Why so many thread deletions on here?

I don't understand how a site for grown ups is so heavily regulated. Two threads I had earmarked to read later have both disappeared with the usual mumsnet message. I get some threads are bad (racism etc) and should be deleted, but it happens so often, I have to question, WHY? why not lock threads but allow them to stand?

I was really enjoying reading the thread about chinese products in our homes; something that I hadn't really thought about (and had no intention to stop buying 'made in china' products) but I had a little fun earlier looking at clothes/stuff at home to see the label and where they were made. I was on page 4 when I had earmarked to return later and the thread is now deleted. The thread was normal to that point. What could have been so bad?

I enjoy this site (and waste so much time on it) but I find it so childish with so many deletions. Haha this will probably be pulled as well!

Dear site owner/s - can you please look into locking threads rather than deleting them? I am sure some of them can stand.

It isn’t that difficult to work out - particularly with the thread you mention. Overtly goady racist threads are best binned as they just descend into mindless bunfights. There’s nothing to be gained from those.

But the stupid McDonald's ones can stay? There's no rhyme or reasons to the deletions imo.

I'm with you op. I'd rather make my own decisions about whether I'd like to read a thread or not.

Some threads are just so obviously made up, with others it becomes apparent bit later. But I agree that there is really a lot being deleted. I guess people are bored in lockdown and are making up tales or arguments for fun?
I agree about locking rather than deleting!

I agree with you and have said the same before. So many posters deciding perfectly normal threads they just don't agree with are "trolls" and reporting them with absolutely no evidence. If you don't believe somebody, why not just not reply? This happens all the time and it's not just on threads that are clearly made up, or the poster is known to be a troll.

You also get a lot of threads that become heated ending up deleted, and I always wonder why the OP should lose out on the help they may have been getting from the thread because the posters commenting on it turned it into a dog fight. It's different if the OP themselves ask for it to be taken down, but it's incredibly annoying taking the time to write a well thought out, helpful reply only to see the thread get taken down moments later because of other, ruder comments. Why can't only those comments be deleted? I always wonder what happened to the OP after that.

MN is a bit of an echo chamber filled with people that think the majority agrees with their outlook without question and everyone else is a freak, because any time anything actually sparks debate, it ends up deleted.
