To tell you all about my shocking experience with Barclays

Posting here for traffic. I can’t actually believe what we’ve experienced with Barclays Bank over the last few weeks. I really just need to vent. My DH is self employed and has not been able to work for 6 weeks (and counting!) due to COVID-19. We knew he was due a tax rebate because he’d overpaid in the previous tax year. It was a decent amount that would really help us right now. On the first day of the new tax year we did his tax return. HMRC were absolutely fantastic and paid his refund within a few days.

DH logged in one morning and it was paid and in his available balance. I am 30 weeks pregnant and we need to start getting things ready for baby. DH logged on to his banking app the next morning before we started shopping online and suddenly the rebate money was gone! DH phoned the bank. We were on hold for FOUR hours. When we finally got through we were told that HMRC requested the money back. Cue total panic! We called HMRC and they said they had done no such thing. They said they could never just take money from someone’s account and that it must be a problem on the bank’s side. We got in touch with Barclay’s again and this time we were told there was a ‘glitch’ in the system and that thousands of people had had their HMRC tax rebate payments put on hold. They assured us it would be rectified within 48hrs. Within 48hrs it was not rectified. Things had now actually got worse because suddenly DH couldn’t use his account at all. No transfers, cards blocked, no access. We then received a text to say that they know it’s ‘not ideal’ (they actually used those words!) but all HMRC payments were being returned to HMRC and that everyone would be able to access their accounts within 4 days. It has now been nearly a month since this all started and we’ve only just been able to access the account from today. Still no money from HMRC.

I have to say that HMRC have been fantastic though. They told us that Barclays security systems rejected all of their payments and that they would be sent back in due course. They’ve been as helpful as they could possibly be and so friendly. I’m just so upset because we’ve had no money for food, all of our direct debits bounced and we’ve not had a single apology from the bank or even an acknowledgment that they’ve messed up. It’s been an absolute nightmare! All of the Barclays advisors have been downright rude. If COVID-19 wasn’t the only thing that mattered right now I’m sure this would be on the news, thousands of people locked out of their accounts for weeks with money just blocked for no good reason!? I just needed to rant somewhere! On Barclays Facebook page a few people have spoken up too. I just can’t believe how flippant they’ve been. The last few weeks have been hell.

Blimey I was about to apply for a bounce back loan with them, think I’ll go elsewhere now. Thanks for the heads up

Hopeisnotastrategy · 04/05/2020 21:50

Contact the financial pages of the national press, they will be only to happy to run with this story and exert pressure on Barclays to sort this out. Also your MP. Good luck. 💐

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/05/2020 21:54

They had a major cyber hack recently, and I imagine this was a side effect of some of the updates. If you haven’t complained do it. Let the Daily Mail know too if possible as they seem tend to get banks to provide compensation and refunds even without publishing

LaurieFairyCake · 04/05/2020 21:58

Wouldn't they even offer an overdraft in the interim ? Shock

Wattagoose90 · 04/05/2020 22:01

Complain. Be sure to stress the financial and emotional stress they've put you and your family under. There will be a decent amount of compensation provided. Just don't expect a quick response. There'll be a back log and they'll be on limited staff.

AJPTaylor · 04/05/2020 22:02

Terrible.
When dd3 got embroiled in the ridiculous TSB saga she opened an account online with Nationwide and had a new card within days. She then reset her direct debits etc with them. I suggest your dh does the same and tells hmrc the new account details.
Then separately file a complaint against barclays.

LolaGracie · 04/05/2020 22:04

Thanks for the replies so far!
@ChrissieKeller61Up until now we’ve always been happy with their service. I’ll definitely be looking for a new bank after this.

@Hopeisnotastrategy thank you for the tips!

@GrumpyHoonMain I just wish they had been more upfront with information, we’ve not had an explanation at all, just vague excuses. Hopefully the papers pick up on this thread!

@LaurieFairyCake nothing at all! DH couldn’t even access his account. We’ve not had a single apology either.

Contact Money Box on Radio 4. It sounds right up their street.

