To think a holiday like this in August could be possible?

We have cancelled our dream holiday for the end of June but I am hoping we might be able to go somewhere in August.

If no one is flying I was wondering if it would be viable to have a holiday which is drive able. Like to the south of France. I thought maybe we could drive there and have a villa which is just for us with a pool. That way we wouldn't be mixing. But I guess if the restaurants are closed or we didn't want to go to one it could be a bit miserable just cooking ourselves and staying in every evening. I guess staying in the villa everyday might be boring too even if we got one with a pool.
I guess the beaches would be open but it depends how crowded they would be.

Is that doable?

We have a drive/villa holiday in Brittany booked for August. I think it's highly unlikely that it will go ahead. We haven't heard anything from the villa owner or the ferries yet however. Any thread on this subject on here appears to give a resounding 'no way' but I think a lot of people are clinging to a tiny glimmer of hope until they hear a definitive answer.

I certainly wouldn't be booking a holiday of this type though at the moment.

If companies aren't flying it will be because the various governments have decided they're unhappy about the risks of international travel. The travel industry and airlines aren't in a position to keep grounded for no reason.

If it is reasonable to fly somewhere then it's reasonable to drive somewhere and you can choose your mode of transport.

If it's unreasonable to fly somewhere or they've stopped flights and limited travel then don't drive there to try and get around it so you can have your holiday where you'd be another person spreading germs, using supermarkets, limited local facilities etc.

Who knows? Nobody will be able to give you an answer Op. You'll get those that say nobody will be going on holiday untill 2025 and those that will say it will all be over by the end of May. It will be guesswork.

If you do manage to get there, you’ll probably have to isolate for 14 days. Then come home and do the same thing. Might as well just sit in your house playing french music and eating french food, won’t be much difference!

There have been a million and one "will I be able to go on holiday in X month?" threads.

No-one knows is the only answer.

People can speculate to their hearts content but no-one has a crystal ball and can't predict how countries will be treating tourists or what will be open.

We all just have to wait and see.

AJPTaylor · 05/05/2020 09:03

If you are sensible the only thing to do is assume no foreign holidays for the foreseeable future.
If you are ultra sensible assume no UK hols for the foreseeable. It is staycation year.

We have been doing that anyway as a holiday is beyond our financial grasp. Actually makes quite a nice holiday. Spend a bit more on food than normal, buy nice wine, take more time over the cooking.

Not sure what we will do this year, we were planning to go to Northumberland to look at Vindolanda but have had to cancel.

Anyone got a good fish sauce recipe?

This. Do people think MN has some sort of crystal ball or insider knowledge? It's these or the multitude of 'when will schools go back?'

Grin
If it's not those threads then it's the multitude of 'I know the rules say X, but I want to ignore that so please tell me it's totally reasonable to do this thing that is totally not social distancing and not following the rules'. If they knew it was fine then there's no need to start another lockdown 'AIBU to ....' thread.

People can only guess, I think it might be ok but not definite.

But whether I’d actively book one now is another thing. Probably not.

Highfivemum · 05/05/2020 09:25

it’s a difficult one. France have excluded the UK from having to isolate if coming over. So you wouldn’t have to isolate however no one knows if anything will be open and or the restrictions. I wouldn’t book anything. Just be prepared maybe to do a last minute booking when you know more factual info. In my view I would stay at home this year.

Maybe you need to get the number of the 'lightworker' who can ask Gandhi or was it Princess Di the answer to your question since at the present time none of us know.....

Thanks for the replies, I know no-one can really tell I was just musing if it's a viable way of having a holiday in an alternative way.

I disagree about flying- there are many reasons why flying might not be viable over driving. No international travel would not necessarily be the reason flights can't go ahead, it might be because it is impossible to social distance or because there is a limit of the number of people on flights so there are less and it's harder to get one. But driving would be ok if only going with your family. If there are no flights, but boarders are open and there is no quarantine then there is a strong possibility we could go. We wouldn't get the ferry we would go via the tunnel.
