To think I can become a morning person?

I'm usually the type of person that has a lie on at the weekend & only getting up early if I have to but now with this lockdown & not having a routine I'm lazing in bed every day until around 12 every day & then I have no motivation to do anything for the rest of the day. I haven't exercised for weeks which is not like me at all. I'm starting to feel really crap in myself. I'm usually a night owl but I'd love to become a morning person. I feel my day would be so much more productive & I'd feel better in myself & I'd love it to become a habit that I can carry through to when things get back to normal. Any early birds out there that can share their tips?

I never used to be a morning person but have got more of a morning person as I have got older. It sounds like you could do with some structure in your day. Try and stick to the same wake up time each day and get to bed at a reasonable time. I like to excercise in a morning to get it out the way. You could add in a bit of excercise each day- p.e with Joe is really good or there are other short work outs on you tube. Excercise will boost your energy levels Smile

I thought I was a night owl but had to start getting up early for a new job / commute and discovered it suited me and actually gave me more energy.

You just have to set the alarm and get up!

chatwoo · 05/05/2020 07:38

I have thought about 'becoming a morning person' several times, but I just don't think it's going to work out Grin

Even worse now working from home, as I can stay in bed longer because of no commute!

Obvs if I have to get up, I do, but given the choice...

BertieBotts · 05/05/2020 09:33

DH reckons getting up isn't painful or difficult at all Confused I find it incredibly hard before 8am and just normally hard after that.

Gtugccbjb · 05/05/2020 09:34

Not one answer. Early night.

Gtugccbjb · 05/05/2020 09:34

Only one I meant

Thank you all for the suggestions. I set my alarm for 7 this morning & I must have turned it off in my sleep, I don't remember doing it. I'll move the phone to the other side of the room tonight so I can't do that again tomorrow. I woke at 9.30 & I'm dying for a cup of tea. Usually DP would make me one & I'd have it in bed but I've asked him not to anymore so i'll have to get up. I'm going to do some exercise now & be showered & dressed by 12 which is usually the time I'd get up. I think lockdown has me in a slump. I can't wait for normal life to resume & get a proper routine back in place.

I'm not sure what it is exactly, but there's something about getting up early that I just love. It feels, to me at least, so much more refreshing than going to bed late and waking up late. I don't know why but it does!

Love51 · 05/05/2020 10:37

I have one of those alarms that mimics sunrise inside your bedroom so that morning doesn't come as such a shock to the system. That helped in my transition from permanently exhausted pigeon to lark.
You need to actually relax in the evening, any of chill with a book, chatting with your partner, playing music, sex, listening to podcasts, bath / shower. Cross stitch, knitting whatever hobbies that aren't over exerting. No deciding that after 9pm is the time to rearrange the living room furniture and start lugging things and using your brain to make them fit. No caffeine late on. Dinner at a reasonably early time. I'm not one of nature's larks but at least I can fit everything I want to do into a day now!

ChilliCheese123 · 05/05/2020 10:39

I am a night owl and become productive at 8pm ish. My DP is morning person but also can stay up really late, he just doesn’t need much sleep. I can get up early if I need to, but with lockdown I’m finding it hard to get up when there’s no real reason. I try and get up to do joe wicks in the morning and eat a nice breakfast by 10am. Being ready for the day by 10.30am is good for me these days!

Batqueen · 05/05/2020 10:47

I am a night owl. Setting an alarm and having a time when I must be out of bed etc helps me function in the morning along with some gentle morning exercise such as a walk around the block (pre lockdown) or some stretches. Having a yoghurt as soon as I can manage to eat (not a breakfast person)

BUT, I’ve learned to save all my big meetings, intellectual tasks etc at work til after lunch (where possible). I’m doing a course and even on days off work I don’t start til after lunch. At the weekend, dp gets up and cleans the house while I chill out. And I clean whilst he is chilling in the evening. I’ve accepted that’s who I am.

AravisTarkheena · 05/05/2020 10:57

For me, getting up early during the week just means I don’t get enough sleep and have a late lie in on the weekend, every weekend. Which in turn makes it harder for me to go to bed early! Sometimes I can sleep before 11 but I’m usually at the point where I’m exhausted then.
I don’t actually find it hard getting up is I get up at about 8 12-8 is fine, 10. 30 - 6.30 is terrible.

grey12 · 05/05/2020 16:07

I used to be like you.

Then I started working quite early and having to leave the house suuuper early (6am? Roughly). Slowly I just started getting sleepy earlier and going to bed before 12 Shock

For me it was a slow process I must say, a few months to make a serious impact

Pinkblueberry · 05/05/2020 16:27

What time do you go to sleep? Some people need less than others, but if you need a lot the only thing to do really is go to bed earlier. You’ll never get up enthusiastically at 7 if you’ve gone to bed past midnight.

Pinkblueberry · 05/05/2020 16:30

To be honest - you don’t need to become a ‘morning person’. Why the two extremes, 7.00 is fairly early I think when you have nothing much planned for the day, but even on a lazy day 12 is pretty late. Why not start by waking up at 9 or 10?

SpnBaby1967 · 05/05/2020 17:16

I used to be a morning person, sort of. Always was able to be up and about ready for work with no issues. Then I had kids, now they really are larks! Even now at 11, 9 & 7 they are up by 6am at the latest, but old enough to at least do that on their own. But those first few years of super early starts killed me.

I still need to be up for work/school but I'm most productive in the afternoon. Always save the majority of work for post 1PM.

I'm shattered by 9PM but can rarely get to sleep before midnight/1am.

Weekends I tend to sleep till 8am-9am but struggle to get going all day especially in lockdown. Just doesn't feel worth it.

BarbedBloom · 05/05/2020 18:00

I am never going to be a morning person. I had to get up at 5.30am for work and just hated every second. If I go for a walk I prefer to walk in the dark. My mum jokes I would have made a good vampire as I also prefer the winter and the dark nights.

I am equally productive as my friends who are morning people, I just do things at different times to them. Luckily I married someone who is the same and we don't have children so can please ourselves most of the time.

beachbreeze · 05/05/2020 18:04

Some responses seem to indicate that most think that night owls get up late. In the modern working world, or those getting kids to school, lying in bed isn't an option. So the night owls generally go to bed late and get up early. This world isn't great for us night owls!

RedPanda2 · 06/05/2020 17:18

@beachbreeze so true!

RingPiece · 06/05/2020 17:28

I've tried for years out of necessity to become a morning lark. It doesn't work. Even if I've had enough sleep, I'm not alert until midday. Even if I've had little or no sleep, I'm wide awake as soon as the sun goes down.
