I’m waking up so many times in the night!

I’m knackered all day, sometimes have a nap but not always. Go to bed and eventually fall asleep, but then I wake up every hour. It’s driving me mad!
I get back to sleep pretty quickly but wake up again. It’s been happening for a couple of weeks now.
What could be causing this and, more importantly, how can I stop it happening?

Just realised I’ve put this in AIBU... oops. Sorry

I'm like you too OP. Last night I tried staying up until just after midnight in the hope I'd be so shattered I'd sleep through. Woke at 1.15am and was then wide awake until 3.30 ish. DH then woke me at 6am by showering. Dozed off around 7 only to be woken at 7.30 by next doors kids playing basketball and shrieking Angry

That's a normal night for me Sad

Dopplebangerz · 05/05/2020 14:48

I’ve never slept an entire night without waking up once. But for it to be every hour for the past 2 weeks is getting a bit daft now! Someone suggested sleeping tablets but I’m reluctant to go down that route as I have kids in the house

Magnesium Glycinate helped me when I was waking up every hour.

I still wake a couple of times during the night but not nearly so often and I usually manage 3 or 4 hours before I start, whereas before I could fall asleep in minutes but more or less guarantee to be wide awake again an hour later

Becstar90 · 05/05/2020 14:52

This is my life except I have a toddler who is causing it hahaConfused

MulticolourMophead · 05/05/2020 15:00

I'm awaiting delivery of a weighted blanket for my sleep issues. While these blankets were originally designed for children with ASD, they help people with other issues to sleep, so I'm giving it a go.

Meanwhile, I'm taking multivitamins to make sure I'm not deficient in any, and wear a sleep mask to make sure that I'm not being affected by lights of any sort.

macpumpkin1 · 05/05/2020 15:02

Probably threadworms (apparently 60% of primary school children have them). I would get some worm medicine and treat the whole family.

zscaler · 05/05/2020 15:03

I used to suffer with this and my gp prescribed amytriptaline, which is an anxiety medication but predominantly used for sleep issues. I only take a low dose but it has helped my sleep enormously - I never wake in the night now.

zscaler · 05/05/2020 15:05

To clarify, they aren’t strictly a sleeping tablet - they won’t put you to sleep straight away or stop you waking up if someone tries to wake you etc. They just help regulate sleep.

Dopplebangerz · 05/05/2020 15:06

If it happens again tonight, I’ll call my GP tomorrow. I’m fed up of feeling crappy now

I take a "baby dose" of it too zscaler. 10 mg since dh died. Its fab for sleep but wouldnt in any way stop you from responding to kids op as it just relaxes you doesn't zonk you out in a small dose. Do you find it's affected your weight at all zscaler?

Thefaceofboe · 05/05/2020 15:33

I’m the same. Haven’t had a good nights sleep since lockdown was announced. I’m thinking deep down I’m anxious about it, although day to day I feel fine.

TooGood2BeTrue · 05/05/2020 15:47

Anxiety
Hormones
Bedroom too hot / to cold
Sleep apnoe

I suffered badly from sleeplessness until I started on 50mg of Sertraline per day.

Jope your sleep improves soon!

Dopplebangerz · 05/05/2020 16:12

I already take citalopram. Could I take something else as well as that?

OP posts:
Winkywoop · 05/05/2020 17:25

Could be the citalopram causing it

mrsbyers · 05/05/2020 17:34

Try taking your citalopram just before bed

And I adore my weighted blanket

Dopplebangerz · 05/05/2020 17:39

I always take it before bed anyway.
I’ve been taking it for 3 years so would be surprised if it was that causing it

I find one of the worst things about insomnia is the boredom. I lay there, hour after hour in the dark, listening to DH breathing, watching the clock read 1.15, 2.15.3 fucking 15. So boring.

Tonight I'm going to do the opposite. If I do my usual thing of sleep for 20 mins then ping wide awake, I shall concentrate on trying to force myself to be alert and stay awake. Hopefully my brain will rebel and sleep.

SnowyMouse · 05/05/2020 20:30

I've got the same problem, they've suggested increasing my antipsychotic or antidepressant.

ButtWormHole · 05/05/2020 21:27

Citalopram is known for keeping you up at night

Dopplebangerz · 05/05/2020 21:50

Is it really? When I first started taking it, I noticed I was sleeping better. Would it suddenly have the opposite effect?

OP posts:
Mamabear12 · 05/05/2020 21:52

Trying cutting out caffeine during the day and alcohol if your drink. Get sunlight first thing in the morning and exercise. Make sure to get enough so your properly tired at night. Eat a balanced diet. Take a multivitamin. No screens 3 hours before bed. Take a hot bath with magnesium salts. Add some lavender oil. Make sure not to drink too much liquid before bed and no eating 3 hours before bed. No heavy meal for dinneR. Do all this for a few days and it should help.

chatterbugmegastar · 05/05/2020 21:58

Try listening to Thomas Hall on utube. Subliminal Mediations on sleeping + anxiety, that sort of thing. He's brilliant

FraughtwithGin · 05/05/2020 22:04

Oh for heaven's sake, get a grip.
If you have not been active enough during the day, either mentally or physically, you may not be tired.
Try Jason Stephenson, if that helps.
These are stressful times for a lot of people, just accept that you are not in control and do your best.
