The findings chime with a story that viral last week of a Kenyan widow who was found cooking stones for her eight children to make them believe she was preparing food for them, saying: "I could do nothing because I had nothing."

It seems really cruel to do something to make your children believe you are preparing food for them when there is no food.

Hopefully international aid will provide food.

I think you’re very privileged to not understand that level of desperation

ItsGoingTibiaK · 07/05/2020 03:56

I assume, OP, you’ve never even said to your children “Don’t worry, it will be fine” when you have no fucking clue if it will be fine or how the fuck you’re going it make it fine but actually what you want more than anything in the world, perhaps even more than it being fine is for your children not to worry?

What a nasty, nasty thread you’ve started, complete lacking in empathy or basic compassion.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 07/05/2020 03:59

Oh, and to actually answer your question: because she’s absolutely fucking desperate, that’s why. In a way you will never, ever experience. But go ahead and judge away.

That poor woman and her poor children. I count myself lucky that my child has never known hunger like that.

you arent being unreasonable to question why-if youre blessed enough to have no concept of/ability to envisage the last thing a mother EVER does is surrender all-and deny her babies a spark of hope.

Wow OP.
Please go and educate yourself, you are clueless.
Or a troll.

AvalancheKit · 07/05/2020 05:55

It is really simple.

Buying food from the Southern Hemisphere to be transported to the northern hemisphere creates huge amounts of CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions create climate change which directly impacts on the poor in the Southern Hemisphere. Add to that the felling of rainforests to grow crops and the crisis is being fuelled further. That land is of poor agricultural value gradually sustaining less and less after just a few years. This eventually leads to desertification.

My Mum said her favourite game as a child was to look at pictures in a cookery book and pretend to eat what was on the pages. She had 1 sweet potato per week to live on as a 5 year old girl growing up in war torn Shanghai. Her brother was shot for dragging home a street sign to chop up for firewood. I think it's whatever gets you through the day really, very very hard to judge in these circumstances. VE Day is really bringing these memories to the fore.

Do you have an inherent lack of imagination op? Horrible thread.

It has, however, highlighted just how shit it is for people and how privileged we are and prompted me to donate. Donation suggestion for you. I think this would actually be far more helpful than disparaging words. www.actionagainsthunger.org.uk/urgent-coronavirus-appeal
