Am I waking the neighbours up by doing this?

I have quite bad insomnia at night, I often can't sleep until 5am and during the time I normally get the urge to use the toilet.
We live in an apartment and I'm just worried if I would be waking them up.
It's been on my mind for quite some time yet nobody has ever said anything about it, so i'm assuming they can't hear me.
I'm quite embarrassed about it though, could somebody here tell me they really can't hear or are they just being polite Blush

Not much you can do if it is disturbing them, but I can't imagine it being noisy enough to wake them. They might hear it if not properly asleep but nah, not loud enough to wake someone

ClientQ · 04/05/2020 19:52

I am often up late at night. Can't hear a thing from my neighbours (I'm downstairs, they're above me). I don't even hear their washing machine

AddressLabel · 04/05/2020 20:02

Depends if your walls are made of paper or not. When my DH had a flat you could actually hear the neighbours having a wee at night when it was really quiet. If you are worried you could follow the “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down” . Then flush the loo about 7 or 8am

PumpkinP · 04/05/2020 20:04

Agree it depends on the flat. I hear my upstairs neighbours a lot, talking, walking around, flushing toilet etc

Thethiniceofanewday · 04/05/2020 20:06

When i lived in flats the bathroom light was connected to a really noisy fan which definitely would have woken the whole floor so I turned the fan off at the fuse box so i could pee in peace after dark! I think in general people expect some level of background noise as long as it’s reasonable.

Itwasntme1 · 04/05/2020 20:24

I live in a semi detached house and can hear the neighbours walking about, closing doors, bathroom fan etc.

But they only wake me up if they are really yelling. At 5am most people will still be fast asleep, and it would probably take a loud noise to wake them.

heartsonacake · 04/05/2020 20:30

Nobody can answer that for you. Every flat is different; I’ve lived in ones where you could hear the neighbours every move, others where you couldn’t hear a thing.

topazdiamondsandemeralds · 04/05/2020 20:32

like pp has said it really depends on your flat.

MrsOffield · 04/05/2020 20:33

We can hear our neighbours flicking switches & slamming doors but I think to hear someone using the loo, you'd have to have super thin walls. I wouldn't worry - if you need the loo, you need the loo.

Bluntness100 · 04/05/2020 20:35

Can you hear them using the loo op?

Koddii · 04/05/2020 20:40

If I were you I would not worry about it. My neighbours make noise that wakes me. It is what happens when living in an apartment. I doubt very much they will hear you at 5am. Even if they do, you are doing nothing wrong. It's not like you are playing loud music or doing something very loud so I would not give it another thought.

Notapheasantplucker · 04/05/2020 20:52

I can hear my neighbours fart so I think it just depends on how thin the walls are as other PP have said.

I'd go with the suggestion AdressLabel said.
I wouldn't worry about it though you're not doing anything wrong, you can't help needing the loo!

Rosebel · 05/05/2020 00:57

We live in a semi detached and if we're awake I usually hear them quite a lot but the only time they wake me up is when their children are running about shouting (not that early usually).
If no-one has said anything I wouldn't worry. Not a lot you can do about it anyway.

NeutrinoWrangler · 05/05/2020 01:43

I think it would be incredibly unreasonable for someone to be upset about a neighbour needing to use the toilet at any time of the day or night. If you need it, you need it! Most likely, if they hear it, they'll just roll over and fall right back to sleep. Sometimes my husband and I wake one another when we need to get up at night, but it's just part of living together. More often than not, we'll sleep through it.

As long as you're not stomping around, talking loudly, running noisy appliances, or listening to TV or music at a high volume during the night, you're doing your duty as regards your neighbours' sleep needs.

HoppingPavlova · 05/05/2020 04:12

Irrespective of whether they can hear you or not, no-one can complain about someone using the toilet. That would be completely unreasonable.

We are not in an apartment but single house with the standard soundproofing. Even so, we have a rule that no-one flushes of a night. May add our household only wee's during the night, if someone had an upset stomach then it would definitely be flushed. Otherwise, whoever uses the toilets first thing in the morning just flushes it all.

Purpleartichoke · 05/05/2020 04:17

Even if they can hear you, you are far from the only person using the facilities at night. The middle aged, that would be me, and the elderly frequently doing the same.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 05/05/2020 04:18

If they can hear it at 5am they can also hear every time you poo and wee any other time, when they are wide awake. Does this make you feel better or worse 😂

Lynda07 · 05/05/2020 04:24

You could avoid flushing the toilet when you go during the night. I know that goes against the grain but some bleach down and leave it until morning, it won't hurt. It's quite usual for insomniacs to wee more often when awake during the night.

mathanxiety · 05/05/2020 04:57

Just use the loo and don't worry about it. Flush and forget about it.

Are you very anxious in general or just about this?

And please don't put bleach into pee and leave it to become chlorine gas - Shock
Nothing will irritate your neighbours more than a whiff of this...

Thepigeonsarecoming · 05/05/2020 05:00

Maybe just shout sorry really loud each time you go 😂

PrincessPain · 05/05/2020 06:31

I used to live on the upper floor of a 2 storey flat.
If I was in the bathroom I could hear downstairs have a wee, the actual sound of it hitting the water in the bowl. I assume they could hear me too.
Its just one of those things and it never bothered me.
Perfectly normal bodily functions

Microzilla · 05/05/2020 06:39

It depends on the build and insulation and which rooms are under or above which. In my block I may as well move in with the woman in the flat below. I can hear nearly everything - both sides of phone calls, peeing, walking about, doors closing, kitchen utensils clattering, sneezing, nose blowing etc. Weirdly one of the only things I don’t hear is the toilet flushing 🤔. If I can hear her she will hear me I’m sure. But these sounds are all part of life and can’t be helped.

The pigeons are coming that’s a great idea. I will try that tonight Grin

Alicemovedtothecity · 05/05/2020 07:14

I came on here thinking I was going to read about you playing a musical trumpet or something!Grin
Honestly you are over thinking this! It’s your flat and if you need to use the toilet at what ever time during the night then you can! Just don’t slam the doorWink

tillyteatowel · 05/05/2020 07:43

I was also expecting ridiculous noise!

It is my personal opinion that if anyone cannot sleep through a toilet being flushed that is always going to be their problem and not anyone else’s.

crimsonlake · 05/05/2020 07:52

Simple, just dont flush the loo.
