To buy a mattress without testing it?

Dollygirl2008 · 04/05/2020 07:34

I previously tested a Bella mattress from Carpetright but are now closed with no idea of opening.

I have to get a new mattress on the next couple of weeks due to moving house (long story) and whilst I'm doing research, it seems a lot of money to spend without actually testing them. Should I just chance it and buy one with a money back guarantee??

It depends, we ordered our last new mattress online but had tested some so knew we were looking for at least 3000 pocket springs or 9000 mini pocket springs, fairly firm, natural fibres rather than synthetic, wanted a deep mattress to suit the bed frame we wanted and I can't abide memory foam, so that narrowed it down a lot and it needed to be one you don't need to flip as our bed is a super king and that's no mean feat, then we looked at reviews. I love the mattress we have it's really comfortable. So if you know what you like it's not too much of a chance. I wouldn't just order blind a mattress in a box that's got more marketing hype than actual brand reputation and longevity

showmethegin · 04/05/2020 07:50

We bought an Emma mattress without testing it, they had a 40% offer at new year. Did our research on the mattress in box market and thought it would suit us best. LOVE IT. Best one we've ever had. It did have a 100 day returns policy though, wouldn't have risked it without that

Mumdiva99 · 04/05/2020 07:54

Bought my daughter one off Amazon. It's fabulous and was a great price. (Was cheap enough that if it hadn't been great we could have replaced it in a few years. We'd just moved house and wanted her sorted in her room asap.

(Not sure if links are allowed but it's this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B081NKR87P/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_FV7REb93H6DZ7?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 )

EmbarrassedUser · 04/05/2020 07:58

Don’t do it! Worse £600 we ever spent as the description was nothing like on the website. I guess we could have returned it but never quite got round to it so ended up spending another £1200 on a replacement which we tested extensively in store.

Minimamame · 04/05/2020 08:02

We also bought the Emma (only 2 weeks ago!) We’re both really happy with it and won’t be returning it. I’d definitely recommend it.

userxx · 04/05/2020 08:05

@DontStandSoCloseToMe What mattress did you buy? It sounds perfect for me.

TheFairyCaravan · 04/05/2020 08:08

We've got this one from Ikea. I can't recommend it enough. I've got severe problems with my back and pelvis and pain in most joints. I used to wake up as stiff as a board but I sleep so much better this.

Microzilla · 04/05/2020 08:08

I got an Emma in the Christmas sale. I wouldn’t have bought it without the 100 day return policy though. I quite like it and will be keeping it.

yma123 · 04/05/2020 08:09

I also bought the Emma mattress in the Christmas sales and absolutely love it!

ZaraW · 04/05/2020 08:22

I got one from IKEA without testing. I wanted a firm mattress and this one is great. It's one of their more expensive ones.

Fluffybutter · 04/05/2020 08:25

Glad to hear good things about the Emma mattress as we were looking at that or the Simba

Namechangex10000 · 04/05/2020 08:30

@DontStandSoCloseToMe I’d also be interested in what mattress you have, I’m currently waking up barely able to walk through pain in my hips which seems to be cause by my mattress

showmethegin · 04/05/2020 09:06

@Fluffybutter I read that if anyone sleeping on the mattress is a side sleeper, the Emma is best as it is ever so slightly softer than the simba and the eve. I sleep on my side and DP sleeps on back and we both love it. Just what I read, don't know how true it is!

lidoshuffle · 04/05/2020 09:35

I got a bargain in the John Lewis sale, but there were none in store, so I bought 'blind' as it was such a bargain reduced from £2500 to £1000.

Best grand I've ever spent. A decent quality mattress is a mattress, I don't think it's worth deliberating for ages. Just be sure it's the suitable firmness for your weights, and the type (pocket sprung, memory, latex etc) you want.

Fluffybutter · 04/05/2020 10:44

@showmethegin that’s really helpful ,thanks.
I am a side sleeper and dh is both!
I did think the sim a was a little firm so that’s good to know the Emma is less so

Dollygirl2008 · 04/05/2020 11:51

Reall interesting as I'd been looking at the Emma mattress, but some of the negative reviews put me off. Also, a couple of you have mentioned pain in your hips - that is one of the reasons I'm getting a new mattress - I wake up some mornings barely able to move because of the pain in my hips, pelvis and down my thighs. Dr couldn't find anything wrong, and the chiropractor just takes £50 off me each time to tell me how to stretch! I'm really hoping that this might help!

Thanks for insights - off to check the ones that have been recommended!!

I bought a mattress from M&S online without testing it, but I vaguely knew what u was looking for - it’s great. Bought a cheap mattress for my daughter’s bed online from a bed company, I think it’s pretty horrible, but she loves it 🤷🏾‍♀️

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 04/05/2020 22:53

@userxx @Namechangex10000
It was a couple of years ago but we got it fromThe natural bed company, we used the same criteria for the double in the spare room and got one from happy beds and that is pretty comfortable too, I decamped there with DS when he was tiny sometimes.

elenaf · 04/05/2020 23:53

I've never been fussy about mattresses, or had hip pain - until I tried the Emma. I found it to be very hard, and it gave me hip pain for the first time ever. I sent it back and got a pocket sprung mattress, and the pain went immediately.

RingaRosie · 05/05/2020 00:03

I would have to test out the mattress. Have mine almost 10 years now, very happy!
Different people like different mattresses. It’s quite personal. I like firm, but fair. Memory Foam is my worst nightmare...

snowybean · 05/05/2020 00:08

I had an Eve mattress and I LOVED it. I split up with my then-boyfriend and when I moved into my new place I tried an Emma mattress. Had it for seven months now and it's also great.

I think I prefer Eve, but then again I'm sleeping on the floor rather than a bedframe 😂

TippledPink · 05/05/2020 00:13

I bought a mattress from Groupon so didn't try it beforehand- it is the most comfortable mattress ever, we love our bed! I checked reviews.

Dollygirl2008 · 06/05/2020 16:24

I was just about to order an Emma, but I'm going to wait and hear how the lockdown will be affecting shops - if there's a chance that carpet right are opening, I should probably wait and get the Bella one that I've tested. I everywhere else seems to be bloomin opening so i wouldn't be surprised!

OP posts:
LesleysChestnutBob · 06/05/2020 16:29

I tried an Emma and found it gave me terrible back pain, apparently although they feel hard to sit on, by the time it's moulded to you it was too soft for me. I went to a mattress warehouse and tried some out. Couldn't keep buying and returning mattresses.

Dollygirl2008 · 06/05/2020 16:32

I was going to order the Emma but I've decided to wait and see if the announcement on Sunday relaxes lockdown. If so, and carpetright open, I'll order the Bella one that is previously tested.
