal and I’ve always assumed mine were normal but it’s difficult to google what I said in my original message because the search results are just about what to do if you find a lump. I will keep checking them regularly and check with my doctor next time I’m there, probably won’t be for a while with everything that’s happening. Thanks for the responses x

Yes the same as what you have described

AhCheeses · 06/05/2020 21:22

I used to work at a breast clinic and one of the consultants I worked with would tell our patients that 'normal' breasts should feel like a bag of porridge! 😁

Bibijayne · 06/05/2020 21:26

That sounds pretty normal. But keep checking. You'll have slight changes through your cycle, but anything suspect get checked out.

Chiyo666 · 06/05/2020 21:28

Mine are really soft like little water balloons. I do have the worlds tiniest nips though so probably not a lot going on behind them.

chunkycoke · 06/05/2020 21:28

Mine are the same. I think you just have to check any new differences

Auridon4life · 06/05/2020 21:30

Look at a medical cross section of a breast.

Tanfastic · 06/05/2020 21:37

Mine feel like two bags of porridge 😂

However if I feel really deep I can feel a more lumpy/grainy feeling along the bottom bit on each and also lumpy areas in the top outer section. Normal for me. My right boob is also lumpier than my left. Again, normal for me.

My gp explained a distinct lump would pretty much stand out. A bit like a pebble on a sandy beach.

Queenofthestress · 06/05/2020 21:44

Mine are quite different now, but yes they should feel like a bag of porridge essentially, sometimes you get fibrous lumps at the beginning, during and end of your period but they're harmless and go on their own.

You should get checked for every new lump that stands out, but mine felt rock hard like a pebble. I could move it freely under the skin. It wasn't squishy or anything, it was just 'there'

Youcunnyfunt · 06/05/2020 22:17

A doctor told me to check with my palms, not my fingers. Apparently prodding around will feel lumpy - because it's fatty tissue! You can feel hard lumps or "new" lumps by rolling your palm across your boobs, check all around it (mine are quite big...). If you're new to checking you might mistake prominent bones for lumps if you check using fingers rather than palms (which I did as a teen, my ribs stick out underneath).

Just to add on, laying down whilst you check helps as well, that's how I noticed my lump

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 07/05/2020 20:45

There will be a lot of variation depending on your age, point in your cycle and whether you have/are breastfeeding. I have a large smoothish lump in my left breast which was previously biopsied and is a benign fibroadenoma (breast mouse). I am breastfeeding so they range from soft and "baggy" to engorged and like round hot rocks!

quarantinevibes · 07/05/2020 21:34

I also have large hard mass behind both too. If you’re worried you can book in with the dr to check for you x

Itstimeslikethesewegiveandgive · 07/05/2020 21:36

I have exactly as you described op. Also very sensitive

CherryPavlova · 07/05/2020 21:38

It’s about knowing your normal, as someone says.
Do something if your nipple retracts, you notice dimpled skin changes over a patch or a thickening of the deeper tissues, a bit like a scar in the inside, or a patch like eczema on your nipple. Obviously I’d there is a definitive lump as well.

ItsAllForYou · 07/05/2020 21:40

Mine are like @Chiyo666 - feel like water balloonsBlushmine are only small if that makes any difference

MulberryPeony · 07/05/2020 21:59

Anyone else sat there reading this copping a feel? Thanks for the reminder op but yes mine are pretty lumpy normally.

ofwarren · 07/05/2020 22:02

I have that too and I think they are called fibrocystic breasts or something similar.
My doctor also said the same about a lump feeling hard like a stone.