Alicemovedtothecity · 04/05/2020 22:08

Barclays are terrible! A family relative is making a huge complaint against them after they let someone open an account in her name with a credit card etc online and gave it the go ahead as apparently they had done all their security checks. Well it’s come to light that these checks couldn’t have possibly been done as they have a lot of information wrong so it would have flagged up...looks like someone is doing fraud who actually works there and is passing the accounts to open and then running the credit cards up to the max!

LolaGracie · 04/05/2020 22:08

@Wattagoose90 I will do that, thank you. I know they’re on limited staff right now. When we finally got through to them the first time the advisor was clearly working from home, kids were screaming in the background and the guy sounded extremely stressed 😂

@AJPTaylor we’re definitely moving banks, that’s for sure!

You need to make a complaint to Barclays and they've got 8 weeks to respond. Hopefully it gets resolved via interest and compensation but if not, you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 04/05/2020 22:17

We had massive issues with our mortgage with them. A complaint to the Financial Ombudsman later and we got £500 compensation. It was worth making the complaint but i'd never use them again.

Queenoftheashes · 04/05/2020 22:20

Yeah and for every complaint that goes to the ombudsman they get fined whether it’s justified or not (although my knowledge is maybe 10 years out of date)

justasking111 · 04/05/2020 22:26

Was on the phone for four hours with Barclays two weeks ago we took it in turns to hold the phone. Never did get through.

I would advise everyone not to have all their money in any one bank, glitches like this cause so much distress.

LolaGracie · 04/05/2020 22:26

Thank you all for your suggestions! For some reason I was a bit hesitant to post this but you’ve been so helpful.

@Alicemovedtothecity that’s really shocking and quite worrying! I hope your relative gets it sorted out and is fairly compensated.

OP posts:
Snorkelface · 04/05/2020 22:26

Definitely go to the Ombudsman, usually you have to lodge an official complaint with the bank first and go through a process but contact them tomorrow - and Martin Lewis. Love Martin Lewis.

PandaHorse · 04/05/2020 22:30

Barclays are awful. I went to the Ombudsmen and won.

Devlesko · 04/05/2020 22:30

change banks, vote with your feet.
I bet it was a bloody scam and their security wasn't up to it. It doesn't fill me with confidence anyway.
They did something like this to mil many years ago.
They always seem slow, which makes you think they are missing something vital.

Marmunia1975 · 04/05/2020 22:33

Barclays 'lost' our mortgage application with the result that we moved to a higher rate with our current lender for months until we got a new one sorted.

Alicemovedtothecity · 04/05/2020 22:34

@LolaGracie honestly how it passed all their ‘security checks’ I will never know. That’s why it’s definitely a inside job for it to have gone through!

If I was you get any money you are owed paid from the HMRC as they already have your bank details now and you don’t want to muck about with changing the details etc when you need the money then as soon as you have the money close the account and change banks! Smile

cortex10 · 04/05/2020 22:35

Katie Morley at the Telegraph seems very successful in helping people sort this type of problem

Apirateslifeforme · 04/05/2020 22:35

Barclays have been rubbish to deal with. So bad intact that we started using tide accounts for our business. Just got 10k back from the taxman. No problem at all.

Apirateslifeforme · 04/05/2020 22:36

*infact

Babyroobs · 04/05/2020 22:52

I misread my visa bill date and got charged for paying one day late. I have always paid off my bill in full every month for the past 25 years and the one time I am a day late they charge me £8. I know it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things but I am cross. I hope you manage to get sorted out.

magicfarawaytrees · 04/05/2020 23:01

They once blocked a very large cheque for me after a day or two(totally legit, from a very well known company). No reasons, no excuses even though I’d paid it in with my passport personally. Cashier who took it very unprofessional, may as well have told the whole queue the value because of her volume and stated ‘if I got this I wouldn’t ever work again’.

Needless to say I went down to the bank, went absolutely ballistic and then the Cheque cleared. It’s the only time I’ve been offered coffee in a bank Grin

But they were dreadful and caused a lot of stress. Complain loudly.
