To apply for a new job?

A job has come up that I want to apply for, but (potentially) moving jobs at a time like this makes me nervous.

My current job is in marketing for a manufacturer. I'm bored of it, I dont like the culture, i dread sunday evenings. Plus side is the pay is quite good.

Loads of the other departments have been furloughed but we have a big project on that the board of directors still wants going ahead so my job is seemingly safe for the time being but if sales continue to decline I'm sure it wont be safe for long.

The new job is in the civil service and is not in marketing.

Do you think I'd be unreasonable to think about moving at this time? Would a civil service job be more stable do you think? I know it's hard to judge without knowing all the details.

The other thing is we want to have a family soon and my current role only offers SMP whereas the civil service obviously has a much more attractive maternity package.

YANBU - apply for the job
YABU - this is an unstable time to move, stick it out at your current job

Being bored at work is a killer for me.
I would say go for a job that you are likely to enjoy (and have a more security - as much as you can get nowadays, unless you are a nurse / doctor)
Have you considered a potential paycut though?

I’ve just started my new job and I’m doing training from home. Such a strange time to do it but weirdly this whole lockdown has made such a big leap seem less scary. Sort of put it into perspective. Go for it Star

Civil Service jobs - you either end up being put in post as soon as security checks clear or you end up languishing on a list somewhere for months and months. Apply and see what happens!

Go for it! Probably better to be in the public sector at the minute.

Thanks all, that's definitely given me more confidence.

I forgot to say in my OP that the new role would be better paid than my current one.

I probably wont even get it, I just needed the confidence to apply i think!

Id definitely apply, you will have time to see how things pan out in the next few weeks and you would want to know more about the job before accepting anyway.

@ClementineTangerine - better paid? Smile - then what not to like? go for it!
What is the worst that can happen?
What do you have to lose? Smile

Definitely apply 😊 a month or so ago I applied for a new role, and several Skype interviews later, I got the new job 👍👍👍

Apply ! I’m just about to advertise 9 Civil Service vacancies and I’m hoping more people will be looking for the security we offer after Covid 19

Yes that's true, I guess with the uncertainty of everything going on i wondered if I should just be grateful to have a job full stop even if I dont like it!
