Trolley Coin

AIBU to ask if any of you know if you can put a 1Euro coin in a trolley? I haven't a £1 coin and obviously lost my trolley coin that I was going to keep in the car so that I wouldn't lose it. Smile

Yep you can

cliffdiver · 03/05/2020 21:08

Yes, you can.

Knobblybobbly · 03/05/2020 21:09

You can also use a standard door key, the rounded end bit in most trolleys.

Pika09 · 03/05/2020 21:09

2x 20p coins also work

Fluffyslippers02 · 03/05/2020 21:10

Thanks all.

@knobblybobbly I've heard that, but knowing me, I would end up stabbing myself with the sticky out bit Grin

I keep a euro in my purse just for this, so I know I won’t spend it! I used to keep a pound in the front of the car as my trolley pound, but so many times I used it for parking money and forgot to replace it, that I had to find another solution.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/05/2020 21:12

When you get another trolley coin, use a keyring clip & attach to your purse zipper.

Fluffyslippers02 · 03/05/2020 21:13

AdoptAdaptImprove That's an idea....

Why do supermarkets make you "pay" £1 anyway???

OP posts:
AJPTaylor · 03/05/2020 21:21

To make sure you bring the trolley back..saves on staff

To make you return the trolley to the trolley park and not just abandon it in the car park and drive off.

Hingeandbracket · 03/05/2020 21:23

I use an old £1 too.

Hingeandbracket · 03/05/2020 21:24

Pre Corona, I got a "training course" from a helpful customer service person at Sainsbury's

Honeyroar · 03/05/2020 21:26

Knowing me I’d get my door key stuck in the trolley if I tried to use it!

Fluffyslippers02 · 03/05/2020 21:27

@Hingeandbracket In what? What you can use in a trolley? Please share Smile

The only store here that does the coins in the cart is Aldi. They have now put quarters in all the carts. I guess to stop people passing the quarters around?

Iwantacookie · 03/05/2020 21:33

I've got a token on my key ring because I never had a £1 coin.
I also keep a spare one in the car because I have a habit of chucking them in my pocket and forgetting about them.
Apparently the tokens you get from tesco/waitrose (that cashier gives you to pop in charity box) work but I havent tried it myself.

whatdoyoudonow · 03/05/2020 21:34

If you ever get stuck. Ask at the checkout/customer services. They lend old £1 coins or tokens out usually.

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 03/05/2020 21:36

The keys from corned beef tins work too. I need one on my keyring.

Ouchjuststoodonlego · 03/05/2020 21:37

Keep not need

Unravellingslowly · 03/05/2020 21:42

Why do supermarkets make you "pay" £1 anyway?

Because they cost £75 + each (that was years ago) and don’t want you wheeling them off because you don’t want to pay for a taxi.
There are even some supermarkets that have signs at the car park entrances saying “trolley wheels will lock if trolleys are taken beyond this point” & they have paid for this to happen because so many go missing as people know the key, double 29p trick.

TheGreatWave · 03/05/2020 21:49

Where I used to live people would still do that - a lost £ is still less than a taxi.

Fluffyslippers02 · 03/05/2020 21:50

@Unravellingslowly Surely the people that would do that would/will still do it using a £1 coin? Its still cheaper than a taxi? Also, if the wheels lock when leaving, then they can't take it, therefore, £1 isn't needed to keep the trolley at the store?

So students don't use them to move house in Grin

melj1213 · 03/05/2020 22:54

For my store it isnt about trolleys getting stolen - as they will be stolen regardless - it's about ensuring that the trolleys are returned to the trolley corral/front of the store instead of being abandoned all over our car park. It makes our porters jobs easier as they only have to collect a large number of trolleys from fixed places rather than have to collect them together from all over our site.

Additionally, there are only the locks on our smaller trolleys because the big trolleys rarely get abandoned in the car park, and if they do then they have a wheel lock and are heavy enough to not be blown all over the place. The smaller ones dont have a wheel lock and, as they are much lighter, are easily blown around the car park potentially causing damage/accidents.
