Vegetarians more prone to mental health issues

An interesting meta-study here assessing a number of other studies to conclude there is “clear evidence” that those who abstained from consuming meat tended to have higher rates or risk of depression, anxiety, and self-harm compared to those who did not.

No indication whether it's lack of meat making people unwell, mental health problems causing a susceptibility to vegetarianism, or some common cause for both.

Also, although meat eaters may not like this, could it be argued that being vegetarian suggests a heightened awareness around health and emotion. And that this awareness means they are more likely to seek treatment or recognise that they have mental health issues in the first place.
The meat eaters I know have a similar opinion of the increase in mental health and learning disability diagnoses as they do the increase the increase in vegetarianism and veganism. The leaning towards the thoughts of them being fads and specific to "snowflakes". Not meant as an attack, just an observation of those around me.

Depression runs in my family. There’s only one veggie on the whole bunch! Therefore meat eaters are more likely to be depressed by that sample.

This was posted on Reddit yesterday. It was funded by a large American meat lobby I believe.

I’m vegetarian. I take medication for anxiety. I’m an over thinker,

Same. I’ve been a bit neurotic and anxious most of my life as well as vegetarian. I think one of the reasons I gave up meat as a child was worry about food poisoning, as well as not wanting to harm animals.

The majority of the world’s vegetarians live in extended families and have very rigid social customs with little room for individuality. I imagine that’s what causes the anxiety.

What a big load of utter tosh! A study of 150,000. Also the original paper states there was no correlation.

I wouldn't be surprised if the study had been funded by the meat industry (I am not saying it has been).

Been vegetarian for over 30 years and doing just fine.
